Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: The Credit Card Tying Cy Pres Project: This project has produced "Questions and Answers About Secured Credit Cards", a training manual and group leader's guide designed to give community advocates and outreach workers a background on the topic so that they can counsel clients and/or lead workshops for other staff members. It is intended to be used with the brochure titled "Building and Repairing Your Credit with a Secured Credit Card," an easy-to-read introduction to the subject available in Chinese, English and Spanish. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: The Financial Literacy Project: Consumer Action's Financial Literacy Project has produced many fact sheets to help people be aware of their financial rights and options. These fact sheets cover opening a bank account, shopping for savings instruments and resolving complaints against financial institutions. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: The Housing Education Project: The Housing Education Project works to help people become aware of their rights as tenants. It has worked with the federal housing department to make people aware of how to assert their rights when they are victims of housing discrimination. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: The Annual Best Practices Consumer Conference: Every fall Consumer Action holds a Best Practices 2-day consumer advocacy and education conference in Chicago, bringing together consumer advocates and educators from around the country. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: Chase Financial Technology Grant: The purpose of the grant was to scale the work we have been doing with financial technology and education, with proven success for underbanked, diverse and LMI consumers to achieve the following intended outcomes: 1) introduce financial health and financial technology to a total of 250 LMI, underbanked and diverse adult consumers and five - ten CBO staff at five sites across the nation to build financial capability and resilience; 2) use the CFSI Financial Health Score Toolkit to diagnose financial health and track changes in financial health for 95 of the 250 consumers and five CBO staff (based on previous adoption rates); and 3) translate the FinTech fact sheet into four languages and distribute electronic and printed, bulk copies to 100 CBOs for the direct benefit of 10,000 consumers. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: Wells Fargo Financial Technology Grant: Consumer Action will use a human-centered design and evidence-based approach. Consumer Action's partner community-based organizations (CBOs) will measure and report financial capability metrics using the CFSI Financial Health Score Toolkit Survey. The eight-question survey measures financial capability in the areas of saving, spending, borrowing and planning. The CFSI Financial Health Score is designed to help financial service providers, employers, and other organizations diagnose and track the financial health of their consumers and workforce. The framework provides a holistic, moment-in- time snapshot of a consumer's financial health. The qualitative survey data is self-reported by consumers and compared against national benchmarks. The information is also used to diagnose financial health and select financial technology tools that meet specific financial health needs self-identified by consumers. CBOs will introduce clients to financial technology tools at group trainings, counseling coaching appointments and through digital or print campaigns. At least one staff person at each test site will use the financial technology tools along with the consumers. Counselors will familiarize themselves with tools and provide clients with instructions, technical assistance and referrals to outside resources. CBOs will measure financial health of the consumers via electronic surveys at program entry, 3- month and 6-month intervals. CBOs will demonstrate outcomes using the CFSI Financial Health Score Toolkit and consumer achievement in these areas: acquired a financial asset, improved d

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The IB Insurance Cy Pres Project: Under this grant Consumer Action conducted research about consumer insurance issues, and took positions on insurance-related regulatory and legislative proposals. The project has produced a 10-page pamphlet on "Auto Insurance, The Basics", including the coverage you need, what determines how much you'll pay for auto insurance, and how to file a claim. Consumer Action also provided information on California's low-cost auto insurance program, and used its expertise in the insurance field to provide free counseling to consumers who called with insurance-related questions.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/ExpenseAmt0351585
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Other Projects: In addition to the projects mentioned above, Consumer Action produced a quarterly newsletter on consumer affairs, CA News, which the organization has been printing since 1971. The organization also conducts advocacy by researching current marketplace issues and contacting legislators and regulators about the pro-consumer position on these developments. Within the last year Consumer Action also conducted educational projects concerning: internet privacy and security, consumer education for veterans, medical privacy issues, and education about contact lens awareness.
