TEACHERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS, FACILITATED BY KNOWLEDGEABLE PEERS OR EXPERT CONSULTANTS, ARE SUPPORTED IN TRYING OUT NEW IDEAS IN THEIR CLASSROOMS AND SHARING THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH PEERS ON SITE AND AT FOLLOW-UP WORKSHOPS. IN 2019, FIRST LITERACY HOSTED 27 WORKSHOPS ON TOPICS SUCH AS:- LOW -LEVEL LITERACY INSTRUCTION- CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION- DIFFERENTIATED TEACHING FOR HISET AND GED PREPARATION- HELPING ADULT LEARNERS PERSIST IN MEETING THEIR GOALSIN TOTAL, FIRST LITERACY DIRECTLY SERVED 262 EDUCATORS AND INDIRECTLY SERVED MORE THAN 5,000 ADULT LEARNERS THROUGH OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS.OUR FIRST LITERACY LAB INITIATIVE OFFERS SMALL GRANTS TO ADULT BASIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE PRACTICE AND TO STRENGTHEN PROGRAMS. THE FLEXIBILITY OF THESE GRANTS ALLOWS PROGRAMS TO MEET EMERGING STUDENT NEEDS IN A TIMELY FASHION. THE GRANTS ALSO ALLOW VENUES SUCH AS LIBRARIES AND VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS TO INTRODUCE OR EXPAND THEIR SERVICES TO IMMIGRANTS. RECIPIENTS OF FIRST LITERACY LAB GRANTS SHARE THE RESULTS OF THEIR WORK WITH THE GREATER ABE COMMUNITY AT AN ANNUAL EVENT AND ARE SUPPORTED AND MENTORED TO BECOME FACILITATORS OF WORKSHOPS FOR ABE TEACHERS. DURING 2019, FIRST LITERACY AWARDED 11 GRANTS TO PROGRAMS IN GREATER BOSTON, IMPACTING 390 STUDENTS. PROJECTS INCLUDE:- PARENT TALK AN ESOL UNIT FOR PARENTS OF VERY YOUNG CHILDREN: DEVELOP AND TEACH AN ESOL CURRICULUM FOR PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WITH HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, DAY-CARE TEACHERS, AND SHELTER STAFF ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN.- FAMILY LITERACY AND STORYTELLING: DEVELOP CURRICULUM TO TEACH ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS USING CHILDREN'S LITERATURE AND INVOLVE STUDENTS IN A DIGITAL STORYTELLING PROJECT.- VOLUNTEER IN ENGLISH - ESOL THROUGH SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECTS: IMPLEMENT A SERVICE-LEARNING COMPONENT WITHIN AN ESOL CLASS TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND LEARN MORE ABOUT BOSTON RESOURCES.TO EXTEND THE DISSEMINATION OF FINDINGS FROM FIRST LITERACY LAB GRANTS, TEACHERS WHO COMPLETE SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS ARE INVITED TO BECOME PRESENTERS OF WORKSHOPS IN THE FOLLOWING YEAR. IN OCTOBER 2018, 60 ADULT EDUCATORS GATHERED AT DISTRICT HALL IN BOSTON'S SEAPORT TO HEAR THE RESULTS OF THE 2018 FIRST LITERACY LAB PROJECTS.ADULT LEARNERS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED BASIC STUDIES IN AN ABE PROGRAM AND ARE PURSUING COLLEGE OR TECHNICAL EDUCATION ARE ELIGIBLE FOR A FIRST LITERACY SCHOLARSHIP.
