IRS990/Desc0DOMESTIC: Earth Economics staff attended and presented at over 60 conferences across the United States. Below is a brief summary of seven projects or activites conducted in the States of Washington, California, Louisiana, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin and others.Ecosystem Service Valuation of Central Puget Sound, WA: conducted an economic assessment of the value of nature's services provided to communities throughout Central Puget Sound, collaborating with the Regional Open Space Strategy and other experts and community leaders from the University of WA, The Nature Conservancy, Puget Sound Partnership, and local governments. This effort helped develop a conservation strategy for the region, highlighting uniquely valuable regions in Puget Sound along with restoration opportunities that enhance ecological conditions and contribute to long-term economic stability. Produced report which highlighted this ecological value and provided recommendation for use of the information. U.S. Housing and Urban Development Natural Disaster Resiliency Competition (NDRC): participated as Subject Matter Experts to present sessions to NDRC applicants, 40 jurisdictions/approx. 220 individuals, on cutting-edge techniques and data sources for estimating benefits and costs. Then provided ongoing support to applicants needing assistance on the application of the benefit-cost analysis (BCA). Earth Economics worked directly with the State of CA, the LA Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority, and the City of New Orleans to conduct BCAs for each project in the application. Measuring Ecosystem Services of Drought, Wildfire, and Flooding Mitigation Activities: collaborated with consulting, engineering, construction & operations firm to derive ecosystem service values for FEMA's current natural disaster mitigation activities. This effort would allow FEMA to better and more accurately implement mitigation activities to protect people and infrastructure from future natural disaster, as well as make the economic case for cost-effective projects. This information was submitted to FEMA and has yet to be implemented. WA Outer Coast Shoreline Management Project : focused on continued outreach to both Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties. Participated in the coordination of a science forum, where shoreline experts in the area explained the importance of maintaining healthy natural systems, especially when facing climate related changes. We also met with all three County Commissioners from each county to demonstrate our results and ways our work could be implemented. Urban Drainage and Flood Control, Denver, CO: worked with the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD) and local Engineering firm to help prepare elements of a preliminary design of alternatives selected by the UDFCD and projects sponsors. Using innovative economic methodologies, put together value tables of ecosystem services produced by green areas, to be included in the Benefit Cost Analysis. This valuation will help interested parties determine better investments while still maintaining best management practices and resilient building. St. Louis River Watershed Valuation Analysis, northeastern MN: worked with a local native community to complete a valuation analysis of the St. Louis River watershed, which was named one of the top 10 endangered rivers in the US in 2015 by American Rivers. This work reviews critical threats to the health of the watershed, historical changes to land cover in the watershed, and provides economic arguments which show the benefits people gain from the natural areas of the watershed. Other outputs from this work included a local workshop in which over 50 experts in the natural resources and sciences in the area attended. Calculating Environmental Benefits in Flood and Stormwater Mitigation Studies, southern WI: Our work evaluated the effect of calculating environmental benefits in two flood and stormwater mitigation case studies in Wisconsin, the first, a partial

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0INTERNATIONAL : In 2015, Earth Economics staff attended and presented at international conferences in Italy, Israel, Portugal, Chile, South Africa, England, Ireland, and Jamaica.Calculating the Environmental Benefits Provided by Jesus Maria Watershed, Costa Rica: Our work calculated the environmental benefits provided by the most populated watershed in Costa Rica, the Jesus Maria watershed, which includes benefits to the capital city, San Jose. The results were used by the oldest environmental non-profit in Costa Rica to look at the effects of soil degradation and options assessment incentives and market mechanisms to restore critical ecosystems. The Jesus Maria watershed spans 37,725 hectares and has a population of 16,875 people who depend directly on natural resources for their livelihoods.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0ECOSYSTEM VALUATION TOOLKIT: The Ecosystem Valuation Toolkit (EVT) supported increasingly complex valuation work for many of our domestic projects, including our work with FEMA, the NDRC (particularly with Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority), the City of Tucson, Central Arkansas Water, several engineering firms, and many other clients. This year we launched new features that further increased the efficiency of our work, with particular tasks that once took approximately 40 hours now able to be completed in just 20 minutes, allowing for more robust outputs. The capabilities of the EVT also attracted new project partners to collaborate in support of Earth Economics' mission, most notably including the Delta Institute and Farmland LP who began partnering with us on a USDA National Resources Conservation Service Conservation Innovation Grant which will integrate sustainable agriculture data into the EVT.
