Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PAGE 12, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization has a comittee with oversight of the audit of its financial statements. This has not changed since the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART III, LINE 1A:

The collections, which were acquired through purchases and contributions since science history institute's inception, are not recognized as assets on the consolidated statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as donor-restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors.

PART III, LINE 4:

Science history institute, in conjunction with its affiliate science history institute support company, has a collection of donated and purchased books, manuscripts, artifacts and scientific instruments that are held for education, research, scientific and curatorial purposes. Each of the items is cataloged, preserved and cared for, and activities verifying their existence and assessing their condition are performed continuously. The collections are subject to a policy that requires proceeds from their sales, if any, to be used to acquire other items for collections. The organization also has several collections of art held for exhibition, preservation, education and research purposes. The organization has a museum, which is open to the public free of charge, and displays and interprets many items from its collections.
