“Candid's form 990 is prepared by the outside accounting firm, pkf o'connor davies. The form 990 is then reviewed by the organization's vp of finance and ceo. Subsequently, the audit committee of candid's board of trustees and the full board receive an electronic copy of the form 990 and reviews the return. After responding to all inquiries and making any necessary changes, the final form 990 is provided to all members of the board prior to its filing with the irs.”
“A conflict of interest disclosure statement is obtained annually from all trustees, officers, manager and other key employees who are currently serving candid. A report summarizing the disclosure statements is provided to the board of trustees annually. It is candid's policy that in the event of a conflict the following is done: if there is a conflict relevant to a matter requiring action by the board of trustees, the interested person shall call it to the attention of the board of trustees, and the trustee concerned shall not vote on the matter. Moreover, the person having a conflict may answer questions that shall arise from the board of trustees, but shall retire from the room in which the board is meeting and shall not participate in any deliberation or decision regarding the matter under consideration. When there is doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the matter shall be resolved by vote of the board of trustees or its committee, excluding from the room and the vote the person whose situation will be discussed. When a conflict of interest arises for any staff member except the president, that staff member shall report it to the president in writing. A conflict of interest relating to the president shall be reported in writing to the chair of the board. In addition, if the conflicted party has a substantial financial interest in the matter, the board would need to consider alternatives.”
“Candid's board of trustees, consisting of independent persons, establishes compensation for the ceo and reviews the compensation for the other officer(s) and vice presidents on an annual basis. Prior to making compensation decisions, the board obtains information on the compensation of functionally comparable positions for similarly qualified persons at similarly situated organizations and/or benchmark salaries for select positions obtained from salary surveys. Documentation of the deliberations and decisions were made via email. The compensation review process was last undertaken in november 2021.”
“Candid's audited financial statements and annual report for the past five years are posted on its website and are downloadable. In addition, governance and staffing policies are posted, including the code of conduct (which includes the conflict of interest policy), diversity statement and the executive compensation policy.”
“Every year, millions of nonprofits spend trillions of dollars around the world. Candid finds out where that money comes from, where it goes, and why it matters. Through research, collaboration, and training, candid connects people who want to change the world to the resources they need to do it. Candid's data tools on nonprofits, foundations, and grants are the most comprehensive in the world. Candid gets you the information you need to do good.”
“Major data collection and publications program accomplishments in 2021 include the following: in 2021, we continued to expand our network of global funders who share their data directly with candid. Some new funders who have joined or are in the process of joining our ereporting program include the zagoriy foundation in ukraine, fundao calouste gulbenkian in portugal, equity bank foundation in east africa, and foundation maison des sciences de l'homme in france. Once in our database, their grants are coded to candid's philanthropy classification system (pcs), which then helps populate many of our data tools, such as foundation maps, foundation directory, and subject-specific custom tools on topics like human rights, peace and security, sustainable development goals, and disaster funding. We also worked with affinity groups such as the human rights funders network and the peace and security funders group to encourage funders in their networks to share their data with us. Partnering with these groups allows us to reach broader networks of funders, rather than working with each funder individually to encourage data sharing and transparency. Regional giving dashboards candid's regional giving dashboards provide an at-a-glance overview of institutional philanthropy across the country and around the world. Currently 28 regions have a template view of their local philanthropic sector thanks to our work with the regional associations and the united philanthropy forum. These dashboards are public facing and continue to be updated with the latest data available. In 2021, we partnered with philanthropy southwest to launch a 7-state dashboard covering the southwest which includes snapshots for texas, colorado, arkansas, oklahoma, arizona, nevada, and new mexico. Foundation directory and quick start foundation directory provides subscribers with access to timely, comprehensive information on u.s. Grantmakers and their grants, plus a growing number of foundations located outside the u.s. The professional version of foundation directory is accessible to organizations and community stakeholders at no cost through the funding information network. In 2021, we added over three million grants to our dataset, which now includes 22.4 million grant records with 157,000 grantmaker profiles. We also improved transparency on giving through donor advised funds by adding fund names when available. For those who cannot access foundation directory through the funding information network, candid's quick start option provides free online access to essential information about 100,000 foundations and $52 billion in annual funding. Foundation maps foundation maps is candid's premier data visualization tool to show who is funding what, and where, around the world. With millions of grants from 2006 to the present, innovative ways to visualize funding data, and the flexibility and precision to tailor research, foundation maps helps funders and nonprofits access the knowledge they need to make strategic decisions and strengthen their impact. Foundation maps currently includes data on 23.6 million grants totaling $4.4 trillion made by 243,223 funders to 2.4 million recipients. In 2021, we enhanced the foundation maps homepage to present giving insights based on an international user's geographical location. This view updates automatically upon login and makes it easy to quickly see relevant international giving insights such as regional funding overview, top subject areas, and a list of the top funders and recipients.”
“Major library/learning center and other public services accomplishments in 2021 include the following: the center has an online librarian who responds to reference questions from people who prefer to use its resources online. The center provides free in-person programs which give participants a comprehensive understanding of the grant-seeking process. The center also coordinates a network of funding information centers nationwide and around the world. In 2021, fin partners offered free local access to core center resources, including the foundation directory online professional and training. Other major library/learning center accomplishments in 2021 include the following: candid learning candid learning is our single destination for trainings, resources, and learning experiences. Our experienced staff, network of trainers, time-tested content, and use of data to ground education in facts make these offerings possible. In 2021, 1.5 million people engaged with candid learning. This included folks who visited the website to access our knowledge base; referred to our collection of sample documents and nonprofit start-up tools; read our blog posts; and more. Our learning experiences are designed to meet users where they are, and these days that means remotely. With that top of mind, we ensured our learning tools were available in multiple formats, including short, educational videos; we published 36 of these new learning videos in 2021. More than 40,000 people registered for our online trainings and self-paced e-learning courses. For the first time, candid also expanded our standard curriculum to include courses specifically for funders, leveraging content from our funder-focused platforms. Libraries are critical sources for learning and for social infrastructure, especially in times of crisis. With access to public spaces severely limited due to the pandemic, we were grateful to have our ebooks library accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime. This virtual library is a curated collection of free online literature on topics pertinent to the social sector, such as fundraising, nonprofit management, social entrepreneurship, and board development. In 2021, titles from our collection were borrowed 918 times. In addition to online learning tools and in-person trainings, candid's online librarian service made it easy for people to engage with our team of experts to get answers to questions about foundations, philanthropy, fundraising, and nonprofits. In 2021, our online librarian service responded to 12,803 live chat and email inquiries and our support team responded to more than 58,000 nonprofit inquiries. Funding information network candid's funding information network includes nearly 400 community-based organizations that strengthen their localities by offering a suite of our trainings and tools free of charge to the public. Due to the ongoing pandemic, and in recognition that public-serving institutions are navigating complex questions around reopening, we continued providing these partners with temporary, remote access to foundation directory for free, enabling their communities to conduct fundraising research safely. Additionally, candid staff collaborated with our partners to deliver free training on fundraising to nearly 4,500 nonprofit professionals around the country. Philanthropy news digest (pnd) pnd, a daily news service of candid, is a collection of philanthropy-related articles and features culled from print and electronic media outlets nationwide as well as rfps from foundations and job listings. More than 1.5 million people relied on pnd as a source of information about the social sector in 2021. Philantopic, the pnd blog, provides opinions and commentary on the changing world of philanthropy and published 124 posts in 2021.”
“Major research and other programs accomplishments in 2021 include the following: knowledge services are data-driven tools and content-rich platforms developed by candid for funders and their networks, consultants, advisors, and grantees. They are designed to answer fundamental questions such as: who is funding what and where? How can we know what other funders know? How can we make the most of what we are learning? We work with partners on custom projects to turn our data, analysis, and technology into solutions for the sector. Guidestar profiles and demographic data candid's guidestar platform currently includes data on 1.8 million registered nonprofits, making it easier to understand who they are and what they do. We continue to improve our data collection and display efforts to help nonprofits share their work and tell their own story. In 2021, we streamlined requirements to make it easier for nonprofits of all sizes to participate. We introduced a system that auto-populates basic data based on an organization's 990 form, making it quicker and less tedious for organizations to claim their nonprofit profiles. As a result, we saw more organizations go beyond earning candid's bronze seal of transparency to earn a silver seal, where they share more information on their programs and brand. We also have more gold seal holders than ever, which means there is more information on their profiles about financials, people, and demographics of their leader to tell a deeper story of their work. We've also seen an increasing number of nonprofits sharing data with us through the demographic survey section of their nonprofit profiles. Since we re-launched this section in august 2019, over 28,000 organizations have shared their demographic data with us. With the addition of demographic data on an organization's leader in late 2020, we have had nearly 24,000 organizations share demographic information about their organization's leader specifically. Our nonprofit profiles include a section titled "how we listen" which helps nonprofits build awareness about the ways they can collect feedback from those they serve. This information is also shared with donors on charity navigator. Cf (community foundation) insights in january 2021, we launched a completely redesigned cf insights website. Along with updated branding and a streamlined user experience, the site now includes an online member community. This new benefit gives cf insights members the ability to communicate directly with each other through an online message board platform to share ideas, ask questions, access member-exclusive resources, and much more. This member community lets the field participate in peer learning that complements access to our data. In august, we launched our redesigned cf insights data and benchmarking platform. Thanks to support from the charles stewart mott foundation and the new york community trust, this platform gives community foundations easy access to the benchmarking data they need to make informed strategic decisions, improve their operations, and create greater impact. In addition to integrating with candid's single sign-on solution, the platform was built from the ground up on modern technology. This work puts us in a better position to continue enhancing the platform, better serving our members' needs and the broader field. Issuelab in 2021, issuelab added more than 1,200 reports to the platform. Just over half of that content was published in 2021 with most of it focused on breaking or persistent topical issues. In addition to the daily work of content collection, we undertook several technical projects to modernize the platform, making it easier to integrate issuelab content with other internal systems. Issue-based portals we use data visualization tools, news, and original research to illuminate key issues in philanthropy. Our issue-based portals are designed for ongoing updates and make it easy for donors to scan the landscape to reveal opportunitie”
“Postretirement changes other than net periodic benefit cost 232,732. Loss on disposal of property and equipment -98,042.”
“Candid did not change either its oversight process or selection process during the tax year.”
“The organization holds security deposits for tenants in an escrow account. These deposits are returned to the tenants upon termination of their leases.”
“Candid's endowment funds and board-designated amounts for long-term investment consist of permanently restricted net assets (endowment funds) and a board-designated amount for long-term investment. The permanently restricted net assets (endowment funds) are subject to donor-imposed stipulations that the principal be maintained permanently by candid. Candid has three separate endowments and it is permitted to use the income earned on the related investments for general purposes, library acquisitions and public education. The board-designated amount for long-term investment is a fund set aside by the board of trustees for long-term investment that ensure candid's financial strength and agility, and provide a reserve fund in the event of a financial emergency.”
“Candid recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that candid had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure. Candid is no longer subject to examination by the applicable jurisdictions for periods prior to december 31, 2018.”
