Publications - [1] dna newsletter, focus is a 12-page bi-monthly mailed publication offering practice and member news, organizational updates, and an event calendar. [2] dna e-news is a monthly email publication offering the latest in dermatology practice news and information for use in dermatology nurse practice settings. [3] dna journal - the journal of the dermatology nurses' association is a bi-monthly peer reviewed publication offering members and other subscribers scholarly research, articles and information for use in practice or research in dermatology.
Activity 3
Workshops and other forums - [1] dna fundamentals in phototherapy workshop - this special phototherapy program was developed by dna in tribute to joan shelk, dna past president and the developer of dna's first workshop. The workshop is an intensive one-day training for those administering light therapy under a doctor's supervision. The workshop covers psoriasis and other photo-responsive skin diseases, such as puva, narrow and broad band uvb therapy, equipment operation and metering, and other responsibilities associated with phototherapy administration.[2] nurse practitioner forum - 2 day educational event offered in conjunction with the dna annual convention targeted to the educational and professional development needs of nurse practitioners in dermatology. In 2011, topics included scholarly reviews of pediatric dermatology, infectious diseases, cutaneous malignancies, dermatology and pregnancy issues, hair and nail disorders, and contact dermatitis.[3] cosmetic and laser workshop - 1 day session offered in conjunction with the dna annual convention that encompassed the legal requirements, patient safety, and scope of practice of dermatology nurses and other healthcare professionals, and included the following topics: (a) basic physics behind lasers and light technologies, (b) legislation that affects practice, (c) strategies to create a safe environment, (d) basic knowledge (anatomy, approved products and their actions) for injecting cosmetic products, (e) value added products and procedures for your practice, (f) myths and realities of cosmetic techniques, and (g) new technologies. [4] skin cancer workshop - a full-day workshop offered in conjunction with the dna annual convention that provided the attendee with a broad overview of new developments in skin cancer ranging from prognostic factors to the latest therapies. Emphasis placed on what the dermatology nurse needs to know about skin cancer including how it is diagnosed, managed and followed. Topics also included how skin cancers evolve, the role of a melanoma np will typical and atypical patient presentations. The current landscape of treatments for advanced melanoma were reviewed focusing on novel agents, how they work, and what dermatology nurses should know about toxicities related to these agents. A general overview of the immune system, immunotherapeutic agents, their use in melanoma and other skin cancers was reviewed including the management of the skin related toxicities from these agents. The role of pregnancy and melanoma, personal prevention strategies for patients, what the dermatology nurse can do to advocate for community prevention tactics such as the sunaware program, with health fairs, involvement with school health curriculum, and implementing mass skin cancer screenings. [5] lpn workshop - this inaugural program offered in conjunction with the dna annual convention included a discussion of the scope of practice of the lpn/lvn with specifics as they pertain to dermatology practice and review of surgical procedures, wound care, and telephone triage responsibilities. A post-test was administered to assess participant's understanding the material presented, and to assist the dna in identifying future learning needs for this target audience.
