“The academy museum consists of the renovated landmark saban building and a new, attached spherical addition that includes, among other things, the 952-seat david geffen theater and the dolby family terrace overlooking the hollywood hills. The academy museum features six stories of immersive exhibition galleries, a state-of-the-art educational studio, film theaters and dynamic public and special event spaces. One of the key missions of the academy museum foundation is to manage and operate the facility. This category of expense also reflects financing and depreciation expense of the capitalized costs of constructing the museum's physical facilities.”
“The academy museum is the largest institution in the united states devoted to the arts, sciences, and artists of moviemaking. In its second year of operation, the academy museum had robust ticket sales, presented a wide variety of film screenings, and hosted numerous education and public programs, many of which featured notable film artists. The museum serves a diverse general population of local los angeles county residents, including students and teachers on k-12 school tours; national and international visitors to los angeles; and business and convention visitors. As part of its community commitment, the museum's ground floor is open free to the public. It includes the sidney poitier grand lobby and spielberg family gallery, housing an immersive multichannel media installation that travels from the very beginnings of cinema to the films of today. Discounted admission is provided to students and seniors, with free admission offered to california ebt cardholders and their families. Free museum admission for visitors 17 years of age and younger is provided in perpetuity through an endowment in honor of sid ganis, a former academy president and an honorary trustee of the museum. The academy museum store had lively traffic on site and online, offering merchandise designed and produced by academy members and los angeles- and california-based artists and designers as well as products connecting store audiences to the museum's exhibitions and the history of the academy of motion picture arts and sciences and the oscars.”
“As part of its mission, the academy museum foundation engages in an active program of collection care and conservation of film-related objects. The academy museum's los angeles facility includes a conservation lab as well as a photography studio for the documentation of objects. In addition, the academy museum maintains climate-controlled, highly secure facilities for the storage of its collection. In fy23, the museum's conservation team undertook research and analysis in support of groundbreaking work including: (i) restoration of a maquette of ursula from the little mermaid, which required research on the adhesion properties of the object's clay, leading to promising results that have already been applied to other treatments and could lead to the dissemination of valuable treatment techniques for the international conservation community and (ii) conservation treatment of the academy museum's plaster lifecast of al pacino from the godfather and two plaster jowl molds for marlon brando from the same film, requiring careful repair of plaster with losses filled and toned, making the items stable and safer to handle and mount for exhibition. The academy museum's curatorial staff researches the objects in the museum's possession, plans exhibitions for public viewing, and prepares and publishes scholarly publications and texts. The academy museum presented five exhibitions in its galleries: (i) stories of cinema (ongoing) is the academy museum's core exhibition, spanning three levels of the museum, numerous galleries, and presenting the diverse, international, and complex stories of moviemakers and the works they create; (ii) the path to cinema: highlights from the richard balzer collection exploring how the cinematic experience that moviegoers know today evolved from a long tradition of optical amusements and devices of wonders; (iii) backdrop: an invisible art otlighting a monumental backdrop, the iconic mt. Rushmore backing from alfred hitchcock's north by northwest; and (iv) regeneration: black cinema 1898-1971, a landmark exhibiton exploring the visual culture of black cinema in its manifold expressions from cinema's dawn into the early '70s; and (v) baltimore, sir isaac julien's homage to writer-director-producer mario van peebles in its single-channel theatrical version, along with lessons of the hour, julien's single-channel portrait of the key black american orator frederick douglass. The academy museum also presented the oscars experience (ongoing), an immersive simulation in which museum visitors can receive an oscar and a video to document the experience. The academy museum's publishing imprint produced a catalogue for its temporary exhibition regeneration: black cinema 1898-1971, which was the winner of the association of art curators (aamc) award for excellence, as well as two other catalogues, spike lee: director's inspiration and pedro almodovar: installation/instalacion, the museum's first bilingual publication. All the publications are co-published with delmonico books and distributed worldwide by d.a.p. Artbook. The museum also launched the second season of the academy museum podcast hosted by director and president jacqueline stewart.”
“The academy museum's education, film programming, and public engagement programs create safe and inclusive learning opportunities for local, national, and international learners of all abilities. This programming includes a robust schedule of screenings, discussions, and public programs including in-gallery programs, virtual programs, school tours, symposia, panels, book signings, and more. The academy museum has served los angeles-area title 1 high schools at no cost to them and offers to underwrite bus costs for these visits. The number of school tours is expected to increase over the coming months and years. The museum's free drop-in teen program invites local teens to join museum educators on the third friday of every month to be inspired by the museum's exhibitions and screenings, explore the museum, socialize, and be creative. On the first three saturdays of every month, academy museum educators host family days drop-in workshop activities designed for families with children ages 2 and up and are free with museum admission. These workshops allow families to engage in artmaking, experimenting with moviemaking equipment, and learning various elements of filmmaking. Monthly calm mornings provide accessible experiences designed for all visitors, including those who are neurodivergent, wheelchair users, blind, low-vision, deaf, and hard of hearing to engage with the museum. Regular visitor tours include drop-in gallery programs, as well as consistenty scheduled and promoted american sign language (asl) interpreted tours and visual description tours of film clips and exhibition objects. In october 2022, the academy museum launched its first fully realized k-12 education program in support of regeneration, which included a digitally published, free, national standards-based high school curriculum on american history, english, social studies, and film studies. This curriculum aligns with the california common core curriculum standards. In february 2023, the academy museum hosted the regeneration summit, a weekend-long festival honoring the regeneration exhibition. Encompassing interactive pop-up activations, live entertainment, intimate workshops, dynamic film screenings, los angeles community partner presence, and captivating talks, the summit engaged audiences of all ages and offered numerous opportunities to celebrate the rich history of black cinema. The academy museum's film programs highlight the rich diversity of national and international film culture with screenings and in-person q&a's inside the 277-seat ted mann theater and the 952-seat david geffen theater. Screenings in fy23 included the following popular ongoing series: family matinees, oscar sundays, and branch selects. Limited series presented in fy23 inlcluded: summer of love; doris day; mexico maleficarum: resurrecting 20th century mexican horror cinema; korean horror; hollywood chinese; present past; 3d-cember!; dede allen; agnes varda; gloria grahame; satyajit ray; hollywood ten; almodovar muses; lourdes portillo, sammo hung; korean women directors and summer of music. Programming in fy23 also included the following standalone screenings: the last unicorn, the wiz with live dance performances from the debbie allen dance studio, and jaws in 3d. Community-centered engagements are integral to the academy museum's mission. In its second year, the museum connected with more than 60 los angeles-based community organizations in addition to county supervisorial districts and city council offices. In addition to providing free admission to all visitors who are ages 17 and under, the museum works in active partnership with community organizations to ensure access to the widest array of los angeles residents, and the museum's free community days welcomed communities historically excluded from museum settings and art institutions and attracted more than 2,500 guests.”
