Profile

The heart of Boston Ballet is the human experience. Through our living and breathing art, we forge human connections-between artist and attendee, teacher and trainee, friend and newcomer, one's outer and inner self. Dance history is human history, full of innate beauty, generational memory, and contradictions. We share many characteristics that define our city, as global leaders of innovation with a rich heritage and diverse culture. But Boston's history is not perfect-and neither is the history of ballet. In order to heal as a community, we must unite against inequality, inequity, and exclusivity. We are Boston's Ballet. We believe in the transformative power of dance to inspire positive change in our community and beyond. We step toward the future, where our art breaks down barriers, opens minds, strengthens our connections to each other, and is shared more widely with all. Because the future of dance is the future of humanity.Together, we move-forward and farther-as Boston's Ballet.

Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Boston Ballet's mission is to bring new levels of excellence to ballet - both on and off stage. We will accomplish this through a process that is inclusive in scope, educational, and creative. Inherent in this mission are several tensions: taking artistic risks while not leaving our audience behind, managing for financial stability while allowing for artistic experimentation, being sensitive to the community while recognizing that ballet is not a mass art form. Meeting the challenges of these tensions has contributed to our success. Through this mission we will significantly advance ballet as an art form, enrich the cultural life of our community, and create a heightened sense of excitement and reward those who join us.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

Executive Committee meeting materials are archived and all decisions are reported to the Board of Trustees at the subsequent Board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

IRS Form 990 is prepared by the Finance Department under the supervision of the Chief Financial Officer. Once completed, it is reviewed by the Audit Committee. The final draft of IRS Form 990 is distributed to the entire Board of Trustees before filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Trustees are provided a copy of Boston Ballet's Conflict of Interest Policy annually. Each Trustee signs a confirmation acknowledging they have reviewed the policy and disclosed any such conflicts of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The Ballet has an employment agreement with its Artistic Director effective through June 30, 2032, and with its Executive Director effective through June 30, 2026. Terms of the employment agreements include annual compensation amounts. The Ballet analyzes comparable compensation data when determining annual compensation for the Artistic Director and Executive Director.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The Ballet's governing documents and conflict of interest policy are available upon request. The Ballet's audited financial statements are available on the organization's website: www.bostonballet.org.

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 3A(I)

The Ballet received annual income distributions from the E. Virginia Williams Fund (the "Fund") held in trust and managed by The Boston Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1980s for the exclusive benefit of the Ballet on the condition the Ballet continues to operate as a 501(c)(3) ballet company. The Fund had a fair market value of $2,568,254.96 at June 30, 2025.

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4

The Ballet's Endowment consists of over forty individual funds established to support artistic productions, scholarships to the Boston Ballet School, and community programmatic activities.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

The Ballet is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as an organization described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the "Code") and is generally exempt from federal and state income taxes on related income. Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is made in the financial statements. The Ballet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Ballet has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position; however, the Ballet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Ballet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Its federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years after the date of filing the related return.

IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDesc0The heart of Boston Ballet is the human experience.
