Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the forbes funds is to strengthen the management and policy-making capacity of the nonprofit sector by providing the support, resources, and knowledge required for high-performing nonprofits. This mission is accomplished through grantmaking, applied research and sector leadership activities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Applied research: as a result of the 2009 evaluation of the tropman fund, the forbes funds has redesigned its tropman framework. The new framework consists of community "soundings" which are short surveys that get the pulse of the sector. We aspire to publish four studies in the next 12 months, the first will examine wage and compensations within the nonprofit sector. We have contracted with the urban institute to conduct a poverty study that will complete the following: 1) a synopsis of how poverty is being measured and how it should be measured; 2) data analysis of poverty trend in the metro region; 3) survey to determine the demand on nonprofits; and 4) an analysis of successful programs to determine trends and recommendations. We will also host a 2010 research conference that will highlight the results of our research and tap into additional studies that are being developed throughout the region. Finally, we seek to develop a forbes funds case study "product" and have convened a team to help us create the model.
Activity 3
Sector leadership: through our grantmaking, the forbes funds has identified three themes of paramount importance to the sector: strategic alliances, financial literacy, and outcomes measures. As a result, we have engaged in a two-pronged approach of convening followed by grantmaking to further advance these areas. We host sessions in the areas of strategic restructuring and financial analysis. We also convene the consulting community in an effort to convey best practices and trends that can improve their deliverables to agencies. We have contracted lapiana and associates to condut a strategic restructuring training for 25 consultants over the next nine months. Finally, the forbes funds continues to host the greater pittsburgh nonprofit partnership, a coalition of approximately 350 nonprofits committed to creating a unified voice for the sector.the alfred w. Wishart, jr. Award for excellence in nonprofit management is named in honor of "burr" wishart. Mr. Wishart served the pittsburgh foundation as its president for 31 years, and was chairman of the forbes funds at its inception. Presented by the forbes funds in cooperation with the pittsburgh post-gazette charities, the wishart award is made to a local nonprofit human service or community development organization that has demonstrated a sustained commitment to excellence in management and governance. Each year, the award-winning organization is publicly honored for its achievements and receives a $10,000 cash grant to be used for management support purposes. The award-winning organization must show a commitment to outstanding management in the following areas: demonstrated leadership among the staff and board of directors; use of information and objective analysis in planning and programming; commitment to excellence in human resource management; continuous improvement of service delivery processes; measurement and monitoring of outcomes; commitment to consumer satisfaction; openness to collaborative efforts with other organizations; and accountability to the public trust. Award recipients stand as models for the entire community. About the shapira medal:in 2003, the forbes funds inaugurated the frieda shapira medal, honoring a lifetime community reformer who, as a social worker for the children's service bureau, taught neglected and dependent children, and who, as a trustee, served numerous organizations, including the pittsburgh foundation, the united way of allegheny county, the united jewish federation of greater pittsburgh, and the forbes funds. Frieda shapira was recognized by pittsburgh magazine as one of the 100 most influential pittsburghers of the 20th century. The frieda shapira medal is presented to a local nonprofit executive for exemplary leadership and is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated: (1) distinctive and exceptional leadership for one's organization; (2) accomplishments that advanced the field; and (3) commitment to service beyond one's own organization. Our medal recipients stand as exemplars for all people across the pittsburgh region. Presented by the forbes funds in cooperation with the jewish healthcare foundation, the frieda shapira medal includes a $5000 cash prize.

IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIV/Explanation0THE FUND'S ENDOWMENT CONSISTS OF VARIOUS INVESTMENT FUNDS ESTABLISHED FOR A VARIETY OF PURPOSES. ITS ENDOWMENT INCLUDES DONOR-RESTRICTED ENDOWMENT FUNDS, AND FUNDS DESIGNATED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO FUNCTION AS ENDOWMENTS. AS REQUIRED BY GENERALLY ACCEPTED ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES, NET ASSETS ASSOCIATED WITH ENDOWMENT FUNDS, INCLUDING FUNDS DESIGNATED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO FUNCTION AS ENDOWMENTS, ARE CLASSIFIED AND REPORTED BASED ON THE EXISTENCE OR ABSENCE OF DONOR-IMPOSED RESTRICTIONS.
IRS990ScheduleD/Form990ScheduleDPartXIV/Explanation1THE FUND ADOPTED FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING STANDARDS BOARD (FASB) GUIDANCE FOR ACCOUNTING FOR UNCERTAINTY IN INCOME TAXES WHICH PROVIDES CRITERIA FOR THE RECOGNITION AND MEASUREMENT OF UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS. THIS GUIDANCE REQUIRES THAT AN UNCERTAIN TAX POSITION SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED ONLY IF IT IS MORE LIKELY THAN NOT THAT THE POSITION IS SUSTAINABLE BASED ON ITS TECHNICAL MERITS. RECOGNIZABLE TAX POSITIONS SHOULD THEN BE MEASURED TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT OF BENEFIT RECOGNIZED IN THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. THE FUND FILES U.S. FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL INFORMATION RETURNS, AND NO RETURNS ARE CURRENTLY UNDER EXAMINATION. THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS ON THE FUND'S U.S. FEDERAL TAX RETURNS REMAINS OPEN FOR THE PERIODS ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2008 THROUGH THE PRESENT. THE FUND CONTINUES TO EVALUATE ITS TAX POSITION PURSUANT TO THE PRINCIPLES OF FASB GUIDANCE AND HAS DETERMINED THAT THERE IS NO MATERIAL IMPACT ON THE FUND'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
