Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To advance a resilient agriculture system that demonstrates the power to heal our lands, nourish our communities and prepare emerging farmers.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Our media justice program works to address issues of equity and access in today's increasingly corporate-dominated media and communication systems. We do that by developing the capacity of community partners to create and shape their own media, and by working to expand access to media - on a local and national level. In 2012 our program accomplished the following:-co-facilitated and supported the phillips neighborhood mural project (with waite house and hope community); mentored four youth participants in media production and communication strategies, including arranging for them to be interviewed on air by the youth new initiative at kfai community radio.-co-sponsored and facilitated one-day workshop with community action against racism (c.a.a.r.) called "racism in the media: a community conversation."-co-hosted a "gathering for media justice" with 70 attendees and represenation from 19 community organizations and local independent media outlets. The group adopted a pledge for equity in local media drafted by main street project, calling for inclusive and accurate journalism.-facilitated local efforts to engage in both the state and national prison phone justice campaign. -partnered with the community justice project at st. Thomas university law school. -with community justice project, participated in the washington, d.c. Strong families, safe communities rally and press conference where fcc commissioner mignon clyburn announced that the fcc would act on the wright petition. -with community justice project, met with minnesota public utility commissioner to explore potential for changing minnesota's prison phone contracts. -shared action alerts and media coverage of campaign through social media networks and newsletters.-program director, danielle mkali co-created and taught a minneapolis community and technical college course entitled "politics, media and organizing with indigenous perspectives and applications." mctc plans to offer the course again. -organized and facilitated the twin cities community radio collaboration and others interested in the community radio opportunity. -organized a 10-person delegation to attend the 2012 grassroots radio conference in urbana/champaign, il -hosted and facilitated community podcast production trainings in september, october and april -led a media justice workshop for mujeres en liderazgo (women in leadership) connected to their interest in community radio. -facilitated community planning meetings and outreach in phillips and frogtown neighborhoods, building capacity in key organizations in each neighborhood -co-led a community radio workshop at the 2012 national alliance for media arts and culture (namac): "art on air."
Activity 3
Msp works to increase civic participation by under-represented communities. We do this by collaboratively producing language-accessible and culturally compatible civic education resources, and distributing and organizing through a broad network of community-based partners. In 2012, msp produced and distributed 25,000 copies of a 4 language (hmong, somali, spanish, english) non-partisan guide to minnesota elections. The guides contained easy to use information about eligibility, registration and voting. The guides were distributed by over forty community-based partner organizations in the following minnesota communities: minneapolis, st. Paul, brooklyn park, rochester, northfield, willmar, winona, and moorhead.

IRS990/Description0MAIN STREET PROJECT'S SUSTAINABLE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE PROGRAM WORKS TO REDUCE RURAL POVERTY, IMPROVE PUBLIC HEALTH, REDUCE THE ECOLOGICAL DAMAGE FROM AGRICULTURE, AND DIMINISH THE WORST EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH THE WIDE-SCALE ADOPTION OF A SYSTEM OF SUSTAINABLE, ENTREPRENEURIAL AGRICULTURE THAT PROMOTES EQUITABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, PROVIDES ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW FARMERS- MANY OF WHOM ARE IMMIGRANTS- AND GIVES RURAL RESIDENTS ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, HIGH QUALITY, LOCALLY-GROWN FOOD.IN 2012 OUR PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHED THE FOLLOWING:-CONDUCTED TWO ADDITIONAL SPANISH-LANGUAGE AGRIPRENEUR TRAINING SESSIONS FOR 14 PARTICIPANTS; MADE ADJUSTMENTS TO CURRICULUM FOLLOWING EACH SESSION BASED ON PARTICIPANT FEEDBACK AND TRAINER EXPERIENCE. -BECAUSE NATURAL FREE-RANGE POULTRY PRODUCTION IS ONE COMPONENT OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM, THE LAST TRAINING CLASS INCLUDED AN INTRODUCTION TO PRODUCTION OF THREE SPECIFIC CROPS THAT THRIVE IN COLD CLIMATE CONDITIONS, ARE PART OF THE ETHNIC FOOD TRADITIONS OF THE LATINO COMMUNITY, AND CAN UTILIZE POULTRY MANURE AS FERTILIZER: GARLIC AND ONIONS, DRY EDIBLE BEANS (PINTO AND BLACK), AND SMALL SHORT SEASON GRAINS.-BUILT FOUR BUSINESS INCUBATOR SITES FOR TRAINING GRADUATES. THREE INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATED IN 6 AND 12-MONTH CYCLES. THE EXPERIENCE HAS ALLOWED THE PRODUCERS TO RAISE SEVERAL FLOCKS AND TO LEARN HOW TO ADDRESS CHALLENGES THAT POULTRY PRODUCTION CAN PRESENT.-ASSISTED TRAINEES BY SECURING A MARKET TO THE LOCAL COLLEGES THROUGH BON APPETIT, AND SET UP SEVERAL DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER DROP SITES. THIS ALLOWED PARTICIPANTS TO INITIALLY FOCUS ON PRODUCTION SKILLS - AND ALLOWED US TO BEGIN BUILDING MARKET DEMAND FOR 'MAIN STREET FARMERS' PRODUCTS. COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE DEMONSTRATING THEIR SUPPORT FOR NEW FARMERS IN THE PROGRAM BY PURCHASING THEIR PRODUCTS.-PROGRAM DIRECTOR REGINALDO HASLETT-MARROQUIN TESTIFIED BEFORE THE MINNESOTA SENATE AGRICULTURE AND ECONOMICS COMMITTE IN 2012 ABOUT THE NEED FOR BROADER MICROLOAN ACCESS FOR IMMIGRANT AND MINORITY FARMERS - AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP IN REMOVING STRUCTURAL BARRIERS TO DIVERSE PARTICIPATION IN MINNESOTA'S FOOD AND AGRICULTURE SYSTEM.-CO-FACILITATED A SERIES OF CONVERSATIONS WITH PAST AND CURRENT TRAINING PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES AS PART OF AN EFFORT TO DEVELOP INDICATORS OF SUCCESS. TOPICS INCLUDED CHALLENGES THEY FACE IN THEIR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES RELATED TO JOBS, INCOME, HEALTH, EDUCATION, LANGUAGE, AND CULTURAL DIFFERENCES - ESPECIALLY AS THEY AFFECTED THEIR CHILDREN. THEY ALSO DISCUSSED THEIR MOTIVATIONS AND HOPES FOR WANTING TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY AS FARMERS. TOP PRIORITIES WERE HAVING ACCESS TO HEALTHY FOOD AND HAVING MORE FAMILY TIME. -STRENGTHENED COLLABORATION EFFORTS WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE, INCLUSIVE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE SYSTEM - INCLUDING ST. OLAF AND CARLETON COLLEGES, THE SOUTHERN MINNESOTA INITIATIVE FOUNDATION, THE CANNON RIVER WATERSHED PARTNERSHIP, AGSTAR FINANCIAL SERVICES, AND THE SOUTHERN MINNESOTA SUSTAINABLE REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP. THE FOCUS OF THESE COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS IS EXPANDING THE SYSTEM AND NUMBER OF PRODUCERS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE PROFITABILITY FOR PARTICIPANTS/NEW FARMERS-AND TO LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR AN INCLUSIVE REGIONAL FOOD HUB.
