“A copy of the organization's final Form 990 is provided for review to each voting member of the organization's governing body in electronic form prior to its filing with the IRS. At the request of certain donors, we redact those donor names and addresses from Schedule B of the Form 990 that is provided to the full governing body. The organization's President (officer), chief operating & financial officer, and Comptroller (staff) each independently conduct a thorough review of the complete prepared Form 990 before it is filed. The complete Form 990 is reviewed and approved by the organization's audit committee prior to distribution to the governing body and filing with the IRS.”
“The organization monitors proposed and ongoing transactions for conflicts of interest. The organization's conflict of interest policy covers trustees, officers, and senior managers. Trustees, officers, and senior managers are required to disclose their interests that could give rise to conflicts of interest upon election or appointment and thereafter annually or otherwise as changed circumstances may warrant. Persons with a conflict are prohibited from being present for or participating in the governing body's deliberations and decisions with respect to the transaction.”
“The process for determining the compensation of the top management official and officers other than the top management official included review and approval by the Executive Committee, which acts as the compensation committee of the governing body. No persons with a conflict of interest with respect to the compensation arrangement at issue were involved. The Executive Committee used data as to comparable compensation for similarly qualified persons in functionally comparable positions at similarly situated organizations. The deliberations and decisions regarding the compensation arrangement were contemporaneously documented and the records kept. After the compensation of the above officers was determined by the Executive Committee, such compensation was considered and reviewed by the governing body. The process was used to establish compensation of the persons who served in the offices of President (officer and top management official) and chief operating & Financial officer. The process was last undertaken in 2017.”
“The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, tax return (Form 990), and audited financial statements available to the general public. The public documents are available for inspection at the organization's office in Manomet, MA. In addition, the organization's Form 990 is made available to the public through posting on the MA Attorney General's website and on Charity Navigator's website. The organization's audited financial statements and Form 990 and 990-T are also posted on Manomet's website, www.manomet.org.”
“Manomet's mission is applying science and engaging people to sustain our world. At Manomet, we believe people can live and work today in ways that will enable our world to thrive and prosper tomorrow. As scientists, we understand we must take action to sustain our world. How we manage the critical systems that support life on earth will need to be transformed in the next two decades. Manomet works on four major life- supporting systems: natural, forest, food and economic. We focus our work on the parts of the system where we can have measurable impact and opportunity for scale. Manomet makes it possible for the people who manage these systems to change and improve them. Natural system: Manomet works on parts of the natural system that are declining dramatically-wetlands and shorebird species-and through landbird research and education to create opportunities that connect people to nature. Forest system: Manomet works on managed forest landscapes and coastal watersheds because they present a great opportunity for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Food system: Manomet works on the parts of the food system that use the most resources-grocery stores and agriculture-and on fisheries to create more efficient food systems. Economic system: Manomet works on the parts of the economic system where small changes have a big impact and therefore present the greatest opportunity to enhance economic viability and reduce environmental footprints across all systems. Manomet's approach is different- we effect meaningful change by engaging the people who manage these systems. We listen-Manomet develops strong relationships with partners and Stakeholders. We understand-Manomet works closely with people to discover their Needs. We are scientists-Manomet conducts and applies science to inform Change. We make change possible-Manomet provides practical solutions to Complex problems.”
“Key accomplishments in FY 2017: Climate services: Climate Smart Land Network We received a Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. (SFI) grant to support development of the Resiliency Assessment Framework. This Framework is a scalable approach for assessing forest resilience to climate change, demonstrating the adaptation and mitigation value of forestlands certified to SFI, and incorporating climate opportunities and risks in planning and management. The SFI grant provides a great opportunity for Manomet to work with our Climate Smart Land Network members to improve understanding of regional and local climate/forest interactions and to incorporate that information in planning and management. We have over 18 million acres enrolled in CSLN, with members located throughout the U.S., across New England, the southeast, California, and Washington State. In 2018, we seek to add an additional 5 million acres, working steadily toward our goal of 30 million by 2020. Watershed Resiliency Manomet is leading the first part of this project that is intended to increase availability of green infrastructure approaches to local land managers. We have completed the regional green infrastructure analysis and a data package that includes both the GIS shapefiles and high-resolution image files to be made available for download by localities in the watershed, regional planning agencies, and other land use and conservation decision makers. A series of five workshops to engage local land managers on green infrastructure planning is complete. The workshops were held at multiple locations in the watershed to engage as many of the localities as possible. Manomet is continuing to work with EPA to quantify climate and land use impacts on water quality and water balance in a sub-area of the Taunton watershed using the WMOST model. This effort will provide insight on the cost/benefit tradeoffs associated with differing future land use and best management practice alternatives. In 2018, we will continue to expand the application of green infrastructure within Taunton and make curriculum available throughout Massachusetts. By 2020, we will expand the availability of tools and techniques in the Taunton Watershed to other regions. Landbird conservation: Banding lab This year (our 52nd in operation), we banded 3,321 new birds and recaptured 2,036, totaling 5,357 birds captured and processed in the spring and fall. Notable species captured include a female Golden-winged Warbler on October 4th-of which we have only banded one in four of the last 10 autumns-and a decidedly out-of-habitat Saltmarsh Sparrow on September 1st. In 2018, we will publish a popular report and two scientific papers on our 50+ years of migration data. We welcomed over 800 visitors for both formal and informal educational demonstrations. Visitors included: Manomet members, schools, universities, birders, photographers, local community members and beyond. We held 2 four-part birding crash course series in the spring and summer/fall, as well as our traditional, biannual "Family Day at the Banding Lab" in June and October. Climate lab Since 2014, we have engaged more than 1,200 students, 29 teachers, and seven school systems across Massachusetts and southeast Maine. In 2018, we will submit a revised proposal to the National Science Foundation (our primary funder for this project) with changes based on lessons learned from our operative experience. We will also expand to California schools through Point Blue Conservation Science, a partner in science education. Education and outreach We formed a new partnership with the Jerusalem Bird Observatory and participated in a staff exchange this past fall to connect about and demonstrate our respective education, data management, and community outreach programs. With their accompaniment, we converged with bird observatories from around the world at the second annual International Bird Observatory Conference in Cape May, New Jersey in October. In 2018, we wi”
“Shorebird recovery: Shorebird science: Arctic Research Our research on the Canning River Delta in 2017 was focused on answering questions about the movement and habitat use of Semipalmated Sandpipers and Dunlin after the breeding season is complete. We color-banded for long-term survival and movement studies and took blood and swab samples for USGS biologists to track the occurrence of avian influenza. We also deployed cameras at shorebird nests to determine what nest predators are and if this is a good technique to use in the future. This project is part of a larger two-year initiative at multiple sites across the Alaskan Arctic. In 2018, we will complete three manuscripts on our research and retrieve Canning River tags and deploy GPS pinpoint tags to continue tracking and monitoring these focal species. Shorebird habitat management We conducted the first citizen-science based Whimbrel count in the Acadian Peninsula. The results of this count help inform decision making and conservation actions on the ground, particularly to establish commitments from farmers not to harass or shoot Whimbrel for using their land to feed and rest during migration. In 2018, we will continue outreach efforts and maintain and expand our tracking efforts on Whimbrel along the east coast. In April, we hosted one of our largest workshops in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, attended by 40 participants with a waitlist of 20 additional people. Workshop participants represented a wide variety of organizations in Argentina, including the local Port Authorities, protected areas, birding, fishing, and nautical clubs, University, federal agencies, and representatives from other Argentinian WHSRN sites. In 2018, we will improve 100,000 acres and deliver five workshops in four countries. Site conservation: western hemisphere shorebird reserve network (WHSRN) We named the 100th WHSRN site of important shorebird habitat this year: the Georgia Barrier Islands. This site serves as an important location for several species, including the threatened rufa Red Knot, Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher, Short-billed Dowitcher, and Black-bellied Plover. Georgia's barrier islands are owned and managed by a diverse group of private and public entities, many of which have committed to the WHSRN designation. Together, they comprise 79,709 acres or 32,257 hectares that have been included within the WHSRN Landscape designation. The network also continues to foster engagement with existing sites, including focal locations Chiloe Island and the Gulf of Fonseca. In 2018, we will build local capacity for habitat management and site governance in three municipalities, and begin to build alliance between shrimp farmers and shorebird conservationists, respectively. WHSRN was awarded one of four 2017 Wings Across the Americas awards for International Cooperation. These awards recognize the achievements of Forest Service employees and their partners in bird, bat, butterfly, and dragonfly conservation. Site Conservation: Delaware Bay In 2017, we educated students from 16 schools, installed 23 educational shorebird conservation signs on beaches across Delaware and New Jersey, conducted 32 field trips and presentations, rescued 131,024 horseshoe crabs with reTURN the Favor partners, and reached 1,688 people during the annual outreach event, May on the Bay. In 2018, we will rescue 150,000 more crabs, deploy 10 stewards, and educate 3,000 people, as well as publish a comprehensive engagement manual.”
“SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIES: Grocery Stewardship Certification (GSC) With over 750 stores enrolled in the GSC, we are the leading grocery sustainability program in the U.S. We've added stores under several chains, including Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market who enrolled 32 stores in Colorado, five in Utah, five in the Phoenix area, and six in Texas in 2017. Added to the 36 Texas stores already enrolled, this totals 84 Sprouts stores that now are a part of the GSC. In 2018, we will explore the plausibility of converting the GSC to a coalition model to help boost participation and continue to push toward our goal of 800 stores with improved practices and 2,000 with completed sustainability assessments by 2020. Downeast Fisheries Partnership (DFP) We installed two new fishways on the outlets of ponds feeding in the Bagaduce River, which drains into Penobscot Bay. Fostered by the DFP's efforts to bring together partners interested in alewife restoration, this addition will aid in the restoration of alewives, a commercially harvested fish in Maine, which also serves as the base of river and coastal food webs. Its resurgence is poised to make a great impact on the ecological productivity of the Gulf of Maine. In 2018, a three-year strategic and fundraising plan to support the DFP's future efforts/goal-building will be developed. Marine Fisheries Science We have expanded staff expertise in fisheries science by adding Dr. Marissa McMahan to the Sustainable Economies team in September. Dr. McMahan serves as Manomet's Senior Fisheries Scientist and will work to investigate solutions to the negative impacts climate change has had on the Gulf of Maine's ecological structure. Her work will help drive the restoration of key species harvested by commercial fishermen in the gulf. Vital Capital Index Manomet conducted a study of the role of the dairy industry in Massachusetts and found that dairy farmers increase their use of practices that protect soil health, water quality, and wildlife. This information provides insight on how dairy farming in Massachusetts plays an important role in sustaining rural communities, and that state and federal programs have helped improve their farm business, conserve farmland, protect the environment, minimize negative impacts, and ultimately enhance their viability. In 2018, we will work to help improve practices on 40 farms and work toward our goal of 200 by 2020. U360 This year, the experiential college internship program engaged a total 33 students from major colleges and universities across New England during the spring and fall semesters. We hosted the first-ever Business Sustainability Student Competition, sponsored by Eastern Bank, in Boston last May and will repeat the event in 2018. Over a third of business participants in 2017 expressed that they would likely change their practices in the next 6-12 months as a result of their experience. In 2018, we will form partnerships with five universities and 40 new student participants, and engage with small business owners to produce 400 student-led sustainability action plans. Sustainable agriculture We have devised an environmental sustainability framework to create a new standard in agriculture. In 2018, we will continue to move forward with the framework for measuring and managing agriculture sustainability with Hancock Natural Resources Group.”

“Manomet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. Manomet has identified its tax status as a tax exempt entity as its only significant tax position; however, Manomet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. Manomet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Manomet's Federal and state tax returns are generally open for examination for three years following the date filed.”
