Linking ifi-watchers and gender justice groups - gender action's 2008-2010 'ifi-watcher gender capacity building project' provides training and technical assistance to ifi-watcher partners to ensure they routinely consider gender dimensions in their work. In the project's last year, we found that thanks to our technical support, partners are increasingly integrating gender dimensions into their work, including both internal organizational processes and external outputs, showing remarkable progress among partners in applying gender lenses in their work compared to our 2008 baseline audits. Gender action also constantly responds to a stream of "engendering" requests for help from other ifi watcher groups and will continue to do so. In 2010, we helped actionaid, the women won't wait campaign, and bread for the world "engender" their publications.

Activity 3

Gender and climate change - responding to the ifis' simultaneously stepping up investments in environmentally-controversial infrastructure projects, such as fossil-fuel generating extractive industries, and managing climate investment funds (cifs) to help poor countries adapt and mitigate to climate change effects caused by rich countries, gender action monitored ifi climate change initiatives closely throughout 2010. In particular, gender action examined the climate investment funds (cifs) of the world bank and their inclusion of gender. As fund disbursement has stagnated across the cifs, gender action focused its efforts on increasing civil society advocacy on gender and climate change. Gender action also regularly participates in coalition meetings, where ifi investments in climate change and extractive industries are discussed and where we raise gender concerns regularly. We also launched a project with friends of the earth international (foei) affiliates in ghana, togo, cameroon and nigeria to expose harmful gender impacts of the chad-cameroon and west african gas and oil pipelines and improve the social, especially women's rights, impacts around these pipeline sites.
