Mission

Provide public education and information to communities and neighborhoods regarding the need for affordable housing and propose strategies to increase the housing supply with particular emphasis on workforce housing; promote municipal land use ordinances that will create responsible and affordable housing; develop and implement strategies through which various entities work together to develop housing and sources of funding for affordable housing.

A MAJOR THEME OF THIS FISCAL YEAR'S WORK WAS RESPONDING TO REQUESTS FOR OUTREACH AND EDUCATION AS A RESULT OF OUR CONTINUED ADVOCACY THROUGHOUT THE RECESSION. RENEWED INTEREST IN WORKFORCE HOUSING PRODUCTION IS AN ENCOURAGING OPPORTUNITY FOR THE COALITION TO PARTNER WITH DIVERSE GROUPS TO SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS. THIS INCLUDES MEETINGS WITH DEVELOPERS TO DISCUSS WORKFORCE HOUSING NEEDS AND PREFERENCES, HELPING COMMUNITY GROUPS SEARCH FOR POTENTIAL SITES, AND INVESTIGATE NEW WAYS TO HELP WORKFORCE HOUSING CONSTRUCTION.THIS PAST YEAR, THE COALITION WAS INVOLVED WITH COMMUNITIES SUCH AS HANOVER NH DESIGNING REGULATIONS THAT ENCOURAGE WORKFORCE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. WORKING WITH DEVELOPERS, THE COALITION HELPED CONSULT ON THE DIRECTION OF PROJECTS IN THEIR INITIAL STAGES. THE COALITION HAS ALSO TAKEN AN ACTIVE ROLE IN PARTNERING IN NEW WAYS OF ORGANIZING FOCUS GROUPS AND BEGINNING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT EMPLOYER-ASSISTED HOUSING.A PROMISING NEW AREA OF WORK THIS YEAR WAS PARTNERING WITH THE UPPER VALLEY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP. WE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THEM TO ORGANIZE A "HOUSING FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS" SEMINAR FROM WHICH WE RECEIVED VERY POSITIVE FEEDBACK. AT THEIR REQUEST, THIS SEMINAR WAS FOLLOWED BY A HOME BUYER EDUCATION SEMINAR WHICH DREW 25 YOUNG PROFESSIONALS. IN ADDITION WE INVITED THEM TO ORGANIZE A FOCUS GROUP TO DISCUSS THEIR HOUSING PREFERENCES AND SHARE THEIR INPUT WITH A DEVELOPER ON A POTENTIAL HOUSING PROJECT CURRENTLY IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. ALTHOUGH THIS YEAR BROUGHT MANY NEW OPPORTUNITIES, WE HAVE ALSO CONTINUED SOME OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL LONG-TERM INITIATIVES OF THE COALITION. THIS YEAR WE HOSTED TWO VERY WELL-ATTENDED BUSINESS LEADERS BREAKFASTS. BOTH EVENTS WERE SPONSORED BY LOCAL BANKS. THIS YEAR WE ALSO STARTED SPONSORING EDUCATIONAL EVENTS FOR REALTORS, EDUCATING THE REALTOR COMMUNITY BOTH ABOUT HOUSING NEEDS AND THE ROLE OF THE COALITION.$0$24,201
THIS PAST YEAR WE CONTINUED OUR WORK TO CREATE A LONG TERM STRATEGY FOR UPPER VALLEY STRONG. UPPER VALLEY STRONG IS A REGIONAL DISASTER RECOVERY ORGANIZATION. THE ORGANIZATION IS A BROAD COLLABORATION OF LOCAL AGENCIES, MUNICIPALITIES, FAITH GROUPS, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS THAT WORKS WITH INDIVIDUALS IN TIMES OF DISASTER. TO THAT END, WE HAVE ASSISTED IN FUNDRAISING, PROVIDED STORAGE FOR THE MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT, AND HAVE BEGUN THE WORK OF CREATING A STRUCTURE FOR UPPER VALLEY STRONG THAT IS INDEPENDENT AND SUSTAINABLE YEAR TO YEAR WHILE BEING READY ON SHORT NOTICE TO QUICKLY RESPOND TO FUTURE DISASTERS LIKE THE FLOODING EVENTS OF 2011 AND 2012.$0$8,690
THE IRENE COTTAGE HIGH-PERFORMANCE HOME EFFORT HAS ALSO RECEIVED A MAJOR BOOST IN THE FORM OF A GRANT TO CONSTRUCT TWO PILOT UNITS, A TWO AND A THREE BEDROOM UNIT, ON SITES IN WILDER. THESE MODULAR HOMES ARE DESIGNED TO BE PERMANENT HOUSING THAT IS BOTH ATTRACTIVE AND VERY ENERGY EFFICIENT. OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO PROMOTE THESE HOMES AS ATTRACTIVE AND AFFORDABLE OPTIONS FOR LOWER COST HOUSING IN OUR AREA.$0$7,499

THIS INCLUDES MEETINGS WITH DEVELOPERS TO DISCUSS WORKFORCE HOUSING NEEDS AND PREFERENCES, HELPING COMMUNITY GROUPS SEARCH FOR POTENTIAL SITES, AND INVESTIGATE NEW WAYS TO HELP WORKFORCE HOUSING CONSTRUCTION.THIS PAST YEAR, THE COALITION WAS INVOLVED WITH COMMUNITIES SUCH AS HANOVER NH DESIGNING REGULATIONS THAT ENCOURAGE WORKFORCE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. WORKING WITH DEVELOPERS, THE COALITION HELPED CONSULT ON THE DIRECTION OF PROJECTS IN THEIR INITIAL STAGES. THE COALITION HAS ALSO TAKEN AN ACTIVE ROLE IN PARTNERING IN NEW WAYS OF ORGANIZING FOCUS GROUPS AND BEGINNING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT EMPLOYER-ASSISTED HOUSING.A PROMISING NEW AREA OF WORK THIS YEAR WAS PARTNERING WITH THE UPPER VALLEY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP. WE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THEM TO ORGANIZE A "HOUSING FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS" SEMINAR FROM WHICH WE RECEIVED VERY POSITIVE FEEDBACK. AT THEIR REQUEST, THIS SEMINAR WAS FOLLOWED BY A HOME BUYER EDUCATION SEMINAR WHICH DREW 25 YOUNG PROFESSIONALS. IN ADDITION WE INVITED THEM TO ORGANIZE A FOCUS GROUP TO DISCUSS THEIR HOUSING PREFERENCES AND SHARE THEIR INPUT WITH A DEVELOPER ON A POTENTIAL HOUSING PROJECT CURRENTLY IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. ALTHOUGH THIS YEAR BROUGHT MANY NEW OPPORTUNITIES, WE HAVE ALSO CONTINUED SOME OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL LONG-TERM INITIATIVES OF THE COALITION. THIS YEAR WE HOSTED TWO VERY WELL-ATTENDED BUSINESS LEADERS BREAKFASTS. BOTH EVENTS WERE SPONSORED BY LOCAL BANKS. THIS YEAR WE ALSO STARTED SPONSORING EDUCATIONAL EVENTS FOR REALTORS, EDUCATING THE REALTOR COMMUNITY BOTH ABOUT HOUSING NEEDS AND THE ROLE OF THE COALITION.

THE ORGANIZATION IS A BROAD COLLABORATION OF LOCAL AGENCIES, MUNICIPALITIES, FAITH GROUPS, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS THAT WORKS WITH INDIVIDUALS IN TIMES OF DISASTER. TO THAT END, WE HAVE ASSISTED IN FUNDRAISING, PROVIDED STORAGE FOR THE MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT, AND HAVE BEGUN THE WORK OF CREATING A STRUCTURE FOR UPPER VALLEY STRONG THAT IS INDEPENDENT AND SUSTAINABLE YEAR TO YEAR WHILE BEING READY ON SHORT NOTICE TO QUICKLY RESPOND TO FUTURE DISASTERS LIKE THE FLOODING EVENTS OF 2011 AND 2012.

THESE MODULAR HOMES ARE DESIGNED TO BE PERMANENT HOUSING THAT IS BOTH ATTRACTIVE AND VERY ENERGY EFFICIENT.
