“27 village development committee's (vdcs) out of the 30 vdcs in the red panda range in the panchthar-ilam-taplejung (pit) corridor. 54 local people have been trained as fgs and are performing monthly monitoring in community forests. Two two-day refresher trainings were organized for 35 fgs covering red panda monitoring techniques. A total of 70 local forest users including fgs and community forest user group (cfug) members were sensitized to the importance of red pandas to himalayan ecosystems, threats to conservation, and legal provisions pertaining to red pandas. A red panda conservation and ecotourism promotion committee that we formed in ilam became registered as an independent non-profit. This will open the committee up to new opportunities for support and partnerships. Provisions focused on red panda conservation were incorporated into the operational plans of 4 cfugs in the ilam district. This will help institutionalize red panda conservation initiatives in the communities of this area. The 5th international red panda day was commemorated in 5 locations where more than 250 locals attended including cfug members, local political leaders, conservation agencies, and students. Essay and poem contests were also organized amongst the participants on the slogan of the 5th irpd "conserving locally, educating globally". Altogether 26 episodes of red panda conservation program produced and aired through a local fm radio in the eastern nepal which helped at least 50,000 local people sensitized on red panda conservation issues. Two nurseries of paris polyphylla, highly valued medicinal plant, established which will financially support at least 100 local households as well as two nurseries of plant species that will help improve red panda habitat quality.”
