Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 4: Description of Significant Changes to Organizational Documents

The bylaws were amended in order to remove the term of the Organization's founding members as ex officio directors with the privilege to serve in perpetuity. The amended bylaws also increased the term of elected officers from one year to two years and officers other than the Treasurer may serve no more than two consecutive terms in a given position. Two new officer roles were also added. Vice-President for Development was added to assist the Director of Development in overseeing Path with Art's fundraising efforts and shall chair the Resource Development Committee. The Immediate Past President was added to support the President and the Executive Director on an as-needed basis for a term of one year.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The Board Treasurer will review the draft of the 990-public disclosure copy with the Finance Committee and Executive Director to ensure accurateness. Once the Finance Committee has signed off on the 990-public disclosure copy it will be provided to the full Board for review prior to filing. The Board Chair will review the complete 990 prior to filing.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Community Connections: Path with Art conducts arts engagement opportunities that bring participants and the community together through art-making activities and reflection, such as We Are All Here, an interactive and community - wide poetry and painting project that brought disparate communities together to discuss what it means to all be together in a rapidly changing city of Seattle. Our community connections projects also included a visual arts exhibition curated for the Anne Focke Gallery at Seattle City Hall. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Arts Leadership: Path With Art is considered a model organization for metropolitan, national, and global efforts to utilize the arts as a change agent for individuals living in homelessness and crisis and as a powerful instrument to connect people to each other. We are being contacted by organizations in Seattle, Boston, LA, England and Japan to better understand the success of our program and how access to the arts can positively impact their own communities. To better share our experience, in 2016 we began developing an arts training program to guide cultural organizations in their own efforts to better serve vulnerable communities.

IRS990/Desc0Access Art: Path with Art collaborates with area arts institutions to bring participants to professional performances and exhibitions. Access Art provides some of the most marginalized individuals with a means to participate in Seattles cultural life, providing an important sense of civic belonging. We scheduled 32 Access Art events in 2016. These were guided trips to exhibitions andperformances at acclaimed art and cultural venues throughout Seattle all provided at no cost to our participants. We connect with over 25 arts partners to create opportunities for our participants to experience first-hand and sometimes for the first time the opera, live theatre, ballet, art exhibitions, and heritage museums among many others.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Arts Education: Path with Art classes provide hands-on, dynamic, and skill-building arts education led by award-winning professional teaching artists in a safe and caring community environment. In 2016, we served nearly 500 unique participants by providing more than 30 eight-week studio art classes, plus 9 intensive workshops, taught by over 24 acclaimed professional teaching artists in a wide variety of disciplines. Examples of these disciplines include acrylic, watercolor, ceramics, bookmaking, poetry, theatre, choir, and musical composition. Classes and workshops are held at locations across the city of Seattle to expand the accessibility for our participants and are made available to our 30 social service partners.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Exhibits and Showcases: Students who have completed a Path with Art class are invited and encouraged to participate in a Path with Art sponsored exhibit or performance showcase honoring their achievements. In 2016, we produced 12 exhibitions, showcases, and performances. These were anchored by quarterly art exhibitions at our new, permanent gallery in Pioneer Square and our bi-annual performing arts showcases. In addition, we produced a poetry competition and reading and a summer public art installation in Occidental Park. Our choir, the Path with Art Singers, had six public performances at venues throughout the city. These performance and exhibition are some of our most powerful events: they connect the Path with Art community with the broader community in addition to giving a stronger voice to an often voiceless constituency.
