Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The 990 is presented to the Board of Directors in draft form. Board members review the form and staff address any questions the Board may have in regards to the document.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

One Equal Heart has a written conflict of interest policy, which Board members review and sign annually. The policy requires disclosure of interests, relationships and holdings that could potentially result in a conflict of interest. Board members are also requested to disclose, on an ongoing basis, any potential conflicts of interest in an organizational transaction or decision, which would affect themselves, their family members, their employer or associates. Board members may not participate in discussion or voting on such matters.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The steps the board takes are as follows: -Delegate to the Governance Committee of the Board of Directors to determine the compensation of the Executive Director. -Conduct research regarding a similar position, in a similar size organization with a similar mission in a similar geographic locale. -Write a compensation policy. -Write and approve an offer for the candidate. This process was used in 2019 to hire the Executive Director

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

One Equal Heart Foundation's Form 990, Form 1023, Bylaws, Conflict of Interest Policy, and Financial Statements are all available upon request at the office. In addition, the form 990 is available on public websites including candid.org

IRS990/Desc0Advancing gender equity and rights of women: The Project "Indigenous Women Leaders Advance Citizenship Rights in their Municipalities" works with 25 Tseltal and Tsotsil women leaders from the municipalities of Pantheló, Cancuc, Santiago el Pinar, Mitontic and Tenejapa to advance their citizenship rights in their municipalities through collective actions and local initiatives. Women attend Leadership School to learn the knowledge and skills necessary to advance the citizenship rights of women. Attendees promote the rights to rest, education, recreation and political participation, by occupying public spaces. Project implemented by Colectivo Feminista Mercedes Olivera y Bustamante (COFEMO). The Project "Schools of Women's Rights and Other Masculinities for Indigenous Leaders" works with a group of 30 Indigenous men and a group of 30 Indigenous women who are leaders from human rights organizations. Indigenous men learn to modify patriarchal and sexist practices to increase equity and improve gender relationships at home and in their communities. Indigenous women gain confidence to assert their rights and to make decisions that improve wellbeing and advance equity. Project implemented by Voces Mesoamericanas, Acción con Pueblos Migrantes.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Growing Food & Building Economies: The Project "Tseltal Women Grow Food, Incomes and Gender Equity" works with 140 Tseltal women, from 10 different communities to reduce inequality between Indigenous women and men and increase the wellbeing of their families. They produce diverse and nutritious food, earn money selling crop surpluses in local markets, and through project activities, they also improve their self-esteem, increase awareness of gender equity, and participate more actively in making decisions in their communities. Project implemented by the Centro de Formación Integral para Promotores Indígenas (CEFIPI). The project "Walking towards food sovereignty and socio-economic autonomy" works with 40 Tsotsil families in Bachen and Suytic, two communities from the poorest region in Chiapas, to improve their health and basic living conditions, towards food autonomy and development. Families build rainwater catchment systems near their homes to drink, bathe, cook, wash dishes, grow vegetables and raise chickens. Women produce diverse food in their vegetable gardens and learn how to prepare more nutritious food. Project implemented by Centro de investigación y Servicios Profesionales (CISERP).
