| DAWN IN THE SUMMER OF 2017, SONNET REPERTORY THEATRE, INC. CONTINUED ITS DEVELOPMENT OF DAWN, A MUSICAL PLAY. THE GOAL WAS TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE ORCHESTRATIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS OF THIS UNIQUE FOLK SCORE WITH A MUSICAL DIRECTOR SPECIFICALLY SUITED TO DAWN. THE BAND IS COMPOSED SOLELY OF THE EIGHT-PERSON CAST OF ACTOR-MUSICIANS, WITH MANY ORCHESTRATIONS/ARRANGEMENTS DERIVING FROM THE SKILL SETS OF A PARTICULAR CAST. SETTING ACCURATE GUIDELINES IN THE SCORE TO ASSURE THE MUSIC REPRESENTS THE STORY, WHILE ALSO ALLOWING FOR FUTURE CASTS TO UTILIZE THEIR SPECIFIC SKILLS HAS BEEN A PARTICULAR CHALLENGE TO SHAPING THE SCORE ON THE PAGE. THE NEW BOOK, RESTRUCTURED AND CONDENSED BY 25 PAGES, HAS PROVEN TO BE A STRONG IMPROVEMENT TO THE PIECE AS A WHOLE. HOWEVER, SPECIFIC SCENE WORK HAS BEEN LIMITED BY TIME CONSTRAINTS. THE TIME GRANTED WAS A HUGE ASSET. THIS DEVELOPMENTAL PROCESS CULMINATED IN PERFORMANCES, AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC, AND WAS ATTENDED BY OTHER NOTABLE ARTS ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE WILLIAMSTOWN THEATER FESTIVAL. DAWN IS A STORY OF POWER, IDENTITY, ABUSE, AND SELF-SALVATION UNIQUELY TOLD THROUGH A RICH TAPESTRY OF SOUND AND CHARACTER. AT A TENT REVIVAL IN 1978 KENTUCKY, SHERRIE PEARCE IS MOVED BY THE PREACHINGS OF BROTHER JAMES CHILDRESS. SHE CONVINCES HER HUSBAND JOE TO LEAVE HIS JOB AT THE CHEMICAL PLANT, AND TO MOVE WITH DAUGHTERS DAWN AND JULIE TO AN EVANGELICAL COMMUNITY IN FREDONIA, TEXAS. FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD DAWN TRIES HER BEST TO EMBRACE THIS NEW LIFE IN SPITE OF FINANCIAL AND DOMESTIC HARDSHIPS. MUSIC BECOMES A SOURCE OF BELONGING FOR THE TALENTED SISTERS, AND DAWN QUICKLY FORMS FRIENDSHIPS WITH CLASSMATE CARRY AND YOUTH PASTORS BROTHER SCOTT AND ALMA, WIFE TO BROTHER JAMES. HOWEVER, AFTER PERFORMING HER NEWLY WRITTEN SONG WHAT WOULD JESUS DO, DAWN IS SCORNED BY BROTHER JAMES FOR SUPPOSEDLY DOUBTING THE LORD. SHAKEN AND SEARCHING IN A PRIVATE PRAYER ROOM, DAWN IS APPROACHED BY ALMA WHO OFFERS A PRAYER AND A SURPRISING KISS. THIS NEW ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP PROVIDES DAWN WITH A DEEPENED SENSE OF FAITH AND BELONGING, JUST AS HER PARENTS BEGIN TO DOUBT THEIR OWN. DAWN'S PHYSICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH ALMA ESCALATES AS SHERRIE AND JOE SOLIDIFY THEIR DECISION TO LEAVE FREDONIA, DEALING A DEVASTATING BLOW TO DAWN. ALMA ASSURES HER THE LORD HAS A PLAN AND PRESENTS BROTHER SCOTT WHO PROPOSES MARRIAGE. DAWN ACCEPTS, AND AGAINST HER PARENTS' WISHES REMAINS IN FREDONIA FOR A FORMAL COURTSHIP. SHORTLY AFTER, DAWN IS SURPRISED AT A CHURCH SERVICE WHEN EARLIER THAN PLANNED, HER OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENT IS ANNOUNCED TO THE CONGREGATION. DURING THE PERFORMANCE OF A SONG SHE AND SCOTT WROTE TOGETHER, DOUBT SWELLS WITHIN DAWN, WHO STOPS THE MUSIC AND CONFRONTS BROTHER JAMES. HE CONVINCES HER THESE DOUBTS ARE FROM THE DEVIL, AND THAT THEY MUST EXORCISE HER DEMONS. BUT AS THE EXORCISM INTENSIFIES, CARRY COMES FORWARD, PUBLICLY CONFESSING HER FORMER RELATIONSHIP WITH ALMA AND BEGGING BROTHER JAMES NOT TO REPEAT AN EXORCISM ON ANOTHER GIRL. AS ALMA STEPS BETWEEN AN ENRAGED BROTHER JAMES AND DAWN, HE VIOLENTLY THROWS HER TO THE GROUND. IN A FINAL SCENE, WE SEE DAWN, CARRY, AND SCOTT IN FRONT OF A PACKED CAR AS THEY WONDER WHERE THE ROAD WILL TAKE THEM NEXT. | - | $9,145 |

“Dawn in the summer of 2017, sonnet repertory theatre, inc. In a final scene, we see dawn, carry, and scott in front of a packed car as they wonder where the road will take them next.”
