North America (including Canada and Mexico, but not the United States)GrantmakingFEMI (now MILPA) works to eliminate violence against women and children by training and empowering indigenous women as community leaders, healers, and advocates. By making women more visible, more represented in leadership, and more connected to one another, this program strengthens their collective voice to advocate against violence and build a culture of respect. Growing Food & Building Economies focuses on building sustainable food systems. Community-led training teaches indigenous women, men and youth to increase food independence by farming more sustainably, marketing crop surpluses locally, and managing earnings for family expenses and community projects. SIET increases access to information in the Tseltal language through the community library and radio and develops culturally appropriate participatory evaluation tools. These strategies encourage fuller participation in community-led development and provide tools for indigenous leaders to monitor and evaluate their own work.00$42,058

Investment in capacity-building: In August 2017 One Equal Heart took a significant step toward increasing its organizational capacity and ensuring its long-term sustainability by hiring its first full-time staff member. This position began as an Assistant to the Executive Director and has since evolved into the Development & Programs Manager, becoming critical to the organization's fundraising and programmatic capacity.

IRS990/Desc0Advancing Human Rights: In 2017, we completed the pilot phase of DEFEMI (The Advocacy Project for Women and Children). After two years of intensively training human rights promoters and learning important lessons about where to focus our resources, we and our partners decided to restructure the program for greater impact moving forward. In December 2017, the Board of Directors approved a limited grant to cover salaries and other expenses during this transitional phase. The new project, which officially began in April 2018 with full funding from the Board, is called MILPA (Indigenous Women for Leadership, Participation and Action). MILPA will respond comprehensively to the problem of violence against women and children by training and empowering indigenous women as leaders, healers and advocates within their communities. By making women are more visible, more represented in leadership positions and more connected to one another, this project will strengthen their collective voice and position them to advocate against violence and build a culture of respect for human rights.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Growing Food & Building Economies: Our work on food and economies focuses on ensuring a sustainable food system, which is the foundation of healthy families and communities. Our community-led training teaches indigenous women, men and youth how to increase their food independence by farming more sustainably, marketing crop surpluses locally and managing their earnings to cover family expenses and start-up costs for community projects. This project grew significantly in 2017, with over 200 students participating in an agroecology certificate program in 10 village training centers. In response to this growth, the Board of Directors awarded a limited grant at the end of 2017 to cover salaries and other expenses in the first quarter of 2018 to give us time to re-structure the program to better handle increased demand. The new program (which was approved by the Board in April 2018) will be two-fold: with a new organizational partner, Cooperación Comunitaria, we will provide training to indigenous agroecology promoters to build permanent learning spaces in the 10 village agroecology centers. These constructions will use local materials and traditional techniques adapted for greater climate resilience and habilitability, and will ensure that village training centers have the resources agroecology students need to be successful. The second part of the project, which is in collaboration with our longstanding partner Centro de Apoyo Educativo a la Comunidad (CAEC), will focus on training more teacher-facilitators so they can in turn train more community members in ecological farming practices.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Strengthening Language & Culture: Strengthening language, culture and knowledge is vital to sustainable development. Tseltal is considered a threatened language and, like over half the languages in the world, is at risk of extinction in one generation. The SIET Program increases access to information and educational materials in the Tseltal language through the community library and radio and develops culturally appropriate participatory evaluation tools like photohistories. Together, these strategies encourage fuller participation in community-led development-especially among women-and provide tools for indigenous leaders to monitor and evaluate their own work.

IRS990ScheduleF/AccountActivitiesOutsideUSGrp/SpecificServicesProvidedTxt0FEMI (now MILPA) works to eliminate violence against women and children by training and empowering indigenous women as community leaders, healers, and advocates. By making women more visible, more represented in leadership, and more connected to one another, this program strengthens their collective voice to advocate against violence and build a culture of respect. Growing Food & Building Economies focuses on building sustainable food systems. IRS990ScheduleF/GrantsToOrgOutsideUSGrp/PurposeOfGrantTxt0The DEFEMI Advocacy Program works to eliminate violence against women and children and to build a culture of respect for human rights. When women can count on safe spaces to participate actively in decision-making and development efforts, families are healthier, more children go to school, productivity increases and incomes rise... Through the Together We Grow Stronger Program, indigenous women and families learn to farm sustainably, increasing their food independence. They sell surplus produce in local markets and leverage earnings to start kitchen businesses and save for emergencies through savings and credit cooperatives... The SIET Program increases access to educational materials in the Tseltal language through the community library and radio, encouraging fuller participation of women and families in the development process.
