Form 990, Part III, Line 4A Detail

The academy museum's los angeles facility includes a conservation lab as well as a photography studio for the documentation of objects. In addition, the academy museum maintains climate-controlled, highly secure facilities for the storage of its collection. In fy22, the museum's conservation team undertook research and analysis in support of groundbreaking work including: (i) the treatment of the dark crystal creature gourmand skeksis, including the analysis of contemporary materials, particularly foam, executing innovative techniques using a nebulizer for consolidation of foam materials; (ii) conservation of the museum's bela lugosi dracula cape to stabilize its silk crepe lining, which had significant tearing due to the differential shrinkage and expansion between the black wool and the silk from being in an uncontrolled environment; and (iii) multiple treatments were performed on the academy museum's pre-cinematic collection of zoetropes, praxinoscope theatres and other items, including reducing and passivating iron oxidation to halt rust and the erosion of surface paint layers, applying new wax coating for protection, and stabilizing broken metal hinges and parts to make them stable for display and prolong their lifespan. The academy museum's curatorial staff researches the objects in the museum's possession, plans exhibitions for public viewing, and prepares and publishes scholarly publications and texts. The academy museum presented five exhibitions in its galleries when the museum opened to the public on september 30, 2021: (i) stories of cinema (ongoing) is the academy museum's core exhibition, spanning three levels of the museum, numerous galleries, and presenting the diverse, international, and complex stories of moviemakers and the works they create; (ii) the path to cinema: highlights from the richard balzer collection (ongoing) exploring how the cinematic experience that moviegoers know today evolved from a long tradition of optical amusements and devices of wonders; (iii) backdrop: an invisible art (ongoing) spotlighting a monumental backdrop, the iconic mt. Rushmore backing from alfred hitchcock's north by northwest; (iv) hayao miyazaki, on view from september 30, 2021 through june 2022 and marking the first north american retrospective dedicated to the work of the internationally celebrated artist and filmmaker and featured approximately 400 objects, including original imageboards, character designs, storyboard layouts, backgrounds, posters, and cels; and (v) the pixar toy story 3d zoetrope, on view from september 30, 2021 through june 2022, and presenting the giant zoetrope created by the team at pixar and featuring characters from the film toy story. The academy museum also presented the oscars experience (ongoing), an immersive simulation in which museum visitors can receive an oscar and a video to document the experience. The academy museum also launched a publishing imprint and debuted two catalogues for its temporary exhibition hayao miyazaki as well as the gallery exhibition director's inspiration: spike lee. All the publications are co-published with delmonico books and distributed worldwide by d.a.p. Artbook. The museum also launched the first season of the academy museum podcast hosted by director and president jacqueline stewart.
