Archbold expeditions - macarthur agro-ecology research center (maerc) maerc is dedicated to long-term research, education and outreach on the relationships between sub-tropical grazing systems and the native ecological systems of the northern everglades. Maerc is located at buck island ranch, a full-scale 10,500-acre working cattle ranch on a long-term lease from the john d. And catherine t. Macarthur foundation. Maerc provides researchers the opportunity to evaluate the relationships among ecological, physical and economic factors, and how these change over time. Over one hundred scientific books and articles have been published based on this research, including several master's and doctoral theses. Maerc provides education programs via undergraduate and graduate training, 6 - 8 grade school curriculum development, agency and industry workshops, and public education.

Activity 3

Archbold expeditions - archbold reserve archbold expeditions has established the archbold reserve on a 3,648 acre site adjacent to archbold biological station. It is a degraded former cattle ranch that is the focus of new research and conservation program in restoration ecology, research staff and visiting scientists study ecological patterns and processes with an emphasis on the restoration and processes of the scrub, seepage slopes and cutthroat flatwoods communities of the site. Several studies are underway with emphasis to date on population biology, community ecology, nutrient cycling, hydrology, and agro-ecology. These studies will guide habitat management, habitat restoration and protection by public agencies and private landowners. Land management for conservation on the archbold reserve includes prescribed burning, grazing and removal of exotic invasive plants. We are working with the usda and state agencies to conduct large scale hydrological and vegetation restoration over portions of the site. The archbold reserve provides researchers with the opportunity to evaluate the relationships among ecological and physical factors under restoration conditions. Education programs to date include master's and doctoral student training and agency workshops and tours.
