Ecological Restoration and Water Quality: Three stormwater basins were weeded and replanted with native plants by 40 volunteers in partnership with the City of Newark and United Water Delaware. The basins were also over seeded with a custom-made native wildflower mix. Volunteers came from Bank of America, DuPont, and several University of Delaware Student Groups, as well as community volunteers. Two grass swales in Swift Park, Hockessin, DE (approximately 5,000 square feet) were weeded twice and replanted with 400 native plant landscape plugs paid for by New Castle County as part of their ongoing maintenance requirements. 5000 landscape plugs were installed in two rain basins in London Grove Township with the help of 70 community volunteers. A summer intern was trained to conduct bacteria water sampling in the Pennsylvania sections of the White Clay Creek. This intern sampled 10 sites during the months of July and August for fecal coliform and E. coli. Our partner, PA Department of Environmental Protection supplied the sampling containers and paid for all fecal coliform analysis. The intern received a performance-based award upon completion of the data collection. Freshwater mussel surveys were conducted by researches at the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE). None were found in the White Clay during these surveys so 200 fresh water mussels from the neighboring Brandywine Creek were tagged and transplanted into various locations in the Delaware portion of the White Clay to be monitored for survival over the next year as part of PDEs ongoing research and freshwater mussel restoration program.$0$13,296
Community Outreach: Public Events Fostering Watershed Stewardship: Planned, promoted and offered Creek Fest in May 2014 with Delaware State Parks to increase community awareness of the valuable natural and historic resources of the White Clay Creek Valley. Partnered with United Water Delaware to design and produce 400 water bottles to promote sustainable resources. Over 1300 people attended. Presented a lecture and one hands on workshop entitled 'vegetated solutions to storm water management'. One presentation and hands on workshop was provided at London Grove Township Building to municipal workers, landscape contractors, and developers with a hands on component at their recently planted rain basins. Another hands on workshop was provide to New Castle County employees at their vegetated swales in Swift Park, Hockessin, Delaware. Finally, a formal presentation was given to homeowners at Bayard Taylor Library in Kennett Square to introduce watershed friendly landscaping practices. Presented to 80 concerned citizens at a public meeting in New Garden Township regarding plans to put a new well into production. The meeting was held to inform nearby homeowners of what to expect both during and after the pumping test, as well as our role in the application process. Planned and presented on two White Clay Creek restoration projects, the Swift Park swales and the Newark stormwater retrofits to 42 attendees on the Christina Basin Bus Tour. Led 5 Volunteer Outreach Events in the watershed reaching approximately 200 people. Helped to lead and form the Christina Basin Education Group, a gathering of local environmental non-profits and government entities in the Christina Basin to determine the best path forward in communicating our message without duplicating efforts. Founding member and contributor to the New Garden Township e-newsletter. Tasked with providing articles and information about water quality and watershed projects.$0$11,113
Open Space Preservation Program: Watershed Conservation: Our Open Space Preservation program consists of landowner contacts, review and analysis of grant sources for fee simple purchase or conservation easement, investigation of entities to hold fee simple titles or conservation easements, and grant applications for open space preservation within the watershed. Approximately 11 acres in London Britain Township adjacent to the White Clay Creek Preserve were placed under easement in January 2014. This property will be permanently protected, enlarging a buffer to the White Clay Creek Preserve and protecting a tributary to the East Branch of the White Clay Creek. Started planning efforts for a riparian gap analysis of the White Clay Watershed with our partners Brandywine Conservancy, Natural Lands Trust, and Chester County Planning Commission. In addition a grant was made to the landowners to help with expenses they incurred in accepting this easement.$6,000$4,814
Trail Development: Grants were made to the Friends of the White Clay Preserve to help with development of the Tri-State Marker trail and to Franklin Township to help pay for trail bridges in the Banffshire Preserve.$4,300$0
School Projects: Two schools were awarded educational programing and transportation funding for field studies at Stroud. Fourteen students from Maclary Elementary (Newark, DE) and 52 students from Holy Angels (Newark, DE) attended a 4.5-hour stream study on the White Clay Creek. Partnered with University of Delaware professor Luc Claessens, to provide approximately 54 college undergraduates enrolled in a introductory level geography course (GEO 235) with hands on experience in natural resource management within the watershed during the month of Sept as part of class credit. Four separate outing were planned for the students during the Fall 2014.$0$1,420
Watershed Signage: Designed 24" x 36" interpretive panel for the new Curtis Mill Park with our partner City of Newark to inform residents about the Wild and Scenic Program and how their actions affect water quality.$0$1,000
Lamborn House Renovation: The 1816 house in the New Garden Park which we call the Lamborn House has undergone a great deal of "cosmetic" work this past year. (The previous Fall, new windows had been installed and the chimney repaired.) Beginning in March, members of the Friends of the Lamborn House undertook to make the once derelict house livable. The first task was to remove all the furniture and trash left by previous occupants; this constituted several pickup truck loads. Then began the task of preparing the interior of the house for painting. The living room was replastered, patch plastering was accomplished in other rooms, broken tile was replaced in the bathroom, a door was hung in one bedroom, carpentry repairs were made and then the painting began. The new windows needed to be primed, old paint needed to be sanded or sealed, previously painted-shut sunporch windows needed to be freed and then the task of painting began. Meanwhile, a plumber replaced spigots and an electrician checked wiring and installed new lighting fixtures. At last with the end in sight, smoke detectors were installed. Scrubbing the wonderful old floors and scraping paint splatters is the final task. The Friends of the Lamborn House was lucky to receive the gift of a second hand iron railing for the deck. When this is installed, the house should be ready for a tenant. To renovate this old house, the Friends of the Lamborn House members spent 10 months, providing in excess of 600 hours of volunteer labor.$0$313

IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt0Open Space Preservation Program: Watershed Conservation: Our Open Space Preservation program consists of landowner contacts, review and analysis of grant sources for fee simple purchase or conservation easement, investigation of entities to hold fee simple titles or conservation easements, and grant applications for open space preservation within the watershed. In addition a grant was made to the landowners to help with expenses they incurred in accepting this easement.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt1Community Outreach: Public Events Fostering Watershed Stewardship: Planned, promoted and offered Creek Fest in May 2014 with Delaware State Parks to increase community awareness of the valuable natural and historic resources of the White Clay Creek Valley. Tasked with providing articles and information about water quality and watershed projects.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt2Ecological Restoration and Water Quality: Three stormwater basins were weeded and replanted with native plants by 40 volunteers in partnership with the City of Newark and United Water Delaware. None were found in the White Clay during these surveys so 200 fresh water mussels from the neighboring Brandywine Creek were tagged and transplanted into various locations in the Delaware portion of the White Clay to be monitored for survival over the next year as part of PDEs ongoing research and freshwater mussel restoration program.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt3School Projects: Two schools were awarded educational programing and transportation funding for field studies at Stroud. Four separate outing were planned for the students during the Fall 2014.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt4Watershed Signage: Designed 24" x 36" interpretive panel for the new Curtis Mill Park with our partner City of Newark to inform residents about the Wild and Scenic Program and how their actions affect water quality.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt5Lamborn House Renovation: The 1816 house in the New Garden Park which we call the Lamborn House has undergone a great deal of "cosmetic" work this past year. To renovate this old house, the Friends of the Lamborn House members spent 10 months, providing in excess of 600 hours of volunteer labor.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt6Trail Development: Grants were made to the Friends of the White Clay Preserve to help with development of the Tri-State Marker trail and to Franklin Township to help pay for trail bridges in the Banffshire Preserve.
