Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization's finance committee is responsible for the oversight of the audit of the financial statements and the selection of the independent auditors. This process is not changed from prior year.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 8:

Melmark recognized a prior period adjustment in 2013 for their rights to assets held by melmark charitable foundation. Under gaap, transfers from donors to a foundation that raises, holds, or invests for a named beneficiary, should be recorded as a receivable and an increase in net assets of the beneficiary in the period received. For 2013, melmark did not recognize its rights in the net assets of the foundation, resulting in an understatement of beneficial interest in assets held by affiliate of $3,538,460 in the statements of financial position and statements of activities.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9, CHANGE IN NET ASSETS:

Change in fair value of interest rate swap $102,000. Beneficial interest in assets held by affiliate $1,827,008.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT OVERVIEW:

In addition to providing charity care for four (4) long term residents at an annual cost of nearly $560,000, melmark is actively in involved in numerous community outreach and professional education and training activities. In addition, melmark benefits from a tremendous group of volunteers that provide many hours of service and support to the organization. Melmark's leading community ambassadors are the "joybells", a delightful and talented bell choir group comprised of adults with intellectual disability, many of whom have been residents at melmark for over 35 years. The joybells have performed more than 1,500 concerts since their inception in 1970. Those performances include appearances with the chamber orchestra of philadelphia at the kimmel center, during which more than 2,000 audience members witnessed the musical talents of adults with intellectual disabilities; a performance at a philadelphia phillies game, with more than 40,000 audience members; and, over the past, concerts at the white house and the pennsylvania governor's mansion. Melmark is widely regarded as a leading provider in both the philadelphia & boston areas, in providing both community outreach to families of the developmentally disabled and professional education and training to those in our field. Melmark's widely published and highly accomplished professionals are typically involved in 50 to 60 presentations each year. Community outreach activities address issues related to children and young adults with autism and improving life at school and home. Melmark's expert speaker series provides professional education and training on a wide range of clinical and applied behavioral analysis (aba) topics and is open to parents, professional colleagues and area college students pursuing a career in this field. Over the past year, over 4,000 service hours were provided by nearly 650 volunteers. Whether they are decorating for the holiday season, organizing fundraisers or creating fun events for the children and adults melmark serves, volunteers make an incredible impact on lives of all at melmark. Volunteers include corporate partners, church and community groups, area high school students and many long term volunteers committed to actively participating in carrying out melmark's mission. In addition, many melmark residents also volunteer in the community.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from income tax under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. Accordingly, no provision for federal and state income taxes have been recognized in the accompanying financial statements. It is not likely that the organization's tax exempt position would be challened and subject to tax consequences within the next year. However, the organizations tax years from 2011 to 2014 remain subject to examination by tax jurisdiction under both federal and state statues of limitations.

PART XI, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Occupational therapy program revenue reported in seperate return 54,761. Beneficial interest in assets held by affiliate 1,827,008.

PART XII, LINE 2D - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:

Occupational therapy program revenue reported in seperate return 81,012.
