IRS990/Desc0FIRST LITERACY IS A SMALL BUT EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATION THAT EMPLOYS A MULTI-FACETED APPROACH AND COLLABORATIVE MODEL TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE OF LOW LITERACY AMONG ADULTS LIVING IN GREATER BOSTON. WE NOT ONLY SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS, BUT ALSO ENHANCE THE CAPACITY OF LITERACY EDUCATION PROVIDERS. OUR GOALS ARE TO:- INCREASE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY SERVICES FOR ADULTS WITH LOW-LITERACY OR LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENCY THROUGH CAPACITY-BUILDING SUPPORT TO COMMUNITY-BASED LITERACY PROGRAMS;- INCREASE THE QUALITY OF PROGRAMS THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS AND TEACHERS' CIRCLES FOR ADULT EDUCATORS; AND- ENCOURAGE AND CELEBRATE ADULT LEARNERS' EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS, COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND PERSEVERANCE THROUGH OUR SCHOLARSHIPS AND MENTORING.OUR FIRST LITERACY LAB INITIATIVE, FIRST DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED IN 2014, GOES TO THE HEART OF WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION IN ADULT BASIC EDUCATION: SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS AND OTHER ADULT EDUCATORS WITH IDEAS TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE RESOURCES AND PRACTICES FOR THEIR CLASSES AND PROGRAMS, AND DISSEMINATION OF THESE PROMISING RESOURCES AND PRACTICES, IMPACTING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE ABE FIELD. IN 2016, WE SUPPORTED THE DEVELOPMENT, TRIAL, AND SHARING OF 16 INNOVATIVE IDEAS ON TOPICS RANGING FROM A BOOK CLUB FOR HIGH-LEVEL ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROJECT-BASED, STUDENT-GENERATED SCIENCE, MATH, AND LITERACY CURRICULUM FOR SPANISH SPEAKING HI-SET STUDENTS. THE WORK, WHICH BEGAN IN JULY 2015 AND WAS COMPLETED IN JUNE 2016, WILL BE SHARED WITH THE ADULT EDUCATION COMMUNITY AT AN EVENT ON OCTOBER 28 AT DISTRICT HALL IN THE INNOVATION DISTRICT. THE TOTAL AWARDED FOR FIRST LITERACY LAB GRANTS IN FY 2016 WAS $65,063.FOR THE FIFTH YEAR, FIRST LITERACY HOSTED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE NEW RESOURCES AND METHODS TO THE PARTICIPANTS. THIS YEAR WE ADDED ESOL TEACHERS' NETWORKING CIRCLES TO OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMING. OVER 200 ADULT EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS, INCLUDING PROGRAM DIRECTORS, TEACHERS, COUNSELORS, AND COORDINATORS, FROM MORE THAN 75 PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT MASSACHUSETTS, ATTENDED OUR WORKSHOPS AND CIRCLES IN FY 2016. ON AVERAGE, THESE ADULT EDUCATORS SERVE 20 STUDENTS PER YEAR. NOT ONLY ARE WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE PROFESSIONAL LIVES OF ADULT EDUCATORS, WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF MORE THAN 4,000 STUDENTS WHO BENEFIT FROM THEIR IMPROVED SKILLS AND EXPANDED RESOURCES.WHEN WE WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A DEDICATED SPACE FOR OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS BY TAKING CONTROL OF THE BACK OFFICE (PREVIOUSLY RENTED BY ANOTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION), WE EMBRACED THE CHANCE. AFTER EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS, WE HOSTED OUR FIRST PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP IN THE NEW SPACE IN JANUARY 2016.THE NEW SPACE HAS BEEN USED FOR A VARIETY OF PURPOSES, FROM HOSTING THE WORKSHOPS AND ESOL TEACHERS' CIRCLES TO GATHERING SCHOLARS AND MENTORS TOGETHER FOR NETWORKING SESSIONS.IN JUNE, FIRST LITERACY SELECTED THE RECIPIENTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS WHICH IT GIVES ANNUALLY TO ADULTS CONTINUING THEIR EDUCATION AT LOCAL COLLEGES OR SKILLS TRAINING FACILITIES. WE AWARDED FIRST YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS TO 13 AND CONTINUING SCHOLARSHIPS TO 9 ADULTS AT AN EVENT HOSTED ON AUGUST 16 BY BOSTON'S MAYOR MARTIN WALSH. THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT WE AWARD TO ADULTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED BASIC EDUCATION OR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAMS AND ARE CONTINUING ON TO HIGHER EDUCATION, AND THE MENTORING THAT IS PROVIDED TO FIRST YEAR SCHOLARS, ARE AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF OUR PROGRAM WORK.
