Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Enterprise for High School Students introduces the world of work to San Francisco high school students (freshmen through seniors) through job readiness training, college and career exploration and experiential learning opportunities. Once a student completes one of the two job readiness programs (Pathways or This Way Ahead), they are eligible to utilize all our programs and services until they graduate from high school. Enterprise 445 active members during the 1/1/14-12/31/14 time period.

Major Activities

Activity 2
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:Pathways Program: Job-readiness and vocational skills training. Our workshops use interactive and age appropriate curriculum, material and activities to prepare students for the world of work. Youth complete 8 hours of job readiness training including: self identification of hard and soft skills; completion of a sample job application, a resume, cover letter, thank you letter; appropriate references; positive first impressions; phone and in-person interview skills; child labor laws; and awareness of work place etiquette and expectations. Youth also attend a minimum of 4 hours of vocational skills-based workshops which correspond with many of the unsubsidized job postings listed in our job bank. The purpose of these workshops is to give participants a foundation for job specific skills in order to increase their employability and better prepare them for the identified fields. Workshops include childcare, office, computer applications, event assistance and customer service. 236 youth were served in this program from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012.This Way Ahead: This Way Ahead is a collaborative project between EHSS and Gap Inc offering underserved youth a 14-week job readiness training program beginning in January. Students attend 2 workshops per week, earn a stipend of $50 every two weeks and receive a monthly Muni Pass. 55 students completed the 4 month job readiness training. 50% of the students who graduate from the training are offered a paid 4 month internship in a Gap or Old Navy store. From June through October, 26 students received the Old Navy and Gap internships. Students who did not receive an internship at Gap or Old Navy were encouraged to apply for the EHSS summer programs and to utilize the EHSS Job Bank. Job Bank: This employment opportunity program connects San Francisco high school students with a wide variety of local employers hiring youth. Only youth who complete the Pathways or This Way Ahead Program may access the job listings. Enterprise had 648 weekend, after-school and summer jobs open from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012. Jobs include but are not limited to child care, community programs, office assistance, retail sales, gardening and event assistance. Students seeking employment opportunities utilized the job bank 2721 times between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012.College and Career Counseling: Each participant in the Pathways Program attends workshops and meetings with the College and Career Counselor. All youth attend a 2-hour workshop where they engage in self-exploration and discovery, educational and occupational exploration and career planning and decision making. Half-day job shadow programs are also available for youth to further explore their career options. Youth create an attainable short and long term Education Action Plan. Their educational progress and steps towards goals are monitored throughout the Pathway program. Additional post-secondary education workshops include: 2-hour Go2College workshop, which helps focus youth on how to select the higher educational option best for their needs and planning for financial aid; 2-hour Financial Literacy workshop where participants learn the basics of budgeting, saving, financial aid and building credit; and full-day Personal Statement and SAT Preparation workshop.

IRS990/Description0SUMMER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS:Career Exploration Program (CEP): An award winning 7 week summer internship program for 48 students designed to allow youth the opportunity to experience a field of interest to them. By matching youth to an expressed area of interest, they gain real-life experience and learn what the actual job entails and what it takes to work towards that job while earning a stipend of $750 for a part time internship and $1500 for a full time internship. By interning in a work environment, youth gain access to a multitude of career choices that work in conjunction with their matched internship supervisor, exposing students to a broader band of jobs within their desired field. CEP offers a support system through site supervisors who structure the work experience and offer on-site direction and advisors who are EHSS recruited and trained volunteers who check in with the youth and help them process their experience.CEP also involves program activities and exercises designed to supplement the interns experience. They include a workshop series designed to build on aspects of job readiness/workplace expectations; weekly journal assignments which aid in youth reflections; a final project which highlights aspects of the interns experience and gained knowledge; and a graduation event to celebrate the internship experience.CEP is proud to work with corporate sponsors who include Merrill Lynch, Chevron Energy Solutions, PG&E and Kaiser Permanente. Additional internship sites include but not limited to: medical and dental practices, architectural and engineering firms, interior and graphic design businesses, investment firms, law firms, government departments and supervisors offices, and social service providers. Summer Gardening Program: Enterprise for High School Students Summer Gardening Program provides summer employment and job training to 16 high school students in three of San Franciscos city parks. Students worked in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Botanical Garden in Golden Gate Park and Buena Vista Park for seven weeks, from 9:00 1:00 and were paid the hourly minimum wage.At each park site, students work in teams of eight and are supervised by a Team Leader. Projects include park maintenance, landscaping, soil conservation, erosion control, pruning, weeding, urban forestry and trail repair. Students gain horticultural skills as well as communication skills and the ability to work well in a team. They learn the importance of punctuality, having a positive attitude, and hard work. They also further their ability to problem solve and to follow instructions. The program incorporates many youth development activities and games, which provide a safe environment for the youth to develop positive relationships with co-workers and to assist in their own self-discovery. This program gives youth the opportunity to make a positive and visible contribution to their local environment and community by virtue of their work. The Junior Caddie Program: A collaboration between Enterprise for High School Students and The Olympic Club. An innovative training and employment opportunity for San Francisco high school students, the Junior Caddie Program is the only program of its kind in the area. Through learning the game of golf and the responsibilities of a caddy, 13 high school students gain an introduction to the working world and the expectations of a typical work place in a non-traditional environment. This unique experience encourages youth to not only follow directions and participate as directed, but to also creatively contribute to decisions and planning of the game strategy, building leadership skills and self-confidence while learning golf etiquette, sportsmanship and the importance of service.
