Since 1988, first literacy has served as a vital resource for adults with low literacy skills or with limited proficiency in english. We work to ensure that adult learners receive the education they need to thrive in their personal and family lives, in the workplace, and in the community. By awarding grants to community-based literacy programs, providing free professional and leadership development for teachers in the field, and granting scholarships to outstanding adult learners to continue their education, first literacy is working to elevate every member of our community.

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | FIRST LITERACY'S APPROACH TO ADDRESSING THE UNDERSERVED POPULATION OF ADULT LEARNERS, BOTH NATIVE- AND FOREIGN- BORN, IS MULTI-FACETED AND EVIDENCE-BASED. WE BELIEVE THAT FUNDING COMMUNITY-BASED PROGRAMS IS A FUNDAMENTAL STEP IN HELPING ADULTS LEARN, PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES, AND BE AGENTS OF CHANGE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES. AFTER 26 YEARS OF SUPPORTING AND ADVANCING THE ADULT EDUCATION FIELD, HOWEVER, WE KNOW THAT FINANCIAL SUPPORT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH. THERE MUST BE A COMPREHENSIVE, HOLISTIC SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS TO ENSURE THEIR OVERALL SUCCESS. IN 2014 FIRST LITERACY SUPPORTED 19 LITERACY PROGRAMS THAT, WITH OUR PROJECT SPECIFIC FUNDING, COLLECTIVELY EDUCATED OVER 1,100 ADULTS. IN ADDITION TO FUNDING CORE CLASSES, SUCH AS PRE-GED AND GED PREPARATION, BASIC LITERACY, AND ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES CLASSES, WE SUPPORTED SERVICES SUCH AS CHILDCARE AND COUNSELING THAT PROMOTE ATTENDANCE, IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION, AND ENABLE STUDENTS TO FIND EMPLOYMENT POST-GRADUATION. GRANT MANAGEMENT IS AN INTEGRAL COMPONENT OF OUR WORK WITH PROGRAMS. DURING SITE VISITS, WE OBSERVE CLASSES, AND MEET WITH ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS, AND LEARNERS. THROUGH THIS APPROACH, WE ARE ABLE TO GET A COMPLETE VIEW OF PROGRAMS' PROJECTS AND OVERALL OPERATIONS FROM MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES. WHETHER IT IS FEEDBACK ON A CLASS OBSERVED, THE SUGGESTION OF TEACHING APPROACHES, OR ADVICE ON EVALUATION, WE PROVIDE SUPPORT TO PROGRAMS SO THEY MAY CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE AND BUILD THEIR OWN CAPACITY. OUR NEW LITERACY LAB, FIRST DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED IN 2014, GOES TO THE HEART OF WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION IN ADULT BASIC EDUCATION: SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS AND OTHERS WITH IDEAS TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE RESOURCES AND PRACTICES FOR THEIR CLASSES AND PROGRAMS, AND DISSEMINATION OF THESE PROMISING RESOURCES AND PRACTICES, IMPACTING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE ABE FIELD. IN 2014, WE SUPPORTED THE DEVELOPMENT, TRIAL, AND SHARING OF EIGHT INNOVATIVE IDEAS ON TOPICS RANGING FROM A COMPUTER-LITERACY CURRICULUM TO A STORY-TELLING PROJECT FOR LOW-LITERACY ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, WITH STORIES RECORDED IN ENGLISH AND STUDENTS' NATIVE LANGUAGES AND READ IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS.FOR THE THIRD YEAR, FIRST LITERACY HOSTED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS. OVER 140 ADULT EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING PROGRAM DIRECTORS, TEACHERS, COUNSELORS, AND COORDINATORS, FROM MORE THAN 90 PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT NEW ENGLAND, ATTENDED OUR WORKSHOPS IN FY 2014. ON AVERAGE, THESE ADULT EDUCATORS SERVE 52 STUDENTS PER YEAR. NOT ONLY ARE WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE PROFESSIONAL LIVES OF ADULT EDUCATORS, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF MORE THAN 7,000 STUDENTS WHO BENEFIT FROM THEIR IMPROVED SKILLS AND EXPANDED RESOURCES.IN JUNE, FIRST LITERACY SELECTED THE RECIPIENTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS WHICH IT GIVES ANNUALLY TO ADULTS CONTINUING THEIR EDUCATION AT LOCAL COLLEGES OR SKILLS TRAINING FACILITIES. WE AWARDED FIRST YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS TO TEN AND CONTINUING SCHOLARSHIPS TO FOUR ADULTS AT AN EVENT HOSTED BY BOSTON'S MAYOR MARTIN WALSH. THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT WE AWARD TO ADULTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED BASIC EDUCATION OR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS AND ARE CONTINUING ON TO HIGHER EDUCATION, AND THE MENTORING THAT IS PROVIDED TO FIRST YEAR SCHOLARS, ARE AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF OUR PROGRAM WORK.
