Activity 2

Riverfront park development: oversaw the design and construction of various elements of the riverfront park system on 140 acres of land on the hartford and east hartford riverbanks. A majority of the 2010 expenses relate to he riverwalk south project for design and geotechnical and environmental testing. This section is technically very difficult but will one day connect the mortensen riverfront plaza to charter oak landing. Funding is being sought for the $27 million still needed for the construction of this project and its connection to the coltsville project. Approximately $93,000 was spent from a grant to design and install hartford park signage. The project was nearly complete at the end of 2010 with the remaining wayfinding signs from highway exits to be installed in 2011. In addition to signage directing people to the paks, informational signs and kiosks have been installed in the parks. Work was also completed in 2010 on the improvements to the state street landing docks to bring permanent power to the excursion boats as well as the downtown performance stage.

Activity 3

Riverfront rangers: rangers provide hospitality and information, in addition to creating a secure environment for park visitors. Rangers are responsible for opening and closing the parks on a daily basis throughout the year. Between may and october, the busy season for the parks, the rangers have more of a presence. They are in radio contact with the police departments of hartford and east hartford should a public safety issue or medical emergency occur. The rangers program is funded by the metropolitan district commission. In 2010, 27 individuals were employed as rangers, ranging from seasonal part-time to the year-round, full-time director of the program.
