IRS990/Description0PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION: SINCE ITS FORMATION IN 1935, GORE PLACE SOCIETY HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO THE PRESERVATION OF THE GORE ESTATE AND ITS COLLECTIONS. THE MANSION WAS DESIGNED BY REBECCA GORE AND FRENCH ARCHITECT JACQUES-GUILLAUME LEGRAND AFTER CHRISTOPHER GORE HAD COMPLETED DIPLOMATIC DUTY IN ENGLAND. THE 50-ROOM BRICK STRUCTURE IS THE OLDEST SURVIVING POST-REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNOR'S MANSION IN MASSACHUSETTS AND IT IS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF AMERICAN NEOCLASSICAL (FEDERAL) ARCHITECTURE. THERE ARE HIGH CEILINGS, MARBLE FLOORS, OVAL ROOMS, CURVED DOORS AND MOLDINGS, A FULL-SPIRAL CANTILEVERED STAIRCASE AND MANY LARGE, UNUSUAL WINDOWS. THE MANSION IS CAREFULLY FURNISHED FOR INTERPRETATION THROUGH RESEARCH AND BY USING CONSULTANTS SKILLED IN THE STYLE AND TECHNIQUES OF THE EARLY 19TH CENTURY. OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES, PROJECTS TO PRESERVE AND RESTORE THE HOME HAVE ATTRACTED BOTH FEDERAL AND STATE AGENCY AND MAJOR FOUNDATION SUPPORT.IN 2012, THE INITIAL PHASE OF THE RESTORATION OF THE 1793 CARRIAGE HOUSE WAS BEGUN WITH THE COMPLETION OF A NEW WOODEN ROOF. FURTHER PHASES WILL RESTORE WINDOWS, DOORS, REPLACE GUTTERS, REPAINT THE STRUCTURE AND RELOCATE IT 150 FT SOUTH TOWARD ITS ORIGINAL LOCATION. IN 2003, THE SOCIETY BEGAN AN IMPORTANT PROGRAM OF ARCHIVAL,ARCHITECTURAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET HOW THE GORES LIVED ON THE ESTATE. THE RESEARCH CONTINUES AND IS FUNDED THROUGH GRANTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS. FINDINGS ARE USED TO GUIDE INTERPRETIVE PLANNING AND ARE INCORPORATED INTO PROGRAMS. THE RESEARCH REVEALS THAT THE GORES ENJOYED A REFINED LIFE STYLE UNKNOWN ELSEWHERE IN NEW ENGLAND AT THE TIME WITH HOUSEHOLD CONVENIENCES THAT INCLUDED CENTRAL HEATING, A HOT WATER SHOWER AND A LAUNDRY DRYING CLOSET. ARCHITECTS PREDICT THE FINDINGS WILL AFFECT THE STUDY OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY HOUSES IN THE US AND IN EUROPE.A MASTER LANDSCAPE PLAN AND A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE GORE PLACE FARM GUIDE FUTURE RESTORATION OF THE LANDSCAPE. IN 2012, ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH AT THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF THE 1793 CARRIAGE HOUSE AND AN ADJACENT GORE-ERA GREENHOUSE WAS COMPLETED.
