“Trustees walter j. Gamble and anne c. Gamble, m.d. Are husband and wife.”
“A copy of the organization's final form 990 (including required schedules), as ultimately filed with the irs, was provided for review to each voting member of the organization's governing body in electronic form prior to its filing with the irs. In addition, the organization's chair of the committee on board effectiveness (trustee), president (officer), vice president of finance & operations (officer), and accounting manager (staff) each independently conducted a thorough review of the prepared form 990 before it was filed. The form 990 was reviewed and approved by the organization's audit committee prior to distribution to the governing body and filing with the irs.”
“The organization monitors throughout the year proposed and ongoing transactions for conflicts of interest. The organization's conflict of interest policy covers trustees, officers, and senior managers. Trustees, officers, and senior managers are required to disclose their interests that could give rise to conflicts of interest upon election or appointment and thereafter annually or otherwise as changed circumstances may warrant. Persons with a conflict are prohibited from being present for or participating in the governing body's deliberations and decisions with respect to the transaction.”
“The process for determining the compensation of the top management official and officers other than the top management official included review and approval by the executive committee, which acts as the compensation committee of the governing body. No persons with a conflict of interest with respect to the compensation arrangement at issue were involved. The executive committee used data as to comparable compensation for similarly qualified persons in functionally comparable positions at similarly situated organizations. The deliberations and decisions regarding the compensation arrangement were contemporaneously documented and the records kept. After the compensation of the above officers was determined by the executive committee, such compensation was considered and reviewed by the governing body. The process was used to establish compensation of the persons who served in the offices of president (officer and top management official) and vice president of finance & operations (officer). The process was last undertaken in 2014.”
“The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, tax return (form 990), and audited financial statements available to the general public. The public documents are available for inspection at the organization's office in manomet, ma. In addition, the organization's form 990 is made available to the public through posting on the ma attorney general's website and on charity navigator's website. The organization's form 990 and 990-t are also posted on manomet's website, www.manomet.org.”
“At manomet we believe people can live and work today in ways that will enable our world to thrive and prosper tomorrow. Creating a thriving and prosperous world with finite resources is one of the biggest challenges of our time. To take on a challenge this big, most people will need to be a part of the solution. As a result, manomet is showing how we can create a sustainable future. Our expert staff bring decades of experience working across sectors, providing strategic advice and practical solutions. From our world-renowned bird conservation work to our sustainable business solutions, we create successful, scalable strategies. We know lasting change must happen throughout an organization, so manomet engages people at every level. Manomet is named for the coastal village in new england where our headquarters have been for more than 45 years. A native american word, the name manomet means portage path. We embrace the legacy of this name in our mission by charting pathways to a thriving future and providing guidance along the way. As manomet approaches its sixth decade, we have achieved a great deal; yet there is still much work ahead. We are forging a pathway for our generation and those to come.”
“Manomet focuses its programs where it will have measurable impact and create the most opportunity for scale: 1. Sustainable economies-advising partners on practices to enhance economic viability and human well-being while measurably reducing their environmental footprint. 2. Climate services-integrating science and stakeholder networks to identify and implement nature-based solutions to climate change. 3. Shorebird recovery-engaging a diverse coalition of people and organizations across the americas to develop and implement science-based solutions to conserve imperiled shorebirds. 4. Connecting to nature-using long-term research and education to connect people to nature. Key accomplishments in fy 2014: sustainable economies 1. Completed a climate change adaptation plan for the vermont agency of natural resources that will guide a limited forestry harvest at the narrows wildlife management area. 2. Established partnerships with jay peak resort and the circumburke race in vermont for manomet's clear water carbon fund. The resort and race offered participants the opportunity to reduce the carbon emitted by their travel by purchasing trees through the fund. 3. Enrolled weis supermarket chain, hy-vee grocery stores, and associated grocers of new england stores in manomet's grocery stewardship certification. 4. Completed a calculator that allows state officials in missouri, tennessee, south carolina, and kentucky to measure their hospitality sector's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water use, energy consumption, and chemical use. 5. Secured participation from small business development centers and women business centers in new england states, who will use manomet's root360 business sustainability tool to support their clients. 6. Completed certification of all 182 hannaford supermarket stores, making it easy for them to become measurably more sustainable. 7. Released a collaborative report "climate change and biodiversity in maine: vulnerability of habitats and priority species". The report, the most extensive species assessment in any state to date, found that more than a third of maine's species have high vulnerability to climate change. Testified to the maine legislature's joint committee on agriculture and natural resources about the findings in the report.”
“8. Authored "late-successional and old-growth forest carbon temporal dynamics in the northern forest (northeastern usa)", which was accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal forest ecology and management. Published another article "late-successional and old-growth forests in the northeastern united states: structure, dynamics, and prospects for restoration" in the journal forests. The papers found that the northern forests of new england could store more carbon and significantly help reduce the threat of climate change but existing management strategies are not adequate for this task. 9. Hosted an important "defining success" workshop to create a portrait of what a thriving, diversified, sustainable fishing industry would look like in downeast maine. 10. Completed a scientific analysis of the economic value of bath, maine's urban forest. The trees provide more than $60 per resident in benefits, including pollution removal, aesthetic value, carbon sequestration, and storm water regulation and cost only $13 per resident per year to maintain. 11. Presented manomet's "weather-wise workbook" for local climate change adaption to more than 150 land trust staff and foresters in northern new england. The workbook helps small woodlot owners understand the myriad ways trees can help deal with climate change. 12. Pioneered the heal eddy restoration project in georgetown, maine to restore sub-productive clam flats by testing protective netting over the flats to exclude the predatory green crab. An invasive species, the green crab has been decimating softshell clam populations in maine, threatening both the natural ecosystem and the shellfish industry. Climate services 1. Enrolled 13 million acres of forestland in manomet's climate smart land network. 2. Presented on planning for climate change at the massachusetts green career conference and the southern new england planning conference. 3. Developed and delivered manomet's climate 101 presentation and engaged with timber landowners and their staff about climate change. 4. Updated manomet's climate smart checklist, which guides landowners in reducing the material risk of their timberland to climate change. 5. Presented manomet's climate change adaptation plan for the taunton river watershed in southeastern massachusetts that is now being used by the environmental protection agency to identify and prioritize projects that will increase the watershed's health and resilience. 6. Launched the new website for manomet's climate smart land network. 7. Developed and launched a regular monthly "climate services bulletin" for members of manomet's climate smart land network.”
“Shorebird recovery 1. Sent a delegation to santa marta, colombia for the 5th western hemisphere shorebird group meeting. 2. Strengthened the atlantic flyways shorebird conservation business strategy. 3. Led shorebird ecology workshops in texas for biologists from mexico and the u.s. 4. Completed 6th consecutive successful field season with elevated nesting success of american oystercatchers on the atlantic coast. Shared lessons from the manomet-led northeast oystercatcher recovery partnership to help design a much broader program for all species using the atlantic flyway. 5. Conducted a comprehensive aerial survey from long island to southern texas of american oystercatchers that revealed encouraging results for population recovery in the past decade. 6. Hosted a regional celebration of the first world shorebirds day to raise awareness for the importance of regular bird monitoring as the core element of bird protection and habitat conservation. 7. Documented the potential impact on nesting migratory shorebirds of an oil spill near galveston bay, texas and the bolivar flats shorebird sanctuary. 8. Recovered 41 geolocators from semipalmated sandpipers tagged in 2013. Analyzed the data, which shows remarkable details of the long-distance migrations of this species, and presented results at the waterbird society meeting in mexico. 9. Added the 90th site to the western hemisphere shorebird reserve network-bahia de tobari, on the eastern side of the gulf of california in sonora, mexico. It is a site of international importance with at least 44,000 shorebirds representing 16 species recorded there in december 2013. 10. Led good governance workshops in chile and peru to teach governmental agencies, nonprofits, and local communities how to work together to manage common natural resources. 11. Flipped more than 31,000 horseshoe crabs through manomet's return the favor project, which calls on local citizens to rescue overturned horseshoe crabs in delaware bay, new jersey. Horseshoe crab eggs are a critical food resource for shorebirds that use delaware bay as a refueling stopover site during migration. 12. Co-led the arctic migratory bird initiative and identified priority actions and drafted an action plan to address coastal habitat loss and degradation in northern south america, with a focus on red knot and semipalmated sandpiper.”
“Science education 1. Handled more than 3,000 birds and banded more than 2,000 new birds during fall migration, above average numbers. 2. Surpassed again the 1,000-visitor mark for students for the year. Visiting groups represented all grade levels from elementary school field trips to graduate school students. 3. Held the 1st climate lab workshop for teachers and instructed 13 teachers from five schools in setting up transects and establishing climate labs at their schools. Subsequently visited all five schools to ensure proper establishment. 4. Wrote and published "final flight: 10 northeastern birding spots at risk from climate change", available on amazon. 5. Convened the 40th annual manomet christmas bird count, which showed declining numbers of some wintering waterfowl and large gull species and increasing numbers of southern species expanding their ranges northward with climate change. 6. During the spring migration, notable among early captures were a dark-eyed junco (slate colored subspecies) and a white-throated sparrow hybrid. Observed trends showing some species, such as american robin, returning earlier to new england, adjusting their migration to global warming. 7. Received a prestigious grant from the national science foundation to build and implement manomet's climate lab curriculum in massachusetts. Climate lab is designed to give students local field experience collecting and analyzing data on biotic and abiotic indicators of climate change. 8. Published a new paper in "studies in avian biology" on the timing of migration as correlated with climate change. Manomet's campaign for a sustainable future grocery stewardship certification (gsc) this project engages grocery stores and their employees in becoming measurably more sustainable. There are 37,000+ grocery stores in the u.s., they use more energy than any other retailer, and employ 3.4 million people. With americans visiting their community grocery stores an average of twice per week, that's over 3,000 individuals visiting each store per day. The gsc increases operational sustainability and employee engagement. Thousands of businesses and tens-of-thousands of employees will become active participants in improving their stores' sustainability practices-with measurable impacts and verifiable results.”
“Specifically, the gsc provides grocery stores with the systems-based tools necessary to address energy consumption, water use, waste management, product sourcing, and other sustainability measures. This is achieved by manomet staff leading in-store gsc trainings for store associates and utilizing our unique gsc workbooks. We provide in-depth technical assistance and review their gsc workbooks when conducting store visits. We provide a three-year re-certification, a structure that promotes continual improvement and engagement. Impact goal: enroll 2,000 grocery stores. Climate smart land network (csln) america depends on its landscapes for clean water, forest products, food, and wildlife habitat. Foresters and farmers tell us that droughts, floods, insects, fires, increased air temperature, and severe storms are changing their land. These climate changes will increase in the coming decades. Landowners can prepare for climate change, and csln provides the pathway and technical support. We are focusing on private commercial timberlands to implement this program. There are some 440 million acres of commercial timberland in north america, and this huge land base will play a major role in sequestering carbon and keeping water clean with changing precipitation patterns. Csln is a voluntary, nationwide program teaching forestry companies how to recognize, plan for and mitigate climate change. Csln advises forestland owners on climate resilient management practices, serving as the junction between science and decision making. Strategies include: planting different species, creating infrastructure that can withstand a variety of weather conditions, and using buffers along streams and wetlands to slow down storm water and prevent sediment from entering bodies of water. Manomet staff conduct field visits with enrolled companies. Field visits result in insights for land managers that never occur indoors or over the phone. Such visits are a unique aspect of manomet's csln. Impact goal: enroll 30 million acres across north america.”
“Root-360 every day, more businesses are recognizing the need to include sustainability in their core business strategy to compete in today's marketplace. According to the small business administration, there are approximately six million small businesses in the u.s., representing 99% of employers and 55% of jobs. Small businesses don't have the resources, financially or in personnel, to engage the expensive and complicated programs appropriate for large corporations. Root360 is dedicated to creating a balanced relationship between our modern economy and the natural world. The goal of root360 is to engage small and medium sized businesses as a sustainability partner to help them improve performance across the environmental, social and governance spectrum. It is a gateway for small businesses to benchmark and improve their sustainable business practices, increase economic viability, and improve quality of experience for their workers, customers, and communities. Recently launched, the root360 web portal includes a benchmarking tool, impact calculators, a resource library, and the ability to connect with business counselors and consultants. Users will have access to a dynamic dashboard that shows their performance relative to peers and track progress over time. The program captures both qualitative (case studies) and quantitative (performance metrics) data. Impact goal: enroll 8,000 businesses. Habitats for shorebirds many species of shorebirds are in serious decline or on the endangered species list. Climate change, real estate development, erosion and human disturbances all degrade essential feeding and breeding grounds. Quality habitat is key to reversing these declines. By engaging with wetland managers, we can create new habitat for these species. Habitats for shorebirds engages wetlands managers in the field. We are teaching them how to recognize, plan for and mitigate climate change impacts to their properties. At the same time, they are learning how to integrate and implement shorebird habitat improvements into their current management practices through a four-phase process. Project staff first identify key properties. The second phase consists of engaging interested wetlands managers-explaining the project and gaining commitment and the ability to move forward. In the third phase, advisory, project staff conduct a site visit on the property with the wetlands manager. The fourth phase, implementation, is where the action takes place. Here, wetlands managers are implementing the recommendations from the advisory phase. We are increasing the pace and scale of on-the-ground shorebird conservation in all four western hemisphere flyways: atlantic, mississippi, central, and pacific. We are alleviating shorebird habitat declines, increasing shorebird habitat availability, and boosting annual survival rates. Impact goal: enroll 500,000 acres of wetlands.”

“The endowment consists of donor-restricted and board-designated funds. Principal of donor-restricted endowment funds is kept in perpetuity and all the income earned on principal is to be used for research initiative purposes.”
“Manomet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. Manomet has identified its tax status as a tax exempt entity as its only significant tax position; however, manomet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. Manomet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Manomet's federal and state tax returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.”
