Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Boston Ballet's mission is to bring new levels of excellence to ballet - both on and off stage. We will accomplish this through a process that is inclusive in scope, educational, and creative. Inherent in this mission are several tensions: taking artistic risks while not leaving our audience behind, managing for financial stability while allowing for artistic experimentation, being sensitive to the community while recognizing that ballet is not a mass art form. Meeting the challenges of these tensions has contributed to our success. Through this mission we will significantly advance ballet as an art form, enrich the cultural life of our community, and create a heightened sense of excitement and reward those who join us.

To bring new levels of excellence to ballet - both on and off stage - through a process that is inclusive in scope, educational, and creative.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 4

The Ballet amended its bylaws in FY 2016 permitting the Executive Committee to recommend trustee term extensions for selected trustees who have reached their term limits and are required to have a mandatory gap year as a Trustee. Such recommended extensions are subject to the approval by the full Board of Trustees. Additional amendments to the bylaws included allowing Trustees to serve as an Overseer during a mandatory gap year and other administrative edits clarifying inconsistencies in the bylaws.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

Executive Committee meeting materials are archived and all decisions are reported to the Board of Trustees at the subsequent Board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The Form 990 is prepared by the Finance Department under the direct supervision of the Director of Finance. Once completed, it is reviewed in detail by the Audit Committee. The final draft of the Form 990 is distributed to the entire Board of Trustees before filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization regularly monitors and enforces compliance with the Conflict of Interest Policy through annual renewal of disclosures.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part V, Line 3A(I)

The Ballet received annual income distributions from the E. Virginia Williams Fund ("The Fund") held in trust and managed by The Boston Foundation. The Fund was established in the early 1980's for the exclusive benefit of the Ballet on the condition the Ballet continues to operate as a 501(c)(3) ballet company. The fund had a fair market value of $1,909,000 at June 30, 2016.

Schedule D, Part V, Line 4

The Ballet's Endowment consists of sixteen individual funds established to support artistic productions, scholarships to the Boston Ballet School, and community programmatic activities.

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

The Ballet accounts for the effect of any uncertain tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold to the recognition of the tax positions being sustained based on the technical merits of the position under scrutiny by the applicable taxing authority. If a tax position or positions are deemed to result in uncertainties of those positions, the unrecognized tax benefit is estimated based on a "cumulative probability assessment" that aggregates the estimated tax liability for all uncertain tax positions. The Ballet has identified its tax status as a tax-exempt entity as a tax position; however, the Ballet has determined that such tax position does not result in an uncertainty requiring recognition. The Ballet is not currently under examination by any taxing jurisdiction. Its federal and state income tax returns are generally open for examination for three years after the date of filing the related return.

IRS990/Desc0Ballet Programs: Led by Artistic Director, Mikko Nissinen, Boston Ballet gave 102 performances at the Boston Opera House and other performing spaces in Boston, MA during the eight month season ending in May 2016. The fiscal year 2016 season featured 12 ballets including two world premieres, four company premieres and six revivals. As a result of several new techniques implemented in the 2016 season, such as variable pricing, alternating repertoire and an enhanced social media presence, Boston Ballet had the highest attendance in more than a decade and its best ticket revenues in the company's 53-year history. The season began with the American premiere of "Third Symphony of Gustav Mahler," a ballet by John Neumeier, followed by Mikko Nissinen' s production of The Nutcracker. The season continued with John Cranko's "Onegin," a dramatic story that has become one of this century's most sought-after full length ballets. The spring season featured two repertory programs that included works by George Balanchine, William Forsythe, Leonid Yakobson, Leonide Massine, Jose Martinez, and Norbert Vesak. Boston Ballet also presented two world premieres by Yury Yanowsky - who retired in fiscal 2015 after 22 years as a Boston Ballet dancer - and renowned choreographer Karole Armitage. The spring season also included a return of Mikko Nissinen' s "Swan Lake" after its premiere and record-breaking run in October 2014. Boston Ballet II is the second company of Boston Ballet and represents a two-year program bridging the gap between a dancer's formal training and their professional career. BBII's focus is on developing strong, technical artists who have the skills to thrive in a world-renowned company. BBII performs extensively with the main company at the Boston Opera House in addition to their touring engagements throughout the Greater Boston Community.
