Activity 2

Children and Family ServicesKSSs Children and Family Services offer a fully integrated system of early education, early intervention and individualized behavioral health care services for children and families through its children and family services. Applying an innovative, multi-dimensional, and holistic perspective, KSS considers the child and their family within the entire context of home, family, school and community and work to help each succeed in these important realms. KSS strengthens children and families in their own communities as they strive to achieve immediate and long-term success.Approximately 2,978 individuals receive services through these programs.Notable accomplishments for fiscal year 2013 include:Capital Area Head Start was one of three recipients of a Pre-K Counts competitive grant for a five year term. Nearly every child in CAHS had health insurance, immunizations, medical provider and dental provider by the end of the school year. Susquehanna Service Dogs placed 15 service dogs this past fiscal year. The placements were made for individuals or facility dogs. SSD also had a very successful camp in which 27 children and 27 dogs participated.

Activity 3

Mental Health ServicesKSSs Mental Health Adult Services directs, supports and empowers people who experience mental illness to develop the means to live with dignity and respect in communities of their choice, with meaningful relationships and in valued social roles. KSS provides services in 14 counties in Pennsylvania, and 2 counties in Maryland through a network of services designed to meet the specific and unique needs of each person experiencing mental illness through programs Residential Homes Services, Community-Based Supports, and employment supports. Services are offered in a variety of settings ranging from the homes of the individuals served to KSS owned homes, the community, employment centers, psychiatric rehabilitation programs, and drop-in centers. KSS served 1,268 individuals through its mental health services.Notable accomplishments for fiscal year 2013 include:Despite funding reductions up to 10% of previous levels, KSS was able to increase the total number of individuals served by 24% during the fiscal year.Members of KSSs Mental Health Leadership Council have been consistently requested by an instructor at Harrisburg Area Community College to share their stories of recovery from mental illness. The professor reports this is usually the most powerful class they have during the semester. There were two members of the Leadership Council selected for training by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill to offer Peer to Peer classes in Dauphin County.
