Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Leading Youth to the Dream of Flight and Offering Adults Opportunities to Serve Through Aviation

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
SATURDAY FREE FLIGHTS: TigerFlight hosts organized youth groups usually on the first Saturday of the month. All flights are part of the Experimental Aircraft Association Youn Eagle program. Youth who attend these events enjoy a 20-min aircraft ride and tours of the airport. This is our most popular youth activity. In 2024 we flew 73 youth on Young Eagles Flights.$0$19,433
TIGERFLIGHT GROUND CREW: In 2024 the Tiger Flight Ground crew directly served youth living in Floyd County, the area around Russell Regional Airport. 4-6 youth participated in specific Ground Crew activities. They also supported TFF Young Eagle Rallies. The TF Ground Crew tow aircraft from the hangar in the morning and help pilots with their preflight. Working under the supervision of a TF Pilot, the TF Ground Crew marshal aircraft in and out of parking and escort guests walking from the hangar to the aircraft and back. When flying is complete for the day, the TF Ground Crew tow the aircraft back in the hangar and help clean the aircraft. Members of the TF Ground Crew regularly have the opportunity to fly with TF pilots and by interacting directly with pilots, learn about the aircraft and aviation in general. The TigerFlight Ground Crew is an integral and critical component of TigerFlight.$0$6,477
AIRPORT FIELD TRIPS: Tiger Flight airport field trips last about 2 hours. In the first hour we organize the tour with three 15-minute stations for 5-8 youth. 1) We walk around the outside of the aircraft describing how an airfoil produces lift, the parts of the aircraft, and how the flight control surfaces maneuver the plane. 2) Each student sits in the cockpit as we discuss the instruments, how the yoke and rudder pedals moves the flight control surfaces, and how the throttle controls the engine. 3) During the airport tour we explain designations and markings for taxiways and runways, legs of the traffic pattern, the automatic weather station, how to interpret the windsock, and time zones around the world. In the second hour we lead them in a competitive activity making foam plate gliders and learning how to adjust the flight control surfaces to maneuver the glider to land on a specific spot and turn and fly through a hoop. Then we finish with a 15-min Pilot in Command of Your Life presentation. 2024 Airfield Tours April One Hundred Black Men Middle School 15 Youth June Rome Scholars Rising 5th graders 70 youth July Georgia Highlands College Summer Camp High School 20 Youth Middle School 40 youth Sept One Hundred Black Men Middle School 15 youth$0$5,182
SCOUTS BSA AVIATION MERIT BADGE: In 2024 TFF hosted only one Aviation Merit Badge Clinic. 9 Scouts and 6 adults participated in the clinic. The Scouts learned about the physics of flight, aircraft systems, navigation, how to preflight an aircraft, and how an airport operates. Each Scout went for a 20-minute flight. TFF conducts these free flights for Scouts within the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagle program.$0$4,319
TIGER FLIGHT AVIATION ACADEMY: In 2024 TFF initiated the TFAA. Meeting alternate Thursdays during the school year from 6:30 to 8 pm, high school age students learn about careers in aviation. We partner with the Northwest Georgia Technical College Airframe and Powerplant school located on the airport. Each session begins with a learning/lecture period, then a team building exercise and finally a lab for hands-on application of a skill. In 2024 7 students regularly attended. During the summer months the sessions are dedicated to flight opportunities longer than a typical Young Eagle Flight. Several of the TFAA students have joined the TF Ground Crew.$0$3,455
PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE ORIENTATION: Our objective in the PPLO is to make teenagers competitive for private pilot training scholarships. We focus specifically on the USAF Flight Academy, a free program for AFJROTC cadets to earn a private pilot license over a summer. Cadets attend up to 8 hours of ground school and receive up to about 8 hours of inflight training. The instruction is pre-solo training with emphasis on basic aircraft control and understanding airport operations. In 2024 we worked with 1 student delivering 2 hours of ground instruction and 2 hours of flight instruction.$0$3,023
TIGER FLIGHT FORMATION TEAM: 4 of the 17 TF pilots make up the TigerFlight Formation Team. 3 of them are former military pilots; 2 were fighter pilots. Each member of the TF Formation Team completed rigorous training and was certified by a Formation and Safety Team (FAST) check pilot. The pilots on the team conduct regular training to maintain their formation proficiency$0$1,296
PILOT IN COMMAND OF YOUR LIFE PRESENTATIONS: TF pilots offer these motivational presentations to youth groups and schools. We delivered six "PIC of Your Life" presentations in 2024. These presentations are part of field trips or other youth activities at the TF Hangar. Pilots speak about their experiences in aviation and weave through their path to becoming a pilot. The central themes include: Dream!! It's up to you to Dream and take steps to pursue your Dream. Establish a record of making appropriate decisions, pursue your dreams (not somebody else's). Establish excellence as a way of life, Don't be Good ...Be Great! Make plans to achieve your dreams, think long term, seek leadership opportunities, set short-term goals that lead to your long-term goal. Continually evaluate your progress toward your dream and make adjustments. Don't let short-term setbacks derail your pursuit of your long-term dream. Be resilient in pursing your dream. A dream without a plan is nothing more than a wish. Don't wish, Act!$0$0
