IDAs executive committee regularly and consistently monitors and enforces compliance with this policy by reviewing annual statements and taking such other action as are necessary for effective oversight.”

“www. Documentary.org-IDAs website is a vital portal into the industry that provides up-to-date information and opportunities to connect with the documentary film world. During the fiscal year 2014-15 the site was viewed by 441,642 unique visitors and there were 981,033 page views.”

“Pare Lorentz Documentary Fund provides production support for the creation of original independent documentary films that illuminate pressing issues in the United States. In fiscal year 2014-2015 IDA received a grant of 222,000 from the New York Community Trust. IDA awarded grants ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 to five 5 film projects totalling 95,000.”

“Other Program Services - Education Advocacy Expenses 448,702 Revenue263,172 Doc U is the IDAs series of educational seminars, workshops and master classes for aspiring and experienced documentary filmmakers. Taught by industry experts, participants receive vital training and insight on various topics including crowdfunding, storytelling, using sound and music, using graphics, fair use and foundation support. During fiscal year 2014-15, two 2 Doc U events provided educational training to filmakers in Los Angeles and four 4 were held in San Francisco. A total of nine 9 Master Classes were held at the IDA offices in Los Angeles. Also in the fiscal year, entertaining and informative conversations were held with prominent documentary filmakers Nick Broomfield, Brett Morgan and Ondi Timoner.”

“IDA co-hosted Getting Real- Documentary File Conference along with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences September 30-October 2, 2014. Attended by approximately 575 filmakers and other industry professionals, the purpose of the conference was to ignite what is desperately needed in the documentary community a frank public conversation about the state of the industry that will lead to action and change.”

“ID Co-presented a Documentary Preservation Summit in New York March 31-April 1, 2015 along with DOC NYC. The event gathered approximately 180 filmmakers, preservation experts and others to address the risks of important documentary films being lost and strategies for ensuring their future.”

“Advocacy - In July 2014, IDA filed comment on the Net Neutrality issue with the FCC, following up on work started in 2010 on this issue. In February 2015 IDA was happy to see the FCC pass new regulations to protect the free flow of content on the internet.”

“In November, IDA filed petition with the Copyright Office, requesting a second renewal of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act exemption for documentary filmamakers, allowing filmmakers to make full use of their fair-use rights to copyrighted materials locked behind digital encryption. This landmark work was started by IDA in 2010 and IDA continues to advocate on behalf of documentary filmmakers every three years when the exemption expires, expanding new petitions to include new technologies that are critical to documentary filmmsking. In February 2015, additional comments were filed and IDA gave testimony on this case to the United States Copyright Office. In October 2015 the petition was successfully approved including updated uses for Documentary Filmmakers.”

“In October 2014, IDA included education, community discussion and workshop groups about advocacy issues affecting documentary filmmakers at the Getting Real Conference.”

“In November 2014 IDA filed an Amicus brief in the case of Garcia vs. Google, a Ninth Circuit case where the court ordered Google to remove copies of the film Innocence of Muslims from You Tube based on the claim that one of the actors in the film had a copyright interest in her performance. The potential ramifications of this case could have created a dangerously unworkable situation for documentary filmmakers, who often cant obtain express releases from every person in a shot. Together with other arguments made in the case, IDA was relieved to hear in May 2015 that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rescinded their original opinion.”

“In the first half of 2015, IDA also spent time creating a strategic plan for our Advocacy work, including the cultivation of potential supporters and donors specifically for this arena of work.”
