IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0Open Space Preservation Program: Watershed Conservation: Our Open Space Preservation program consists of landowner contacts, review and analysis of grant sources for fee simple purchase or conservation easement, investigation of entities to hold fee simple titles or conservation easements, and grant applications for open space preservation within the watershed. Approximately 120 acres in London Grove Township along the Middle Branch of the White Clay Creek were placed under easement in February 2013. New Garden Township purchased a 2 acre property along the East Branch with our assistance, to make way for a new trailhead along the proposed multi-municipal White Clay Creek Trail Loop. Additional work began on easing 34 acres that include 3,000 linear feet of the Middle Branch of the White Clay Creek in London Grove Township.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom1White Clay Reforestation Plan: Two sites along the East Branch in Pennsylvania were planted in November 2012. Volunteers planted a total of 1150 trees. Pledged funding to restore an additional acre of riparian land on the Speakman Farm in West Grove Pennsylvania with 250 trees planted by volunteers. Additionally, our summer intern visited three recently reforested sites in the White Clay to monitor planting success and conduct a visual survey of each site. Reports were developed for each site to be used for future planning and maintenance of reforested sites.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom2Community Events and Education: Public Events Fostering Watershed Stewardship: Planned, promoted and offered Creek Fest in May 2013 with Delaware State Parks to increase community awareness of the valuable natural and historic resources of the White Clay Creek Valley. Partnered with United Water Delaware to design and produce 150 water bottles to promote sustainable resources. Over 1000 people attended. A Best Management Practice (BMP) Municipal Workshop was held at the William J. Conner Building, and two hands on BMP maintenance workshops at the newly installed vegetated swales in Swift Park, Hockessin, Delaware were offered to New Castle County employees. Two public informational meetings regarding the stormwater basin retrofits at the Hunt of Louviers in Newark, Delaware were held to educate nearby homeowners of what to expect both during and after construction, as well as why the basins needed retrofitting and how the retrofits would benefit water quality. Two summer stream adoption hikes were held for the general public. One in Goddard Park, West Grove, Pennsylvania the other in Middle Run Natural Area in Newark, Delaware. Participants learned about stormwater BMPs and conducted macro-invertebrate studies in the creek. Developed a watershed passport program for the White Clay Creek to get children and families out learning and exploring the White Clay Creek. Passports were designed and 1000 were printed for distribution at educational events. Passport stamps were also purchased. Passports were given out at such at Creek Fest, Community Day, and at our educational hikes. Additionally, the White Clay Creek State Park is planning to offer a 'White Clay Passport' education program this spring and will distribute and use our passports as the basis of the program. Exhibited at the Bank of America Environmental Expo in May 2013, and at Newark Community Day in September 2013. 20,000+ persons attend Newark Community Day in downtown Newark, Delaware. Provided a public lecture and tour at Margot Taylor's residence, the only certified residential SITES property on the East Coast to 20 individuals. Supported Delaware Nature Society in planning a community habitat garden in an effort to certify the City of Newark a National Wildlife Federation Community Habitat. Upgraded our website and social media presence with the help of a University of Delaware graduate student, with technical assistance provided by an employee of the UD Water Resources Agency.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom3Ecological Restoration and Research on Water Quality: Three stormwater basins were regraded and replanted with native plans over two days by 100 volunteers in partnership with the City of Newark. Volunteers came from Bank of America, DuPont, and several University of Delaware Student Groups, as well as community volunteers. Two grass swales in Swift Park, Hockessin, DE (approximately 5,000 square feet) were regraded and planted with 4,650 native plant landscape plugs by New Castle County municipal employees. DNREC 319 Funds provided funding for the plants used in the swales. Three Newark, Delaware residents were reimbursed up to $200 each for installing rain gardens on their properties. Two invasive plant removals in the White Clay Creek Preserve were conducted with volunteers in April and again in June of 2013. A summer intern was trained to conduct bacteria water sampling in the Pennsylvania sections of the White Clay Creek. This intern sampled 10 sites during the months of July and August for fecal coliform and E. coli. Freshwater mussel surveys were conducted by researches at the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE). None were found in the White Clay during these surveys so 200 fresh water mussels from the neighboring Brandywine Creek were tagged and transplanted into various locations in the Delaware portion of the White Clay to be monitored for survival over the next year as part of PDEs ongoing research and freshwater mussel restoration program.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom4White Clay Dam Removal and Shad Restoration: Dam 1 Historical Study: Exploration of historical significance of Dam 1. The dam will be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Only the middle section of the dam will be removed and efforts will be made to preserve part of the original wood structure for display. Originally scheduled for removal in Spring 2012, but postponed because additional studies were required due to its historical significance. It will be the first dam removal in Delaware, and is now slated for Winter 2014. Funding was also received via an American Rivers Grant for planning and removal of dams two and three.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom5School Projects: The Shad in Schools Program continued at Maclary and Holy Angels Elementary Schools. Eighty children learned watershed principles and the ecological importance of shad in the White Clay Watershed though raising shad eggs in school and releasing the fry in the creek. White Clay Wild and Scenic funding supported water quality test kits. Two schools were awarded scholarships for field trips to Stroud Water Research Center. Forty-four students from Holy Angels (DE), and twenty-seven students from Assumption BVM (PA) were each awarded a 4.5 hour stream study to learn the importance of macro-invertebrates to watershed health. Bussing was included for students of Holy Angels.
