FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Company one theatre was founded in 1998 to integrate boston audiences, challenge the city's social divides and foster a new generation of theatre-makers and theatregoers. Since then we have become a nationally renowned, award-winning theatre company in residence at the boston center for the arts. Our mission is to change the face of boston theatre by uniting the city's diverse communities through innovative, socially provocative performance and developing civically engaged artists.

C1 playlab - a program that works with local playwrights at various stages of their careers who receive mentorship, dramaturgical support and advocacy, including an intensive bootcamp and an annual festival.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Stage one: apprentice program offers boston public high school students summer employment in a positive, creative and safe space, focusing on community engagement. Collaborates with the city of bostons department of youth employment and engagement, as an introduction to professional theatre with master-classes in aspects ranging from budget and financial planning to interview skills and writing. Professional development for actors a low cost adult class designed for working actors and those new to the profession. These classes, run by professional acting coaches and directors, help actors continue to develop their performance skills while preparing them for auditions. Class graduates have gone on to work in nearly every theatre in boston. Engagement programs: community engagement - focused on expanding our network by building long-term relationships with community partners, both individuals and organizations. The program offers three specific projects: o artivist activated: a neighborhood-driven series of conversations that connects artists, activists, organizers and community members who are interested in igniting change in boston. Inspired by company one's participation in the museum of fine arts 'the city talks' on artivism: how does the creative community motivate boston to take action? O street team: a group of community organizers that act as organizational advocates out in the community and with our audiences. Works in boston neighborhoods, with community groups, on campuses and in our theatre, engaging our target audiences across the city. The members will staff our lobbies during performances ensuring a welcoming and engaging experience for our audiences. They will also represent c1 out in the community, including attendance at festivals, community partner events, community and civic meetings, and working with marketing on promotional needs. O onerush - a diverse group of local college students who see cultural programming as a way to bridge through production related college-focused events. They identify broader issues around equity and inclusion that are occurring across campuses that they can use their collective leverage to have a social impact. Connectivity - focused on managing, curating, and creating opportunities for connections between the work on our stages, the concerns of our producing collective, our audiences, and our community at large. They are responsible for creating and developing relationships with community partners who are directly connected to issues and themes present in our production work. Specific projects include, but are not limited to: o community building events bringing together production artists, staff, board and community partners to engage with the first moments of the rehearsal process. The play will be read, dramaturgy will present on relevant themes and community discussion will be curated. O post-show conversations and engagement events: dialogues that engage participants in conversations following our stage performances centered around exploring the issues addressed in the material. O lobby design and lobby activities: interactive displays that offer different styles of contextual information, including visual, interactive video, participant response installations and partner resources. These take on social justice, artistic, and social lenses and offer impact opportunities beyond the performance. O blogs, social media & production programs: these three tools offer insight into the artistic process, background information on programming, the individuals involved, the issues the work engages and information related to community partners.
