Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Goodspeed opera house foundation,inc. Was formed in 1959 to restore the 19th century goodspeed opera house and reactivate it as a professional theatre in 1963. Under the direction of michael p. Price since 1968, goodspeed has achieved international acclaim as the home of musical theatre. Dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre and the development of new works to add to the repertoire, goodspeed pioneered the practice of rethinking, restoring, and revitalizing america's musical theatre heritage.

The mission of goodspeed opera house foundation, inc. Is to be the leader in preserving and producing musical theatre of the highest quality by:1. Rethinking, restoring and producing works that are valued and significant in the history of musical theatre;2. Developing new musical theatre works;3. Nurturing the talents of new composers, lyricists and librettists;4. Encouraging and developing the talents of artists, technicians, and administrators;5. Inspiring future audiences through education programs and outreach efforts;6. Preserving and expanding the archival collections of its scherer library of musical theatre and making them available for professional use;7. Maintaining the goodspeed opera house, a national historic landmark.

ALSO IN 2013 WAS THE WRITERS COLONY WHERE 50 WRITERS WERE IN RESIDENCE FOR 4 WEEKS TO WORK ON NEW MUSICALS. ALSO DURING 2013 SEVERAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS WERE HELD. THEY INCLUDED, AUDITION INTENSIVE, DANCE INTENSIVE, MASTER AUDITION CLASS, AND SCENIC PAINTING INTENSIVE. THESE BROUGHT STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO LEARN ABOUT MUSICAL THEATER.DURING 2013 THE NORMA TERRACE THEATER IN CHESTER CT PRESENTED THREE SHOWS. THE FIRST WAS AN ORIGINAL PRODUCTION CALLED "THE FABULOUS LIPITONES, SECOND WAS ANOTHER ORIGINAL PRODUCTION CALLED "LMNOP, AND THIRD WAS "SNAPSHOTS" A PRODUCTION FEATURING THE MUSIC OF STEVEN SCHWARTZ. ATTENDANCE AT THE NORMA TERRACE THEATER WAS 12,696 PATRONS AT 90 PERFORMANCES.TOTAL ATTENDANCE FOR 2013 WAS 99,454 PATRONS AT 352 PERFORMANCES.
