Mission and Program Overview
Mission
One by one's mission is to help end obstetric fistula and improve the lives of women and girls suffering with this childbirth injury.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Health and development international - niger, (hdi) we are very proud to have continued our partnership with hdi throughout 2011 in support of a highly successful fistula prevention project in the bankilare region of niger. This is an extremely remote area (there is one unpaved road) inhabited mostly by nomads and subsistence farmers. Prior to the initiation of this innovative project, the bankilare region produced more cases of obstetric fistula than almost any other region of the country, and obstructed labor was one of the leading causes of maternal death. Three years ago, a dedicated team put in place the simple education, communication and transport systems needed to support safe childbirth in the region. The project has trained hundreds of volunteers (men and women) to do outreach and education about pre-natal care, the importance of delivering with a trained birth attendant, and when and how to evacuate a woman to a clinic or hospital when labor becomes obstructed. The impact of this grassroots program has been nothing short of phenomenal. There have been no maternal deaths due to obstructed labor since the program began, and obstetric fistula has been virtually eliminated in the project area. These results are a powerful demonstration that improving maternal health and preventing fistula is possible, even under very challenging circumstances. The program is now being expanded to cover other regions in niger. Moreover, one by one will continue to work with hdi to ensure that it serves as a model for prevention work in other countries as well. - 263,000 people in an area the size of rhode island - 100% reduction of obstructed labor mortality and fistula incidence to zero
- Activity 3
- Apda - preventionethiopiaafar pastoralist development association (apda) we continued to support the tremendous efforts of apda to bring vital maternity services to the afar region of ethiopia. Home to approximately 1.3 million mostly pastoralist people, the afar region has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world and a very high incidence of obstetric fistula. With support from one by one in 2011, apda added much needed equipment to their new hosptial facility so they could begin offering emergency c-sections to rural women. We are very gratified to have contributed to building the capacity of this tremendously important new facility that will save the lives of mothers and babies and prevent fistula.

| IRS990/Activity2/Description | 0 | HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERNATIONAL - NIGER, (HDI) WE ARE VERY PROUD TO HAVE CONTINUED OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH HDI THROUGHOUT 2011 IN SUPPORT OF A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FISTULA PREVENTION PROJECT IN THE BANKILARE REGION OF NIGER. - 263,000 PEOPLE IN AN AREA THE SIZE OF RHODE ISLAND - 100% REDUCTION OF OBSTRUCTED LABOR MORTALITY AND FISTULA INCIDENCE TO ZERO |

| IRS990/ActivityOther/Description | 0 | BUGANDO MEDICAL CENTER - ULTRASOUND RESEARCHTHROUGHOUT 2011, WE CONTINUED OUR INVOLVEMENT IN GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH THAT MAY LEAD TO AN IMPORTANT NEW TOOL FOR FISTULA PREVENTION EFFORTS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NORTHWEST COMPANIES, PHILIPS HEALTHCARE, SONOSITE, AND AN INCREDIBLE TEAM AT BUGANDO MEDICAL CENTER IN TANZANIA, WE ARE STUDYING WHETHER ULTRASOUND CAN BE USED TO IDENTIFY WOMEN IN EARLY PREGNANCY THAT ARE AT HIGH RISK OF EXPERIENCING OBSTRUCTED LABOR AND DEVELOPING FISTULA WITHOUT PROPER CARE. AN EFFECTIVE SCREENING TOOL LIKE THIS COULD HELP ENSURE THAT WOMEN WHO ARE MOST LIKELY TO NEED SPECIAL CARE DURING DELIVERY RECEIVE VITAL EDUCATION ABOUT BIRTH PLANNING AND PREPAREDNESS. WHEN THE EXTRAORDINARY ULTRASOUND MACHINES THAT WERE DONATED FOR THIS STUDY ARE NOT BEING USED FOR THE RESEARCH, THEY ARE BENEFITING ALL PATIENTS AT BUGANDO MEDICAL CENTER. THE STUDY ENROLLED ITS FINAL PATIENT IN OCTOBER 2011. STUDY RESULTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE PUBLISHED IN 2012-2013 AFTER CAREFUL ANALYSIS. |
| IRS990/ActivityOther/Description | 1 | SARAH OMEGA KIDANGASI - ONE BY ONE'S OUTREACH MANAGER FOR "LET'S END FISTULA" - IN 2011 ONE BY ONE LAUNCHED ITS NEW AND LARGEST PROGRAMMATIC INITIATIVE TO DATE TO BUILD A MODEL WHERE FISTULA CAN END IN ONE BOUNDED REGION. WE CHOSE WESTERN KENYA BECAUSE OF THE CAPACITY OF EXISTING PARTNERS TO FORM A FUNCTIONING COLLABORATIVE SYSTEM TO OFFER WOMEN THE COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT THEY NEED ALONG WITH THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INNOVATIVE PREVENTION PROGRAMMING. LET'S END FISTULA IS WORKING THROUGH RURAL REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES, TRAINED AND SUPPORTED BY ONE BY ONE, TO FIND FISTULA SURVIVORS, BRING THEM IN FOR FREE TREATMENT, AND THEN SUPPORT THEM MEDICALLY, PSYCHOSOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY WITH INCOME GENERATION OPPORTUNITIES ONCE THEY RETURN HOME. ONE BY ONE HAS BUILT THE TRAINING PLATFORM WITH OUR STAFF OF KENYAN WOMEN AND WE SUPPORT THE REPRESENTATIVES IN THEIR WORK, THEIR DATA COLLECTION AND IN TRAINING AND RE-TRAINING THEM TO CONTINUE TO DO HIGH QUALITY WORK. MS. OMEGA IS ONE BY ONE'S OUTREACH MANAGER FOR KENYA AND AS SUCH SHE MANAGED THE REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES, HELPED DESIGN PROGRAM, MANAGED OUR KENYAN FINANCES AND ENSURED THAT FISTULA PATIENTS RECEIVE FREE TRANSPORT TO AND FROM A FACILITY AND RECEIVED FREE TREATMENT. |
