“RE: Delegation to Management Company: The Foundation delegates many functions by contract to Third Plateau Social Impact Strategies ("TP"), a philanthropic management and advisory services firm that provides the Foundation a range of management and administrative services and back office support, including accounting and tax preparation, purchasing insurance and risk management, mailing address and phone, administrative and vendor management, grants administration and program support and administration. The Foundation's directors approved payments of $60,000 to TP for services in 2020.”
“RE: Persons who elect directors: Under the Foundation's Bylaws and California Public Benefit Nonprofit Corporation Law, the Foundation's designators elect the Foundation's directors.”
“RE: Governance decisions: The Foundation's designators approve any Bylaw amendment. All other governance decisions are made by the full board of directors.”
“RE: Board review of 990 prior to filing: Form 990, including all schedules and attachments, are sent to the directors and members of the board in draft form seeking review and comment, along with a transmittal email calling their attention to sections of the form most likely to be of interest to members of the public and potential donors.”
“RE: Monitoring and enforcement of Conflict of Interest policy: The Abundance Foundation is a small organization, so relationships which could give rise to conflicts are easily identifiable. In 2011, a form requesting information on conflicts resulting from any family or business relationship was sent to and completed by members of the board and corporate officers with a request to advise other members of the board of any changes that may occur in subsequent years. The form was updated by all directors and officers in 2020. If such a relationship is reported or known, the directors follow the procedures of the Conflict of Interest Policy which directs the full disclosure of all facts and circumstances, consideration by the board of the nature and seriousness of the conflict and makes a decision about whether to enter into the transaction and, if so, to ensure the terms of the transaction are appropriate. The potentially interested person must recuse him or herself from any decision which could benefit him or her personally.”
“RE: Process for reviewing compensation: CEO - The independent members of the Board consult with legal Counsel, reviews compensation surveys and materials compiled by Counsel and confer with individuals working in the nonprofit field to determine a reasonable salary for the CEO based on the job description and professional credentials required.”
“RE: Other Officers & Key Employees - The full Board consults with legal Counsel, reviews compensation surveys and materials compiled by Counsel and confer with other individuals working in the nonprofit field to determine a reasonable salary for the Programs Officer based on the job description.”
“RE: Disclosure policies: No documents other than Form 990 and 1023 are available to the public.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | HEALTH: Dr. Stephen Kahn, the Foundation's President, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician. Dr. Kahn has extensive experience working in global health ecosystems and he provides clinical and health system expertise for the Foundation's program partners. Having completed his medical training at Harvard Medical School (HMS), Dr. Kahn now serves on HMS's Board of Fellows and he is the Chair of the HMS Global Health and Service Advisory Council In 2020, the Abundance Foundation continued and built on its multifaceted global health commitment -- made in partnership with Harvard Medical School and Partners In Health -- that is called the Abundance Project for Global Health (APGH). For over a decade, this project has supported training global health leaders, researching tools to prevent the spread of epidemic disease, and addressing the social determinants of health. The APGH has provided longstanding, foundational support for the Better Evidence program at Ariadne Labs, which is a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham & Women's Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. 2020 marked the 10th year of the Abundance Foundation partnering with Better Evidence and Wolters Kluwer to provide free access to the exceptional evidence-based digital clinical tools (known as UpToDate) to more than 24,000 providers serving vulnerable populations in over 120 countries around the world. This is a 38% growth in providers over 2019. 2020 was also notable for the continued expansion of the Better Evidence for Training Program - doubling the number of teaching facilities in Africa receiving free access to UpToDate, from 24 to 47 facilities, reaching more than 22,000 medical students, residents and faculty across 16 medical schools. Dr. Kahn's ongoing support has also allowed the Better Evidence team to nimbly respond to the pandemic. Early in the pandemic the team helped set the stage for thinking about COVID-19 vaccine delivery, with monumental pieces published in Health Affairs and Harvard Business Review. These early pieces were among the first to warn of "vaccine nationalismX and led to ongoing engagements in support of equitable vaccine planning and delivery - such as the Vaccine Allocation and Social Justice virtual conference in December 2020. Also in 2020, the Better Evidence team developed the COVID-19 Vaccine Allocation Planner. This tool, endorsed by the National Governors' Association and recommended by the CDC, supported decision makers with the data they needed to equitably allocate limited vaccine supply. It was accessed in 160+ countries around the world, processed more than 50 million transactions, and was used by the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Univision, NBC, and others to develop interactive tools to help the general public understand their place in the vaccine line. Over the last decade of the APGH, the Abundance Foundation has collaborated with Dr. Megan Murray and her colleagues to build research capacity in resource-poor countries and to control epidemic diseases including Cholera and Ebola. Dr. Murray is the Director of Harvard Medical School's Global Health Research Core (GHRC), and she hypothesizes that BCG, which has a century- long safe track record, had unique potential to offer an effective and equitable solution as the most widely used vaccine in the world. In March 2020, when COVID-19 started to spread more widely, the Abundance Foundation supported Dr. Murray's clinical research to evaluate the effectiveness of the BCG vaccine to prevent COVID-19 and a wide range of other respiratory infections. The Foundation worked to spread the word about Dr. Murray's work and connect with other funders to support a randomized, placebo- controlled clinical trial. In response to the COVID pandemic, the Abundance Foundation supported and made grants to the Haiti Clinic, where Drs. Kobel Dubique and Nadege Belizaire responded to their communities' pressing health ne |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | ARTS & EDUCATION: Abundance has been a supporter of the Out of Eden Walk (OOEW) for nearly a decade. Our partnership began long before Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and National Geographic Society explorer Paul Salopek began his 25,000 mile on-foot journey following the path of human migration. The Abundance Foundation's President, Dr. Kahn continues to serve on the OOEW's Board of Trustees. By 2020, Out of Eden Walk has produced a total of over 425 in-depth articles on topics ranging from mass migration and cultural survival to environmental crises; and on National Geographic Digital, OOEW had published more than 400,000 words, 1,500 photos and 280 videos, with an archive of 50,000 unpublished images. Abundance was the original supporter and strategic partner for the creation of Out of Eden Learn (OOEL), a unique, custom-built social media platform for students aged 3-19, inspired by the Out of Eden Walk. OOEL is an initiative of Project Zero, a research institute at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. The program provides collective learning experiences, grouping together students of similar ages from diverse geographical and socioeconomic settings. Since the platform's inception, Abundance Foundation staff has played a vital role in advising and supporting the core OOEL team in program and curriculum design, research, and development work. OOEL responded to the COVID-19 crisis by developing new resources and adapting old ones to meet an unprecedented moment for educators and learners everywhere. Two new learning journeys were created to accommodate students affected by the pandemic: Looking Closely at Objects with Other Generations, and Creating and Sharing Neighborhood Maps. Throughout the pandemic, the OOEL teacher and student community has remained robust. To date, this entirely free program has engaged well over 40,000 students in 62 countries and 43 states, inviting young people to (1) slow down to observe the world carefully and listen attentively to others; (2) share stories and perspectives with one another; and (3) make connections between their own lives and bigger human stories. In an exciting new development in 2020, Out of Eden Learn began the process of negotiating a partnership with the National Geographic Society so that National Geographic can integrate OOEL into their own educational offerings and extend the reach of this inspired learning approach to millions of students around the world. In partnership with the Abundance Foundation, Project Zero launched Agency by Design, which explores the practices and pedagogies of maker- centered learning; and resulted in the publication of the book "Maker- Centered Learning: Empowering Young People to Shape Their Worlds." In addition to research on K-12 maker-centered learning, the work included an action-research component based in Oakland, CA, involving dozens of teachers and administrators from a consortium of six public, charter, and private schools. These Oakland educators came to the project with a steadfast commitment to racial justice and equity. Abundance was the anchor strategic and operational partner from the initiation through to the launch of this dimension of the project as an independent non-profit, Agency by Design - Oakland (AbD-Oakland). In 2020, Abundance Foundation supported AbD Oakland to pivot during the pandemic and reach 3,766 Oakland youth, 30 educators in 12 schools. In response to the COVID pandemic, Abundance supported the Center for the Arts Port-au-Prince to provide tools for the girls involved in this program to create community handwashing stations amongst other activities. Additionally, in 2020 the Abundance Foundation continued to provide support for Voice of Witness, a non-profit that advances human rights by amplifying the voices of people impacted by systemic injustice. Since its founding, The Abundance Foundation has been a consistent supporter of Chapter 510. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Abundance supported Chapter |
