IN 2011 THROUGH THE A VOICE PROJECT, BIASHELP CONDUCTED ANTI-BIAS EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR THE FAMILY VOICES PROGRAM AT SAXTON MIDDLE SCHOOL. IN RESPONSE, THE NEEDS IDENTIFIED BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS' TOPICS INCLUDED: BULLYING/TECHNOBULLYING, CULTURAL SENSITIVITY, HEALTHY CHOICES AND HATE CRIMES.THE A VOICE COALITION FOSTERS UNITY AND RESPECT AMONG DIVERSE COMMUNITIES. THE COALITION IS MADE UP OF NUMEROUS COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT POSITIVELY AFFECTING COMMUNITIES. THE MISSION IS TO BE A POWERFUL, UNIFIED VOICE AND RESOURCE FOR MEMBER ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING HEALTHY AND SAFE COMMUNITIES ON LONG ISLAND. IT PROVIDES A FORUM BY WHICH MULTIPLE AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS CAN COLLABORATE THROUGH INTERACTION. MEMBERS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS AND ORGANIZATIONS CAN BRING THEIR ISSUES, STRATEGIES AND RESOURCES TO A NETWORK OF COALITION MEMBERS WHO, IN TURN, CAN ADDRESS THESE ISSUES AS A STRONG UNIFIED FORCE. OLWEUS - IN 2011, THE BIASHELP STAFF WAS CERTIFIED IN THE OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM (OBPP), WHICH IS THE MOST RESEARCHED AND BEST-KNOWN BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM AVAILABLE TODAY AND RECOGNIZED AS A MODEL PROGRAM BY FEDERAL AGENCIES LIKE SAMHSA. OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR SCHOOL SETTINGS AT BOTH THE CLASSROOM, AND INDIVIDUAL LEVELS, AND INCLUDES METHODS TO REACH OUT TO PARENTS AND THE COMMUNITY FOR INVOLVEMENT AND SUPPORT. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, AND OTHER STAFF ARE PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR INTRODUCING AND IMPLEMENTING THE PROGRAM. THESE EFFORTS ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE PEER RELATIONS AND MAKE THE SCHOOL A SAFER AND MORE POSITIVE PLACE FOR STUDENTS TO LEARN AND DEVELOP. RE-ENTRY PROJECT - IN 2011, BIASHELP CONTINUED TO PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE HEALTH IMPROVEMENTS FOR RE-ENTERING EX-OFFENDERS (HIRE) PROGRAM, A PROJECT OF THE LONG ISLAND ASSOCIATION FOR AIDS CARE, INC. (LIAAC). THE PROJECT IS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT OF THREE AGENCIES, LIAAC, BIASHELP, INC. AND THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY COUNCIL OF SUFFOLK, INC. (EOC) THAT AIDS FORMERLY INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE CURRENTLY INFECTED WITH HIV/AIDS OR AT RISK OF INFECTION AND WHO ARE RETURNING FROM FEDERAL OR STATE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES TRANSITION BACK TO LIVING IN NASSAU AND SUFFOLK COUNTY. EX-OFFENDERS ARE FACED WITH MANY OBSTACLES TO REESTABLISHING THEMSELVES PARTICULARLY ON LONG ISLAND. THE HIRE PROJECT PROVIDES HEALTH, ECONOMIC, AND RECIDIVISM PREVENTION SERVICES TO INCREASE SELF-SUFFICIENCY NOT ONLY FOR THE INDIVIDUAL, BUT FOR THEIR FAMILIES AS WELL.BIASHELP PROVIDED PSYCHOSOCIAL (RECIDIVISM PREVENTION) SERVICES THAT INCLUDED, BUT WERE NOT LIMITED TO: MENTORSHIP/EDUCATION, ANGER MANAGEMENT, GANG PREVENTION, COPING SKILLS, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND MEDIATION AMONG FAMILY MEMBERS WHO MAY HAVE MIXED FEELINGS TOWARD/AGAINST SUPPORTING THE RETURNING INDIVIDUAL. THROUGH THIS MULTIFACETED PROGRAM, HIRE PROVIDED THE NECESSARY RESOURCES AND TOOLS TO CREATE SELF-SUFFICIENCY, ENSURE HEALTHY OUTCOMES AND SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION FOR POST-INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR FAMILIES. HOTLINE - IN 2011, OUR STATE-OF-THE-ART HOTLINE RECEIVED 105 CALLS FROM VICTIMS, SERVICES PROVIDERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM LONG ISLAND. THE HOTLINE CONTINUES TO SERVE AS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE, OFFERING IMMEDIATE SUPPORT TO VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE, DISCRIMINATION AND/OR BIAS CRIMES.EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS - IN 2011, BIASHELP CONDUCTED 200 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS REACHING OVER 4,600 YOUTH AND PROVIDED 43 TRAINING/TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO OVER 1,590 ADULTS IN NASSAU AND SUFFOLK COUNTIES.
