- Northeast shelter the northeast shelter or "nes" opened in 1996 in response to a perceived need for services in more rural areas of dutchess county. The facility has a small, rural setting which provides a homey atmosphere and an enhanced sense of safety for up to 10 clients. Adult clients and their dependent children who are survivors of physical, verbal, psychological, sexual, economic, or threatened abuse by the person with whom they live or have lived in the past are candidates for shelter. It is not required that the survivor be residing with the abuser at the time of the incident. The two main criteria are that they need safety from an intimate partner or family member who is abusing them and that grace smith house has beds available.clients of any age, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or national group use shelter services. Ages served are from newborn to 16 accompanied by their parent. Adults (emancipated) vary from age 16 to 70. Both shelter residences are handicapped-accessible. The maximum length of shelter stay is 90 days with the average length equaling 1 to 4 weeks. In 2012, northeast shelter program served 33 adults and 24 children. During this report period the average length of residency increased to 40 days with the thought being the fiscal challenges in the economy being one cause.
- Activity 3
- Outreach programtwo staff members are housed at family court to take all of the clients coming in for family offense petitions. They also make referrals to domestic violence services as appropriate and can provide some court advocacy. They served over 1,490 clients in 2012. There are two staff members housed at child protective services who provide services to clients and consultation to cps workers on issues relating to domestic violence. In 2012 they served 233 clients.
