Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Boston Ballet's mission is to bring new levels of excellence to ballet - both on and off stage. We will accomplish this through a process that is inclusive in scope, educational, and creative. Inherent in this mission are several tensions: taking artistic risks while not leaving our audience behind, managing for financial stability while allowing for artistic experimentation, being sensitive to the community while recognizing that ballet is not a mass art form. Meeting the challenges of these tensions has contributed to our success. Through this mission we will significantly advance ballet as an art form, enrich the cultural life of our community, and create a heightened sense of excitement and reward those who join us.

To bring new levels of excellence to ballet - both on and off stage - through a process that is inclusive in scope, educational, and creative.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Boston Ballet's Trusteeship Committee is authorized to nominate new members to the Board of Trustees. Nominated prospects shall be elected by vote of the existing trustees. Each trustee shall have one vote.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

Executive Committee meeting materials are archived and all decisions are reported to the Board of trustees at the subsequent Board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

IRS Form 990 is prepared by the Finance Department under the supervision of the Director of Finance. Once completed, it is reviewed in detail by the Audit Committee. The final draft of IRS Form 990 is distributed to the entire Board Trustees before filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Trustees are provided a copy of Boston Ballet's Conflict of Interest Policy annually. Each Trustee signs a confirmation acknowledging they have reviewed the policy and disclose any such conflicts of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The Ballet has an employment agreement with its artistic director and its executive director effective through June 30, 2019 and June 30, 2021, respectively. Terms of the employment agreements include annual compensation amounts and are reviewed and approved by the Executive Committee. The Ballet analyzes comparable compensation data when determining annual compensation for the artistic director and executive director.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The Ballet's governing documents and conflict of interest policy are available upon request. The Ballet's audited financial statement are available on the organizations website, www.bostonballet.org.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 3A(I)

The Ballet received annual income distributions from the E. Virginia Williams Fund (The "Fund") held in trust and managed by the Boston Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1980's for the exclusive benefit of the Ballet and had a fair market value of $2,100,000 at June 30, 2018

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4 -- The Ballet's Endowment consists of over twenty individual funds established to support artistic productions, scholarships to the Boston Ballet School, and community programmatic activities.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 1

The Ballet is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the "Code") and is generally exempt from federal and state income taxes on related income. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is made in the financial statements. The Ballet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Ballet has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position: however, the Ballet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Ballet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Its federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years after the date of filing the related return.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

Schedule D, Part X, Line 1 -- Deferred tenant improvement allowance is amortized on a straight-line basis over the Newton studio lease term.

IRS990/Desc0Ballet Programs: Led by Artistic Director, Mikko Nissinen, the Boston Ballet maintains a diverse repertoire, ranging from full-length ballets to new works by some of today's finest choreographers. The Company gives over 100 performances at the Boston Opera House and other performing spaces in Boston, MA during its eight month season that ends in May of each year. To sustain the Ballet's artistic excellency, the Ballet has secured $7 million of multi-year pledges that are collectible through fiscal year 2023. Boston Ballet's 2017-2018 season featured 15 ballets including one world premiere, seven company premieres, and seven revivals. The season opened with the North American premier of Wayne McGregor's forcefully resonant Obsidian Tear, a co-production with the Royal Ballet and inspired by renowned Finish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen's orchestral work Nyx. The season also highlighted two historic and influential choreographers, George Balanchine and August Bournonville, with programs dedicated to showcasing their work: Classic Balanchine and La Sylphide. The spring season offered a range of rotating classical and contemporary programming featuring works by: (i) 21st century choreographers Justine Peck, William Forsythe and Jorma Elo; (ii) John Cranko's production of Romeo & Juliet; and (iii) a limited return due to high demand of The Sleeping Beauty. Culminating the season, the Boston Ballet was invited to perform with two world-class orchestra's: The New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center in June 2018 and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in August 2018. Boston Ballet II is the second company of Boston Ballet and represents a two-year program bridging the gap between a dancer's formal training and their professional career. BBII's focus is on developing strong, technical artists who have the skills to thrive in a world-renowned company. BBII performs extensively with the main company at the Boston Opera House in addition to their touring engagements throughout the Greater Boston Community.
