Mission

St. Bartholomew's conservancy, inc., an independent, 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation, works to restore and preserve the historic character and architectural significance of the landmark st. Bartholomew's site (church, community house and gardens) in the city of new york. Its mission is to raise funds necessary to restore, preserve and maintain the building exteriors and gardens of the st. Bartholomew's site as a gift to the city and to the nation, and in so doing, to broaden public awareness of the importance of historic preservation in the urban environment.

The conservancy raises funds for the exterior restoration and preservation of the st. Bartholomew's site.

St. Bartholomew's conservancy has its form 990 prepared by an outside accounting firm and has established the following review process to ensure that the information reported is complete and accurate. When the form 990 has been prepared, reviewed by the treasurer and is ready to be filed with the internal revenue service, it is electronically sent to the board members of the organization for their review.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The conflict of interest policy of st. Bartholomew's conservancy, inc. (the "corporation") is applicable to all directors, officers, employees, and others who have the ability to exercise substantial influence over the corporation. The designated audit committee of the board, oversees the compliance with the conflict of interest policy. If a potential conflict were to arise, the interested person must disclose all material facts to the board of directors of the audit committee, in a written statement or orally at a meeting of the board, and such oral disclosure is documented in the minutes of the meeting. The interested person is precluded from being present at or participating in any board or committee deliberation or vote related to the transaction or arrangement, giving rise to a conflict of interest. After the interested persons disclosure of the existence of and all material facts, the audit committee shall discuss and make a recommendation to the board as to each of the determinations required. All actual or possible conflicts of interest are documented in the minutes of the board meeting at which such determinations are made. Each member of the board, officer, member of a committee with powers delegated by the board of directors and key employee shall annually submit to the chair of the audit committee the written statement disclosing the existence of any potential or actual conflict of interests.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The conservancy hired an independent search firm in a previous year to conduct a search and to assist in the determination of the executive director's compensation. The search firm provided guidance to the board based on their extensive experience in filling positions in the non-profit sector. The executive director's compensation was thus determined using competitive data and input provided by the search firm, presented to the board for their approval, and documented in board minutes. The executive director's compensation has not changed from prior year. The process was relied upon to determine executive compensation in 2019.

(PHASE III IS CONTINUING IN 2020.) DURING THE SPRING OF 2019, GSAPP'S INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES CLASS MADE SEVERAL SITE VISITS TO ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH FOR CONTINUED STUDY OF THE CELEBRATED STANFORD WHITE TRIPLE PORTAL. THE PORTAL IS A SIGNIFICANT WORK OF ART AS PART OF THIS NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK AND AN IMPORTANT TREASURE FOR THE CITY OF NEW YORK. PARAMOUNT TO THE SUCCESSFUL RESTORATION OF THE PORTAL IS THE IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION REQUIRED TO PROPERLY ASSESS THE CONDITIONS AND MAKE APPROPRIATE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ITS TREATMENT.IN 2019 THE FOCUS WAS ON NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION (NDE) TECHNIQUES OF GROUND PENETRATING RADAR (GPR) AND ULTRASOUND PULSE VELOCITY. THESE TECHNIQUES WERE RECOMMENDED BY THE PRIOR GSAPP CLASS THAT RECORDED SURFACE CONDITIONS OF THE FRONT PORTICO MARBLE, TO DETERMINE IF NDE COULD PROVIDE INFORMATION ON ITS SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS. GPR WAS ABLE TO DETECT POSSIBLE REPAIR PINS WITHIN THE COLUMNS, AND ULTRASOUND COULD DISCERN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DAMAGED AND UNDAMAGED AREAS. THESE TECHNIQUES WILL BE EMPLOYED MORE METHODICALLY ON ALL COLUMNS TO DOCUMENT THE SUBSURFACE ANOMALIES AND HELP DETERMINE A CONSERVATION APPROACH. CLEANING TESTING WAS ALSO UNDERTAKEN ON THE LIMESTONE WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION GIVEN TO THE GREEN BIOLOGICAL GROWTH ON THE LIMESTONE PLINTHS, ATMOSPHERIC SOILING ON THE STATUES, AND THE GYPSUM CRUST ON THE COLUMN CAPITALS. FURTHER TESTING IS REQUIRED, BUT PROMISING RESULTS ON THE GYPSUM CRUST WERE ATTAINED FROM THE INITIAL STUDY. (THE UPDATED BUILDING DIAGNOSTICS AND CONDITIONS SURVEY CAN BE FOUND ON THE CONSERVANCY'S WEBSITE WWW.STBCONSERVANCY.ORG UNDER THE TABS THE LANDMARK SITE / ST. FUNDS ARE RELEASED AS REIMBURSEMENTS FOR EXPENDITURES THAT ARE SUBMITTED BY INVOICE WITH ALL VENDOR BACKUP INFORMATION INCLUDED. THE INVOICES ARE SUBMITTED BY THE CHURCH'S FINANCIAL MANAGER BY CONFIRMATION OF THE FACILITIES MANAGER. THE CONSERVANCY'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REVIEWS ALL OF THE DOCUMENTATION SUBMITTED AND CONFIRMS ITS ACCURACY PRIOR TO PAYMENT. THE CONSERVANCY'S MISSION IS TO SPECIFICALLY HELP FUND RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH. THE $102,403 WAS FOR THE ILLUMINATION OF THE CHURCH'S ICONIC DOME, WHICH HAS INVOLVED MULTIPLE VENDORS/CONTRACTORS. THE $15,000 GRANT PROVIDED IN 2019 TO COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY RESULTED FROM A COLLABORATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION UNDERTAKEN BETWEEN THE CONSERVANCY AND THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING, AND PRESERVATION. THE PROJECT LED TO A BUILDING DIAGNOSTICS AND CONDITIONS SURVEY OF THE HISTORIC STANFORD WHITE TRIPLE PORTAL. FUNDING FOR THIS GRANT WAS PROVIDED BY A GRANT TO THE CONSERVANCY FROM A DONOR SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS PURPOSE. THUS, THE $15,000 GRANT TO COLUMBIA WAS DETERMINED BY THE AMOUNT OF THE FHS AWARD TO THE CONSERVANCY. THE PROJECT WILL CONTINUE IN 2020 WITH USE OF THE EQUIPMENT PURCHASED IN PART BY THE $15,000 FUNDING TO DO A FULL SCALE SCAN OF THE HISTORIC TRIPLE PORTAL IN FURTHERANCE OF THE PROJECT GOALS: PARAMOUNT TO THE SUCCESSFUL RESTORATION OF THE TRIPLE PORTAL IS AN IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION REQUIRED TO PROPERLY ASSESS THE CONDITIONS AND MAKE APPROPRIATE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ITS TREATMENT. THE CONSERVANCY SCHEDULES DATES WITH THE LABORATORY MANAGER FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS AND FACULTY TO COME TO ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH WITH THE EQUIPMENT TO SCAN THE HISTORIC TRIPLE PORTAL OF THE WEST FACADE.
