IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Conservation ScienceThis year, the FSI tree planting crew remediated just over 4 acres of water edge with 6 sites along riverbanks and 6 more along lakeshores in the region. A total of 1,674 trees and shrubs were to be planted through the NorthWoods Buffer Planting Program and another 1,798 disease resistant elms were planted for the Nature Conservancy at the Willoughby Falls Wildlife Management Area in Orleans and the Johnson Farm Wildlife Management Area in Lemington.NorthWoods riparian tree planting survival studies are now in their 5th year of data collection and beginning to reveal trends in tree survival. In 2017 data was collected from 12 planting sites, including our first-year planting sites from 2012. The survival rate of our first set of 5th year sites planted in 2012 was 63.57%, and so far still above our goal of an average survival rate of over 50% in the first 10 years post planting. 2017 marked the first year of NorthWoods Scope & Design Grand funded by an Ecosystem Restoration Grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation. After having LakeWise evaluations performed on their property, lakeside landowners are given the opportunity to mediate existing issues with stormwater runoff through the developments of BMP designs.Demonstration Forestry & Education2017 was another year in the 1480-acre Spitzer demostration Forest. In the second year of our NRCS contract, we treated 0.4 acres of invasive common reed, mitigating this threat to the health of our forest, and also completed about 8 acres of pre-commercial thinning to enhance future resilience and timber value. Our Sustainable Forestry Internship grew from 1 full-time seasonal intern to a crew of 3 interns, and was extended to 14 weeks. These interns worked on forest management projects in the Spitzer Demostration Forest and for other landowers, attended conferences and tours, assisted with forestry consulting and forest management plan preparation, taught high school students to run chainsaws at the Women Can do conference, and helped with countless projects at NorthWoods.Forestry Consulting and low-impact loggingWorking with local landowners and municipalities, NorthWoods staff prepared forest management plans, maps, and/or Current Use applications for 14 landowners. Low impact timber harvesting was conducted for one landowner in West Charleston, Vt. in the winter of 2017. This harvest improved the quality and timber potential of the clients forest, while also providing a learning lab for our Sustainable Forest Interns.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0EducationIn 2017, NorthWoods had over 4,000 students visits. Approximately half of these visits take place on our home campus, where the lesson and medium to get there depends on the season - in Winter, this means snowshoes, cross-country skies, ice-fishing, and endless ways to enjoy the snow. In Spring, when the ice is out, we are some of the first in the north country to get our canoes on the water, to spot the return of the Osprey to the Clyde River wetlands, and to track the daily changes in sights and sounds at the pond and in the woods. In fall, team-building and leadership programming highlight the start of the school year.NorthWoods offered 12 camp weeks in 2017. Seven (7) weeks were offered on our home campus, including Wild Science Discovery Camp, overnight Canoe Camps, and Nature Day Camp. Five (5) weeks were offered at our partner site, at Burke Mountain Resort. Mountain Bike Adventure Camps remain an exciting offering - two weeks are the perfect medium for adventure, challenge, and outdoor engagement for many of us, and with Burke Mountain Bike Park and Kingdom Trails as partners, the experience we offer might not be matched anywhere else! (in gear at least) for a week-long trip down the northern Connecticut or Clyde River, part of our Northern Explorers program, with our partners at the Northern Forest Canoe Trail.Camp is a sandy beach and enroute, campers have learned about river features, technical skills of paddling, and how water quality compares in different sections of the River. Theyve learned about team work, and overcoming obstacles of bad weather and disagreements. All these highlight learning on the go espoused by our Education staff. The River changes you. The bug bites and sun tan will fade, but callused paddling hands stick around a long while, and that feeling (yes, that one!) of accomplishment transfers from the River to the next pursuit-whether its a hike, an impossible math test, or daydreaming for your next expedition.Summer camps remain a lively and vibrant part of the NorthWoods summer. We are happy to continue to grow our partnership with Burke Mountain, enabling us to offer camps utilizing their bike park, and facilities, and situated with greater access to the southern side of the Northeast Kingdom.
