Mission

The academy museum of motion pictures advances the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from los angeles and around the world, the museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

To serve as a supporting organization of the academy foundation. Its primary purpose is to own and operate a museum dedicated to the arts and sciences of motion pictures.

Academy museum foundation made significant changes to its by-laws since the prior form 990 was filed. The changes include the following: - the museum board is now comprised of a maximum of 35 elected and ex officio voting members. - term limits for elected trustees were clarified to indicate that for a newly elected trustee filing a seat after july 1, the term limited does not include the period from when the trustee began service to the following june 30. - the museum leader is defined as the director and president. - the director/president reports to the museum board and the academy foundation ceo. - the director/president's responsibilities were clarified. Description of collection of art, historical treasures or other similar assets: the academy collections consist of the holdings of the academy museum, the margaret herrick library and the academy film archive the holdings consist of significant three dimensional motion picture objects, documents, photographs and motion pictures. The holdings are made available to students and scholars for motion picture industry and art form research and will be available to the academy museum when opened. These collections are donated to, preserved and maintained by the foundation, and are carried at no value on the consolidated statements of financial position.

Description of the organization's collections: the museum maintains a collection of over 1,500 three-dimensional artifacts associated with filmmaking history as well as with the academy itself. This includes film production materials (props, set, costumes, make-up, models, paintings, equipment, furniture, signage, etc.), marketing and promotional pieces, academy-related objects and personal items of historic value. Priority is given to items with high exhibit value and that can be properly stored and conserved by the academy in perpetuity.
