Activity 2

Riverfront park development: oversaw the design, construction, and maintenance of various elements of the riverfront park system on 148 acres of land on the hartford and east hartford riverbanks. A majority of the 2011 expenses relate to the riverwalk south project for design. This section is the last major portion of riverwalk to complete the loop system in hartford and east hartford. This project will one day connect mortensen riverfront plaza in downtown hartford to charter oak landing and the coltsville project. The mdc provides day-to-day maintenance of the park system outside of the riverfront recapture budget, but expenses related to the upkeep of the boathouse are paid by riverfront recapture. In 2011, this included some structural repairs and exterior painting as well as renovations to the rowing space to improve storage, safety and efficiency of the program.

Activity 3

Riverfront rangers: rangers provide hospitality and information, in addition to creating a secure environment for park visitors. Rangers are responsible for opening and closing the parks on a daily basis throughout the year. Between may and october, the busy season for the parks, the rangers have an increased presence. They provide information to park visitors, assist with parking and boat launchactivities, and enforce park rules. They are in radio contact with the police departments of hartford and east hartford should a public safety issue or medical emergency occur. The rangers program is funded by the metropolitan district commission. In 2011, 22 individuals were employed as rangers, ranging from seasonal part-time to the year-round, full-time director of the program.
