Mission and Program Overview

Mission

From the top celebrates the power of music in the hands of extraordinary young people by: 1) unleashing the potential of young musicians as leaders in the arts; 2) trumpeting the role of music to impact and enrich lives; and 3) inspiring and building new audiences with a deeper appreciation for classical music.

Major Activities

Activity 2
At the heart of from the top's mission is the belief that young people can make an important contribution to the world by sharing who they are and what they love to do. This mission is brought to life by preparing young musicians across the country to be instruments of change in their communities through multiple pathways. From the tops education programs include community outreach programs across the country, half-day arts leadership orientations as part of from the top tapings, and a year-long program in boston that includes team building, mentoring, and applied community service projects: outreach activities for schools and communities in conjunction with from the tops national tour, from the top performers bring their passion and talent for music to an array of settings including schools, senior care facilities, and community centers, reaching thousands across the country every year. From the top's young artists particularly captivate young audiences; magical moments happen when a young person is turned on to music and the values of hard work and discipline by one of their peers. In addition, six million second through twelfth grade students learn about from the top performers in music textbooks and listen to their radio performances on companion cds in collaboration with macmillan/mcgraw hill publishers. Each from the top performer participates in an arts leadership orientation where they explore the power of music to empower, inspire, and create change. They discuss how artists and leaders effectively advocate for the arts; discover their unique pathways and potential as arts leaders; and identify ways they can share their stories and inspire others. Finally, they are encouraged to take action in their own communities. Following the arts leadership orientation many performers launch their own arts leadership projects supported by from the top staff. From the top's year-long intensive arts leadership program in boston (cdal boston) engages high school musicians in developing leadership skills and using their musical talents to engage diverse audiences. In january 2012, from the top graduated its first class of arts leaders from this program. Over the 12 month program they participated in leadership retreats and worked in teams to design and implement service projects at five boston-area community sites: astrazeneca hope lodge in jamaica plain, conservatory lab in brighton, goddard house assisted living in brookline, chittick elementary school in mattapan in partnership with musiconnects, and roland hayes school of music in roxbury. Collectively the arts leaders contributed more than 2,000 volunteer hours and offered access to high-quality music and learning opportunities to 1,400 school children, elderly, and cancer patients.
