We believe that better awareness and understanding of nature's value will drive better decisions and effect more robust and sustainable systemic change. Domestic programs provide three services: education & awareness bldg, place-based analysis of projects & policies, and development of funding mechanisms to sustain long-term successes. In 2016, staff built awareness of natural capital by participating in more than 22 conferences and workshops nationwide, incl. a rare opportunity to engage the Governmental Accounting Standards Board in a workshop exploring opportunities to improve natural capital accounting and accelerate the adoption of green infrastructure. In 2016, we conducted place-based ecosystem service and benefit-cost analysis projects with over 20 large and small partners throughout the nation. For example, in Louisiana, we conducted a first-of-its-kind socioeconomic study of planned sediment diversions on the Mississippi River. In Tucson, we supported the local community by conducting an ecosystem services valuation of an important local watershed, Sabino Creek, and helping to inform important policy options. In Alaska, our analysis supported a successful bond measure that allocates funds to local trails and parks. |
