Thrive - cradle to career, santa barbara countywhat does a prosperous community with a rich heritage do when it begins to experience rising poverty rates, an increase in high school drop outs, skilled labor shortages and formidable challenges for local businesses? Research indicates that in many of santa barbara county's low-income communities over 75% of the children do not enter kindergarten ready to learn and succeed. The high school dropout rate has increased dramatically. Recognizing shrinking public funds available for public education as a key driver of these challenges, thrive was established as a collaborative of private funders, large and small, that pooled their resources to help bridge the gap and identify cost-effective solutions. Partnering with the first five commission facilitated coordination with successful early childhood development efforts. Thrive supports five communities, targeting neighborhoods and schools with the highest rates of low-income students in carpinteria, santa barbara's westside, isla vista, guadalupe, and santa maria. Building on existing collaborative efforts, these communities have organized thrive working groups, which include school districts, non-profits, parents, and neighborhood leaders. Through community-based discussions, including evidence-based needs assessment, these groups have identified four shared goals:children enter school ready to learnchildren master grade-level content standards through grade 3children are healthy and thrivingfamilies are actively engaged and serve as a strong support for their children's learning and developmentthrive donor investments follow a line of accountability and pursue measurable results. Through a collective impact model that honors our local tradition of working together, thrive leverages networks of resources and stakeholders to support families an
