Jason taylor reading room

Part VIII Line 2F

In conjunction with each of the past seven school years, the Jason Taylor

Part VIII Line 2F

Foundation has held classes for the Jason Taylor Reading Room.

Part VIII Line 2F

Located at the Miramar Youth Enrichment Center, the Jason Taylor Reading Room

Part VIII Line 2F

is a comprehensive after-school program designed to address academic

Part VIII Line 2F

challenges among inner-city youth, particularly in the areas of literacy.

Part VIII Line 2F

Middle school and high school students participate in the program for two

Part VIII Line 2F

hours per day throughout the school year, and are navigated through a

Part VIII Line 2F

rotating academic focus calendar with assistance from a full-time Educational

Part VIII Line 2F

Director, certified teachers and teachers' aids. The program's curriculum

Part VIII Line 2F

addresses vocabulary development, reading comprehension, language arts, creative

Part VIII Line 2F

writing skills, oral reading fluency and novel study, as well as ninety minutes

Part VIII Line 2F

of weekly math instruction per grade level. The Reading Room also provides

Part VIII Line 2F

individualized computer assisted learning opportunities and homework support. 2013 also

Part VIII Line 2F

marked the fourth year of the Reading Room's full-time case manager, who monitors

Part VIII Line 2F

and tracks students academic performance, attendance and behavior, as well as serves

Part VIII Line 2F

as a liaison between the program, the students' schools and their

Part VIII Line 2F

parents. In an effort to provide a creative outlet, the Reading Room allows students to

Part VIII Line 2F

utilize critical literacy skills as a vehicle for self expression,

Part VIII Line 2F

both written and through performance, with the Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Corner,

Part VIII Line 2F

a spoken word poetry component held each Friday. Through the Jason Taylor Foundation's

Part VIII Line 2F

continuing partnerships with other community-based organizations,

Part VIII Line 2F

additional extra curricular activities are made available to Reading Room students

Part VIII Line 2F

including cooking and nutritional classes, mentoring programs, field days and more.

Part VIII Line 2F

The ronnie brown project "23 ways to stop youth violence"

Part VIII Line 2F

This anti-violence campaign aimed at middle school and high school students

Part VIII Line 2F

was designed by former Miami Dolphins Running Back Ronnie Brown to

Part VIII Line 2F

create heightened awareness of the epidemic of violence and bullying

Part VIII Line 2F

today's young people are experiencing, and to discuss practical solutions

Part VIII Line 2F

to managing the actions and emotions that often lead to violent acts.

Part VIII Line 2F

Donors who provided funding for this program underwrote the costs of

Part VIII Line 2F

guest speakers, licensing and rights fees for Teen Truth Live's

Part VIII Line 2F

award-winning documentary, a program curriculum provided to each school,

Part VIII Line 2F

supporting collateral materials, etc.

Part VIII Line 2F

F IS FOR FOOTBALL

Part VIII Line 2F

In October, 2013, the Jason Taylor Foundation partnered

Part VIII Line 2F

with Mascot Books, children's author, Julie Kicklighter, and Broward County

Part VIII Line 2F

Public Schools on a literacy based community partnership.

Part VIII Line 2F

The Jason Taylor Foundation donated 1,000 copies of Kicklighter's

Part VIII Line 2F

F is for Football book to Broward Elementary Schools, ensuring that every

Part VIII Line 2F

public school in the nation's sixth largest school district had

Part VIII Line 2F

at least one copy of the book in its media center. In addition, 15 schools

Part VIII Line 2F

from across the district were selected to participate in a live

Part VIII Line 2F

book read with Kicklighter utilizing the school board's distance learning

Part VIII Line 2F

video technology. Not only did this technology allow students to engage

Part VIII Line 2F

with the book's author, but it also provided a unique learning experience

Part VIII Line 2F

as they were able to share with their peers countywide.

Part VIII Line 2F

PLAY IT FORWARD

Part VIII Line 2F

During the 2013 holiday season, the Jason Taylor Foundation partnered

Part VIII Line 2F

with toy manufacturer and distributor, Jazwares, to create the Play it Forward initiative.

Part VIII Line 2F

Together, JTF and Jazwares distributed 10,000 toys to children across

Part VIII Line 2F

South Florida. More than 20 organizations received toys for the youth they service,

Part VIII Line 2F

including hospitals, after school programs, recreational centers,

Part VIII Line 2F

foster care facilities and more. Additionally, the initiative inspired

Part VIII Line 2F

others in the corporate community to give during the holidays, as they lent

Part VIII Line 2F

their services to the Jason Taylor Foundation to help store,

Part VIII Line 2F

transport and distribute the toys.

Part VIII Line 2F

TECH PACKS

Part VIII Line 2F

In 2013, the Jason Taylor Foundation partnered with DM Technology Solutions to

Part VIII Line 2F

provide support technological support to foster and adoptive children being served

Part VIII Line 2F

by Our Kids of Miami Dade/Monroe County. A total of 270 children were provided

Part VIII Line 2F

with technology packages that included laptops, printers, thumb drives and a

Part VIII Line 2F

Targus laptop backpack. The Jason Taylor Foundation ensured that each

Part VIII Line 2F

laptop was loaded with Microsoft software that included Windows 7,

Part VIII Line 2F

Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) as well as antivirus software.

CAMP KATINA

Part III Line 4D

In August 2013, Katina Taylor, Vice President and

Part III Line 4D

co-founder of the Jason Taylor Foundation, hosted "Camp Katina -

Part III Line 4D

Cartwheels to Character," a three day gymnastics, cheerleading and life skills

Part III Line 4D

program for girls ages 7-12. More than 50 underserved girls

Part III Line 4D

from Miami-Dade and Broward counties participated in the

Part III Line 4D

three-day camp at the West Broward Gymnastics Academy

Part III Line 4D

in Davie. Campers learned the fundamentals of gymnastics

Part III Line 4D

and cheerleading and heard from a panel of guest speakers made

Part III Line 4D

up of influential South Florida women who discussed topics

Part III Line 4D

including goal setting, healthy eating habits, physical fitness,

Part III Line 4D

etiquette, respect and appreciation for others, education

Part III Line 4D

and goal setting. The camp culminated with a visit from

Part III Line 4D

Katina's NFL All-Pro Husband, Jason Taylor and her brother,

Part III Line 4D

former NFL All-Pro Zach Thomas, who interacted with the kids,

Part III Line 4D

posed for photos and signed autographs for all in attendance.

Part III Line 4D

All campers received medals and certificates recognizing their participation and a

Part III Line 4D

select few were honored for their outstanding performance or

Part III Line 4D

attitudes, with one camper receiving a one-year scholarship to

Part III Line 4D

West Broward Gymnastics Academy.

Part III Line 4D

BACK TO SCHOOL BEST

Part III Line 4D

In an effort to help prepare South Florida youth for the 2013-14 school year,

Part III Line 4D

Katina Taylor developed the "Back to School Best" program to provide

Part III Line 4D

children with new haircuts at the AVEDA Institute. Katina's understanding

Part III Line 4D

of the value of having a positive body image as our youth embark on a

Part III Line 4D

new school year helped her to identify another opportunity to assist children

Part III Line 4D

with focusing on their studies and not their appearance while attending school. In 2013,

Part III Line 4D

the program provided 60 children with a full haircut service and a new backpack

Part III Line 4D

equipped with school supplies. In addition, Katina Taylor, as well

Part III Line 4D

as special guests including the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders, were on hand to

Part III Line 4D

interact with the children and their families, ensuring and uplifting back-to-school celebration.

Part III Line 4D

Jt's ping pong smash kids clinic

Part III Line 4D

In December 2013 the Jason Taylor Foundation held the

Part III Line 4D

sixth-annual JT's Ping Pong Smash Kids Clinic. Jason Taylor

Part III Line 4D

teamed up with former Puerto Rican Junior National Table Tennis

Part III Line 4D

Champion, Juan Ly to create the program, which preceded the

Part III Line 4D

Foundation's annual charity table-tennis fundraiser, to offer

Part III Line 4D

boys and girls of South Florida a free opportunity to learn a

Part III Line 4D

range of ping pong skills and strategies from a celebrated

Part III Line 4D

professional. Nearly 100 deserving children from several

Part III Line 4D

different youth organizations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward

Part III Line 4D

counties received 90 minutes of expert table-tennis instruction.

Part III Line 4D

No experience or ping pong background was required. Each child

Part III Line 4D

received an Publix backpack a Killerspin paddle and an invite

Part III Line 4D

to stick around and watch the 3Cinteractive JT Ping

Part III Line 4D

Pong Smash - Presented by Publix. During the tournament,

Part III Line 4D

kids watched celebrities compete against one another, obtained celebrity

Part III Line 4D

autographs, played video games, ate snacks and enjoyed interactive games.

Part III Line 4D

Omari hardwick bluapple poetry network

Part III Line 4D

The Omari Hardwick bluapple Poetry Network, is a multi-faceted,

Part III Line 4D

after-school spoken word poetry program available free

Part III Line 4D

to students actively attending Broward County public high schools

Part III Line 4D

and middle schools as a result of a collaboration between the

Part III Line 4D

Jason Taylor Foundation and the School Board of Broward County's Diversity,

Part III Line 4D

Cultural Outreach and Prevention Department. The program provides

Part III Line 4D

an environment for students to focus on literacy, prevention

Part III Line 4D

issues and social awareness as vehicles for self expression,

Part III Line 4D

both written and through performance, ultimately empowering

Part III Line 4D

young people, the schools they attend and the communities in which

Part III Line 4D

they live. In addition, by recognizing each poetry group as a

Part III Line 4D

member of the school district's overall network, rather than simply

Part III Line 4D

as an individual program, a greater sense of community is developed

Part III Line 4D

with ideas, creativity and understanding being shared across

Part III Line 4D

district boundaries. During the 2013-2014 school year more than 40

Part III Line 4D

in the Network, schools actively participated

Part III Line 4D

Founded by the Jason Taylor Foundation, along with actor

Part III Line 4D

and accomplished poet, Omari Hardwick, the bluapple Poetry

Part III Line 4D

Network is moderated by Darius Daughtry, who leads school instructors

Part III Line 4D

in workshops, both in person and on line, as he guides them through

Part III Line 4D

a curriculum he has tailored specifically for the students of

Part III Line 4D

Broward County given his experience serving as a teacher in the district.

Part III Line 4D

ALL COMMUNITY TEAM

Part III Line 4D

During the 2013 National Football League season, the Jason Taylor

Part III Line 4D

Foundation provided a unique experience for various youth groups each week

Part III Line 4D

the Miami Dolphins hosted a home game. Groups were given 20 tickets,

Part III Line 4D

parking passes and in-stadium beverages and snacks so that they could

Part III Line 4D

enjoy an NFL game in person and watch Jason Taylor, President and Founder

Part III Line 4D

of the Jason Taylor Foundation, perform on the field. For a majority

Part III Line 4D

of the children, this was their first time attending an NFL game.

Part III Line 4D

The experience was also used by various programs as an incentive

Part III Line 4D

for participating children to exhibit good behavior, a positive attitude

Part III Line 4D

and strong participation in school.

IRS990/Desc0JASON TAYLOR READING ROOM IN CONJUNCTION WITH EACH OF THE PAST SEVEN SCHOOL YEARS, THE JASON TAYLOR FOUNDATION HAS HELD CLASSES FOR THE JASON TAYLOR READING ROOM. LOCATED AT THE MIRAMAR YOUTH ENRICHMENT CENTER, THE JASON TAYLOR READING ROOM IS A MULTI-FACETED, AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO OFFER A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM OF ILLITERACY AMONG INNER-CITY YOUTH. MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM FOUR DAYS PER WEEK FOR TWO HOURS PER DAY, ASSISTED BY CERTIFIED TEACHERS AND FOCUSING ON READING COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES, VOCABULARY BUILDING, WRITING SKILLS, PHONICS INSTRUCTION, ORAL READING, ETC. 2012 ALSO MARKED THE THIRD YEAR OF THE READING ROOM'S FULL-TIME CASE MANAGER WHO MONITORS AND TRACKS STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR, AS WELL AS SERVES AS A LIAISON BETWEEN THE PROGRAM, THE STUDENTS' SCHOOLS AND THEIR PARENTS. IN AN EFFORT TO PROVIDE A CREATIVE OUTLET, THE READING ROOM ALLOWS STUDENTS TO UTILIZE CRITICAL LITERACY SKILLS AS A VEHICLE FOR SELF EXPRESSION, BOTH WRITTEN AND THROUGH PERFORMANCE, WITH THE OMARI HARDWICK BLUAPPLE POETRY CORNER, A SPOKEN WORD POETRY COMPONENT HELD EACH FRIDAY. THROUGH THE JASON TAYLOR FOUNDATION'S CONTINUING PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, ADDITIONAL EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO READING ROOM STUDENTS INCLUDING COOKING AND NUTRITIONAL CLASSES, MENTORING PROGRAMS, FIELD DAYS AND MORE.
