Additional Explanations

Part XI - Reconciliation of Net Assets

It was determined during the preparation of the 2020 annual financial statements that certain assets' useful lives used prior to 2018 to calculate depreciation did not properly reflect the Organization's useful life policy and, therefore, accumulated depreciation for those assets was understated in the prior-year financial statements. In addition, certain receivables and prepaid expenses recorded in 2019 and prior were recorded in error. The combined effect of these restatement adjustments resulted in a reduction to total assets of $1,025,794. Pension-Related Changes , other than net periodic costs of $30,757.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1 - Mission and Significant Activities

2020 was a year of unexpected change and anxiety, but despite this, Easterseals Hawaii was able to quickly recalibrate, pivot and fulfill its mission in new ways that ensured it was able to meet both its team members and client families where they were at any given time. Much of this was driven by its people-first approach, prior investments in technology infrastructure and new clinical modalities that offered greater flexibility in supporting both a remote workforce and remote service delivery environment. Because of this, ESH was able to maintain its 300 plus person staff, without pay reduction, invest in new trainings to equip its practitioners with the skills needed to provide care via telehealth and serve more than 2,000 families delivering nearly 220,000 service hours in 2020. In addition, myBrightlink Virtual Camp and Club were launched to provide children and adult participants in the programs some fun, educational and social connection via a classic summer camp-like experience, at no cost to families. The summer session was a success and has evolved into a year-round program funded exclusively by donated dollars. Easterseals Hawaii is also a member of a family of companies including the Catalight Foundation, the BHPN, Easterseals Northern California and Xolv Technology Solutions. Across the five companies, there are nearly 800 employees working together to responsibly disrupt and transform home and community-based care and help become a diverse, equitable and inclusive organization that works proactively to address complex societal problems such as healthcare access and greater well-being for underrepresented communities.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X - FASB ASC 740 Footnote

The Organization has established its status as exempt from income taxes under IRC Section 501(c)(3) and the laws of the state of Hawaii. Activities of the Organization are not subject to income taxes. The Organization recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not of being sustained, and changes in recognition or measurement are reflected in the period in which the change in judgment occurs. The Organization has evaluated its current tax positions and has concluded that as of December 31, 2020, it does not have any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary.

Part V, Line 4 - Intended Uses Of Endowment Fund

Endowments are designated for the future maintenance and upkeep of the organization's facilities, youth camps on all islands, the Kauai residential, day program, respite and supported employment, the Kauai program and administrative expenses and program and administrative expenses.

IRS990/Desc0Early Intervention (EI): Despite the circumstances of 2020, Easterseals Hawaii's Early Intervention (EI) program, the state's largest provider of EI was able to maintain continuity of care and support for 96% of children and families enrolled in the EI program - serving on average 675 children per month. By quickly pivoting all support to telehealth, ESH was able to ensure children 0-3 years of age could continue to close the developmental gap via individualized treatment plans that address delays in overall development, motor skills and language. Remotely, Early Interventionists helped support families through education and coaching, consultation with schools, childcare agencies and other service providers. Telehealth has seen strong adoption with EI families due to the shelter-in, but it has also proven to deliver positive outcomes with greater flexibility for families. Given this, the outlook for 2021 and beyond is that telehealth will become woven into the fabric of service planning for families in their Individualized Family Service Plans as a new standard of care. In 2020, ESH also completed the state's RFP process to secure funding for the program for an additional three years. ESH looks forward to expanding this important program, as recognizing a delay in children early, being able to offer an assessment and move them quickly into treatment is essential to helping children catch up during critical stages of development.
