North America (including Canada and Mexico, but not the United States)GrantmakingDEFEMI (now MILPA) works to eliminate violence against women and children by training and empowering indigenous women as community leaders, healers, and advocates. By making women more visible, more represented in leadership, and more connected to one another, this program strengthens their collective voice to advocate against violence and build a culture of respect. Growing Food & Building Economies focuses on building sustainable food systems. Community-led training teaches indigenous women, men and youth to increase food independence by farming more sustainably, marketing crop surpluses locally, and managing earnings for family expenses and community projects. SIET increases access to information in the Tseltal language through the community library and radio and develops culturally appropriate participatory evaluation tools. These strategies encourage fuller participation in community-led development and provide tools for indigenous leaders to monitor and evaluate their own work.00$156,679

IRS990/Desc0Advancing Human Rights: In 2018, after two years of intensively training human rights promoters as part of the pilot phase of DEFEMI (The Advocacy Project for Women and Children), our partners started the implementation of the MILPA project (Indigenous Women for Leadership, Participation and Action). MILPA responds comprehensively to the problem of violence against women and children by training and empowering indigenous women as leaders, healers and advocates within their communities. By making women more visible, more represented in leadership positions and more connected to one another, this project strengths their collective voice and positions them to advocate against violence and build a culture of respect for human rights.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Growing Food & Building Economies: Our work on food and economies focuses on ensuring a sustainable food system, which is the foundation of healthy families and communities. Our community-led training teaches indigenous women, men and youth how to increase their food independence by farming more sustainably, marketing crop surpluses locally and managing their earnings to cover family expenses and start-up costs for community projects. In 2018, two of One Equal Heart's organizational partners in Mexico worked to implement this project: Cooperación Comunitaria, a new organizational partner, facilitated an exchange of knowledge between indigenous Tseltal from Chiapas who serve their communities as agroecology promoters, and Me'phaa leaders from Guerrero who have experience building ecologically, and also provided training to indigenous agroecology promoters to adapt traditional techniques to build community spaces that are more resilient to climate change and seismic events. Following this exchange and training, a group of 18 agroecology promoters will construct a community store where they plan to sell their products and supplies to neighboring communities with the goal of generating funds to support other ecological projects. The second part of the project, in collaboration with our longstanding partner Centro de Apoyo Educativo a la Comunidad (CAEC), focused on applying agroecological strategies in a four community projects, including vegetable gardens, fishponds and a greenhouse. Their goal next year will be to deploy agroecology promoters to communities prioritized by need to teach families how to apply ecological farming practices on their homesteads and in other community projects.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Strengthening Language & Culture: Strengthening language, culture and knowledge is vital to sustainable development. Tseltal is considered a threatened language and, like over half the languages in the world, is at risk of extinction in one generation. The Radio Project increases access to trustworthy information on relevant topics and educational programs in the Tseltal language for a listening audience of 40,000 people, through 24-hour broadcasting. As part of the Project, 40 new radio volunteers from the communities are being trained in the use of equipment and communications techniques. These new radio volunteers, who are primarily Tseltal youth, will work with the staff of the radio to makes 65 visits to communities to gather local news, testimonies about traditions and legends, and produce broadcasts about women's rights, ecological farming, indigenous governance, child nutrition and family health.

IRS990ScheduleF/AccountActivitiesOutsideUSGrp/SpecificServicesProvidedTxt0DEFEMI (now MILPA) works to eliminate violence against women and children by training and empowering indigenous women as community leaders, healers, and advocates. These strategies encourage fuller participation in community-led development and provide tools for indigenous leaders to monitor and evaluate their own work.

IRS990ScheduleF/GrantsToOrgOutsideUSGrp/PurposeOfGrantTxt0The DEFEMI Advocacy Program works to eliminate violence against women and children and to build a culture of respect for human rights. When women can count on safe spaces to participate actively in decision-making and development efforts, families are healthier, more children go to school, productivity increases and incomes rise... Through the Together We Grow Stronger Program, indigenous women and families learn to farm sustainably, increasing their food independence. They sell surplus produce in local markets and leverage earnings to start kitchen businesses and save for emergencies through savings and credit cooperatives... The SIET Program increases access to educational materials in the Tseltal language through the community library and radio, encouraging fuller participation of women and families in the development process. Tseltal is considered a threatened language, and like over half the languages in the world, is at risk of extinction in one generation.
